what worked as a lubricant from pencils was actually the lead that was mixed in with the graphite. superior lubricant indeed. that is were the pencil graphite earned its reputation. today the pencils no longer contain lead, and the pencil graphite does not work nearly as well, but the "myth" persists because people don't understand the properties involved. the lead made the graphite stay in place and also made it really slippery. if you can find 30+ year old pencils, they still work.
