The girl playing at 18.50 is left handed or not? maybe the camera shot is via a mirror?
I am LH and at my first violin lesson (40 years ago) I picked up the bow in my left hand thinking correctly that the bow arm produces the sound.
You actually play the violin with your bow arm and hold it with the right hand.
Playing lefthanded is more foreign now than playing righthanded was then let alone the construction and restringing of the instrument. I think Paul McCartney plays LH guitar?
Very interesting to see a documentary about this school; I'm starting there in September. Gives me more of idea about the expectations. Thanks very much for uploading.
I feel sorry for the girl who feels like she's been forced etc., the kid with the glasses seemed to speak a lot of sense. It was quite a surprise, considering how good she sounded, that there was talk of her not having a career in music, being nervous on stage etc. I'm lucky to have always had the free will, the downside being I only started at 16, anyway I said some of this in my last comment so I won't waffle! This video really shows the demands of modern professional musicianship, it's scary!
Blimey that teacher is demanding! Wish I was good enough to go there, though I've done all my GCSEs etc. anyway :S hehe. Wish I'd started early like these must kids have done, I only started discovering music properly when I started college, it seems too late to make anything proper out of it :( and my violin teacher obviously thinks so :/
I feel kind of like that too, like i only started violin at 9 and now i am 16 and i would LOVE to be good enough to go there but i am nowhere close. But it is definately not too late for you to make anything proper out of it. You don't need to be professional level to make anything out of it. As long as you enjoy it it doesn't matter.
Hey, thanks for the kind words :) the lucky thing is I've never and will never have the urge to play professionally! I guess it's just the personal goals, and there's so much to playing it right, so much to take in, and now my lessons are only every month or so as well! Haha, don't worry about starting at 9, I'd say that's a great age! 7 years earlier than me, which is a long time, I don't think starting at 6 etc. is essential to being an excellent, excellent player, ay all!
I agree that you don't have to start really early to be an excellent player. I am doing some music theory at the mo and i was wondering how a 6 year old could learn it cos it isn't easy at all... Soon i'm gunna start learning the cello, it is something i really want to do. It doesn 't really bother me that i am starting quite late, although i can't find any books for beginners which aren't really childish! So you were 16 when you started violin?
Hey that all sounds good, the cello's great! Are you not looking for a teacher for it then? I know what you mean about childish books haha, I start playing when I'm 16 and have to chew through tunes called things like 'The Crunchy Cookies' hahaha! Yeah I did begin then, I'm coming up to 19 now, not even half a decade of plating yet! Hehehe
GOOD SCHOOL OF MUSIC ;-) I finished LITHUANIAN music school ;-) I saw the same i see here ;-) Music schools are only in Great Britain, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, And few other countries... :-) Its strange but true.....
I've just been to the Summer school for pianists at Chets, and it was fantastic. Great atmostphere, great pianists playing every night, such as Peter Donohoe, Simon Roscoe, Graham Scott, Murray Mclachlan. And of course great teaching. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the pianos were brilliant. I recommend anyone to go there! Russ.
Izzy Johnston who was in the Classical Crossover Band Wild and Is the Girlfriends of Harry (Mcfly) went to that school so she this might have been the Time she was there as this Show was filmed in 1996 and 1997
The way they celebrated his birthday is just adorable! We music students love our teachers!:)
