@pfc3 Hahahaha. Yeah! Italian and Spanish have this sound, rrrrr, but opera singers tend to use it with other R sounds when singing in Spanish or Italian, sometimes, even in German and English, languages that don't have that sound.
Well, I don't think Plácido didn't know how to pronounce a Chinese R. He just sings as he sings =)

This is a traditional Tibetan song from Sichuan. It has both, Tibetan and Mandarin text. The singer, Sung Zuyin, is wearing a costium of Miao nationality but is Han nationality.
as a matter of fact, in terms of diction, Domigo utilized some of the Chinese techniques; and he also made an effort of "moving forward and upward" as far as the "sound-making organs" were concerned - involving more lipwork
Sad the Communist government is still stopping the average citizen with a 10 year Passport and the ability to travel overseas at will for holidays or just simple seeing how free we are outside the entrapments of the republic of China.
They never having had real personal experssion in China, saddens us in the west,as the Communist regime continues to stop open political expression in 2010.One day the Communist regime will fall in toto.
@dickinsonstarkey First, the problem is her voice, then the problem is that Placido is far too famous to be paired with her, and then now, the problem is the communist government and freedom of expression?
You just sound like a guy suffering from the classic effects of jealousy and/or insecurity. LOL at you saying "it saddens us in the West". Like you really care. If you did, you wouldn't have insulted the woman and her "degree of fame".
I feel sad for those who owe trillions to the CCP lol XD
@dickinsonstarkey Oh and another thing, it's Placido who went to China (more than once). Yeah, that's right, a Westerner performing THERE (a once unthinkable situation, you know, with all the communist things going on...lol).
Now, he sings for them. He goes there, and even sings in a language foreign to him. Why? How?...
I can see how this would strike a nerve inside that shallow head of yours lol.
@Ch1neseDrag0n come on..... not everything in China is about politics or communist things. A lot of Western artists had hosted concert in China, like Celine Dion.Mariah Carrie ect. Mr.Domingo also sang his own song in this concert ok?He's there for art exchange and the friendship between him and Miss Song which built at the closing ceremony of 2008 Olympic Games.Don't be narrow minded.
@meditation23 You know what, I agree with you. And that's basically my whole point. The person I was replying to is the person you should be conveying your comment to, instead of me.
That person was insulting the Chinese singer, and in a general degree, insulting China as a whole. It was almost like he thinks Placido is too good for China. It was condescending.

@dickinsonstarkey Ask WTTC which country contributed most to this year's international tourism. i always wander why a world with full freedom of speech have so many inaccurate impression about China.
@dickinsonstarkey A joke: Nixon complained to Deng Xiao Ping that China was too up tight allowing Chinese travel abroad. Deng replied: I could relax the control. How many do you want? Is hundred million enough?

Ah yes, your are correct ,the Italian school and bel canto. I cannot understand why the two distinctly different individuals and voices were on the same programme. He alone was a star stunner in actual performance, the world over, anywhere any city.
The female is an unknown outside her own country of Communist China.[maybe, perhaps a few ex-pats are aware of her performances]
@dickinsonstarkey, you arked why they're singing together, that is called culture exchange. BTW, Song Zuying might be only known in the Communist China, but last I checked, Chinese population is much much more than the whole European. So I think Song's audience is much larger than Domingo's.
@oldshuren ~ You are so darn right and no need to get upset with ppl who only live in their small world, and not knowing what is outside their little boxes. Their mind is just like a 1" x 1" box. Sigh........
He's no Pavarotti. They definitely should have picked a better tenor. That male has the weakest voice of any tenor I've ever heard.
Outside of the small demographic of opera lovers in Europe and maybe USA, his audience is rather tiny and that's probably why he's trying to get in with the larger audience in China by singing Chinese folk music. She's not singing Italian Opera here.
@dickinsonstarkey This is her concert at the Bird's Nest Olympic Stadium in June 09, and he is a guest together with Lang Lang. It is his honor to be invited as a guests to perform there. You should find out more before you make any comments. Go google the names, be more knowledgable. This song is a very famous chinese traditional folk song, and should be sang in this way. In the olden days, before they have loudspeakers, boys and girls sang vs each others in groups opposite the hills.
@dickinsonstarkey, Check her performances at Austria Vienna Golden Hall (just do a search in Youtube) before commenting that she's not famous outside China. In case you do not know, Vienna Golden Hall is a dream place for all top artistes to perform.
This is a great performance of East and West. A pity that she sounded tired or the process of losing her voice has begun. Nonetheless, she looks very beautiful.
That's a Chinese folk song, and the female sung exactly in the traditional way which this song should be sung, I don't know what the problem is?
I think those people who are criticizing the female are the people who have no idea of Chinese folk song is, they don't the tone, the style, the tempo, they just using their own culture standard to juge the whole universe. That's culture stereotype, don't be so arrogant and criticizing on the things that u dont actually know, cuz thats not brilliant
@cucumartin Not to worry, those people are just Americans. The only music they know is rock, rap and hip-hop. Everything else to them is just noise. I know, I live there [for now]. I can only get music to listen to on YouTube and then only with headphones so as not to offend them. Late at night, I watch CCTV-Русский via streaming internet just to keep from going crazy.
@whitedogsrule yup. American rap, heavy metals, hip hop, etc are noise to me. I haven't bought a CD since 1999. I cut back CD/record purchase since the 1980's. Let them eat craps from lady gaga, snoop dog, fifty cents.

Question: Is Lang Lang getting a bit chunky? I thought it might have been his clothes, but looking at his face, I see some chub.
The piano solo was great. The singing was nothing to be excited about because the sing is just very simple.
And to those criticizing the female soloist, drop your ignorance. This is a Chinese folk song sung using traditional chinese opera technics. If you have issues with the presentation, pitch, style....or whatever not liking your western style, it's your ignorance. It is a different art form.

Domingo has lowered himself from great to all right. The female pitch was awful, like a squealing cat on a roof of some Chinese town.Best not for export as a resume, Domingo ! Forget this stuff.
@oldshuren I agree with his wardrobe. He needed to balance his appearance more with Song who's so decorative. I wish he had dressed up a little more. He looks a little sloppy... or too laid back. That's my opinion.
@oldshuren It was a Tibetan-Chinese song, but the lyrics has always been Chinese. Yes, contrary to Western anti-Chinese propaganda, many Tibetans DID speak Chinese even before 1951.

No, No, No! No real soprano sings with nasal voice! Not world class soprano, any way.
Hey, Placido Domingo may be in China for fun & money, perhaps. At least he was her equal in this concert.
But Lang Lang, a 1st world class pianist, reduced as the accompanists for a hardly world known soprano?! Coma! She sure knows how to promote herself! Was there rumor about her pulling with the government leader?
@AurumDream haha, Songzuying needs to promote herself in China? ? She might unknown to you,but she's the most popular soprano in China. She's a Chinese folk song singer, you might don't appreciate the way she sings, but it doesn't mean she not good. I had to say, although Maestro Domingo is brilliant and respected,he definitely get less fans than she does in China.
Song and Domingo also performed another song "The Flame of Love" in this concert, anyone wants it? That song was first performed in the closing ceremony of Beijing Olympic.
Exelente, placido sin duda con el pasar de los años sigue brillando como el mejor.

Let this no talent Colonel Blimp adopt his air of unassailable cultural superiority.
We who are conversant with both the Bel Canto as well as Chinese vocal techniques and styles will enjoy the artistry in both.
This Colonel Blimp would use Domingo as a club to put down Ms. Soong as "artistically inferior."
Domingo does not share this Colonel Blimp's ugly prejudices. Domingo knows that Ms. Soong is a fellow professional who has earned his respect.

Hard for my Western ears to recognize the merits of the lady with a rooftop fan hat, but what a fantastic pianist!
