This movie is so 90's. The 90's never would have died if it hadn't been for 9/11. Up until that point, the 90's were still going strong. I miss the days when everybody who was considered "cool" was brooding and cynical and anti-establishment.
Regardless of genre, I appreciate music as an art form. But I don't understand all the fuss over this kind of thing, Sleater-Kinney, etc. What I hear mostly could best be described as the "cult of the ego." Heavy on the narcissism and one upsmanship: an affluent white class luxury of not needing to care about actual music the way poorer classes generally need it to "survive." See what I'm getting at? Wearing second hand clothes to be ironic; not because you need them.
@macikatica I don't see quite what you are getting at actually. Perhaps you could elaborate? I think that drawing a line between races/classes and suggesting that one appreciates music in a more pure way than the other is pretty short sighted and simplistic. Could you expand on how you hear narcissism and ego - is it in the lyrics? the production? Are you talking about the music itself or your view of it's audience?
Where'd Mary go? Is she by the tractor? No--no, she's on the tractor! No--wait, she's in the tractor--no, she's by the tractor again! Oh, she's sneaky!
She stole my hairstyle! I always wanted to do a half up in a ponytail with long baings behind my ears half the time and down the rest. I love her outfits too, and her voice, ok, she's like me, just wish I would have been earlier than '92 so I could see all this stuff happening.
@KristinNirvana nah,be happy your young. i guess im happy growing up with this stuff but im 35 now.Im hitting 40 pretty soon, that sucks! Its cool you go back in time and enjoy this type of stuff.
@goodmood3 Yeah, I guess I meant I wish I was the age I am but that it just happens to be the early 90's. I keep hearing the names of more and more bad pop stars and popular musicians of today and it really freaks me out because of how bad/fake/shallow they all sound. I remember when it all started to change around'98 and I hated it and have been hating my generation since, and to think it was real/raw/pure/passionate/poetic like this and the other grunge/alternative poeple right before that!
@KristinNirvana You're right. Right about '98 music went downhill. The White Stripes are the only exception. I'll be 40 next year and I'm ok with it :)
@Triumph72 Yeah, the White Stripes are good, and I also like System Of a Down, and always thought the Foo Fighters were the perfect hard rock band, but beyond that, there's not much. Well except Violent Soho, the new grunge band from Australia, and Cage the Elephant is good too, and more underground bands like Pet Salad, Sick Sick Sister, The Chocolate, Paradox, Pissed Jeans etc., but not many people know about bands like that, and they are hard to find, and there need to be way more.
@KristinNirvana I will check out some of those bands you named. The Greenhornes are really good. They were the ryhthm section for the Raconteurs, another Jack White band. But they are really raw and they sound just like a 60s garage band. Seen them live 3 times. Check out their vids!
@Triumph72 Oh cool, I like that 60s garage rock stuff, I'll check them out. Ha, I was just talking to my mom, who's in her early 40s, and she said she was really scared when Britney Spears, N'sync, and The Backstreet Boys got famous, because it was all like what the heck is this, it was such a weird thing, I was more angry though, I hated that as a little girl I was bombarded by such awful fake shallow garbage, and all my friends were eating it up. Now it's new bad pop stars. You are very lucky.
@Triumph72 Yeah I guess it's bad for the adults of today to have to see the bad music around too. I do hear adults complain about the bad state of music and how they had it much better, so they are being affected by it as well. I guess it would only be good if we all get to be young in an era of good music. But oh well.
@KristinNirvana Well when you reach even your 20s, you always have this feeling that you wish you were younger, because things were more innocent and simpler. But the truth is, the best time to be alive is the here and now, this moment, no matter if you're 5 or 50. This is also the best time to be into music, because it's all there for you to discover. There was no YouTube in the 90s, so finding hidden gems took incredible effort and luck. So, consider yourself the lucky one!
@Triumph72 Yeah, the only good thing is that it's all in the past for me to discover, but apparently MTV used to play music, in which the music would come to you to discover, and my generation has never had that, you HAVE to use the internet, but the internet doesn't have nearly everything, and you HAVE to know what you are looking for and type it in before you start looking, you have to have heard of grunge in order to search it out on the internet, it's SOOOOOO hard, most people don't do it.
@KristinNirvana That is sure true, MTV from about 87-97 was great, especially during the alt/grunge era of 91-95. They played videos, had 120 minutes, Alternative Nation weird commercials like Jimmy the Cab driver (check those out here!) and my favorite show of all-time, Beavis and Butt-Head. But wait, check it out, Beavis and Butt_head is back starting tomorrow! Hehe. Enjoy your search for triumphant music, if you ever need any suggestions, let me know! The Greenhornes for sure, just great
@Triumph72 Thank you. I think I've learned a lot., I mean it's REALLY hard, I'm just glad I don't have much of a life and am able to search it all out, most people wouldn't, everyone I talk to says I know a lot, and there are only a few die hard fans that just have to know everything, I mean you think it would be easy to find stuff out on the internet, but no. I hear stuff about how there used to be local channels with shows that played underground music too, and something called public access.
@KristinNirvana You have a great attitude :). Yes all that stuff existed but most of us found out about cool underground/alt bands through word of mouth and watching MTV. I almost miss the days before the search engine lol. But that is your tool. The fact that you know about Helium is impressive, they were never big. You will succeed in your search for music that soothes your soul, I guarantee it.
@Triumph72 Oh yeah, word of mouth. I would have totally told kids at school about good bands if I didn't feel totally distant from them because I seemed to be the only non emo kid, and the only kid who was saying you SHOULDN"T like what's new and popular just because it is so. You wouldn't hear kids talk about bands other than what was already in the media anyway. I found out about Helium from watching a B+B clip on here, I wish they would have the old episodes on tv, glad they are back though.
@KristinNirvana Even then, during the height of the grunge era, it still wasn't the most popular music. Bad dance music and pop like Janet Jackson was still the most listened to stuff. So those of us that liked underground music always felt like the outcasts. The masses will always like the most mainstream stuff. The Nevermind Nirvana era was just a brief moment in time that didn't really last more than a year or so. In Utero was popular and sold well, but not like Nevermind.
There was plenty of bad music in the 90s too, the 80s was full of it, and horrendous boy bands existed in the 70s, and even in the 60s some of the pop music was unlistenable. When I was in my teens, I always wished I could've been around to see Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and David Bowie and Cream, etc. It always seems like the past was better, but that's not really true.
@KristinNirvana All things must come to an end, sadly. This includes our lovely conversation, since I need to put my old self to sleep lol. But keep in touch :)
@Triumph72 Hey I thought I'd tell you that because of our conversation, I realized that probably a lot of people don't know of the good newer grunge bands that I know of, so I started this facebook page called "Spread the word of good newer grunge bands" and people have posted some good stuff I had never heard of, and seemed to love the stuff I posted too!
@KristinNirvana I just saw your facebook page and liked it, great stuff! Someone posted a Greenhornes vid, sweet! It Returns, that's one of their best tracks.
thank-you Beavis and Butthead, for introducing me to Helium in 1995, when I was a wee little 14 year old. :) Helium opened up the floodgates of underground music for me.
@crashoverride65 Writing complex keyboard/guitar arrangements along with lyrics with reflective poetic imagery and catchy vocal melodies is indeed the number one activity in the trailer park. You haven't listened to much Helium or Mary's solo albums, have you, co?
Kinda reminds me of the Breeders or Liz Phair. Something in the air back in the 90's. Good music.
