  • Ocd sounds better! Seems just a bit more real , fuller.....listened to first comparisin, immediately obvious!

  • Comment removed

  • The better setting is when you dont have pushed no pedal

  • is this a 9v powered? and will an ordinary 9v adapter work on it (for example, boss, digitech type of ones)

  • @iamsdeathgod Yep.

  • To compare the sound of two pedals with only a definition of 240p is ridiculous! The compression makes us miss a big part of the frequency spectrum...

  • sounds like the Cool Cat adds some unnecessary lows when you stomp on it but, as for the drive, they sound identical

  • The Cool Cat sounds clearer to me, but maybe the OCD could sound liek that with a small EQ tweak.

  • @technoguyx *like

  • the OCD sounds compressed.......Dano more open... difference in the high feqz....Dano brighter..... They sound a lot alike... thanks for this demo GearManDude

$25 compared to $160 that's the clearest difference

  • I clearly heard more overtones & and

a more bottom in the OCD

  • sounds like a cheap pedal to me, OCD all the way!

  • Huge difference ...in price!!

  • @kostasssism And probably in building method as well.

  • What is that intro song???

  • @nascarbean Black Crowes "Midnight From the Inside Out". Cheers!

  • im sorry the vid might sound like they compare but im sure they dont...i didnt get passed 4:00 of vid so he might have later on in the vid....but i will bet and maybe im wrong but ill bet the danelectro does not clean up as well as the ocd....thats the main reason i bought it....i dont know why he didnt demo that really...maybe i missed it

  • @ihaveaverybadcold i never understand why some people want a dirt pedal to "clean up". if I want a clean sound, i'll bypass the pedal! dirt pedals are made to distort, not clean up...

  • @naazrael its probably cuz yout playing the same style as me i guess....when a od cleans up its a lot more smoother transistion going from distorted to clean than just turning a pedal off....works really well with slow blues....and you cant get the anywhere near the same tone from a pedal that cleans up vs turning it off when you want it clean

  • @ihaveaverybadcold im sorry i meant your not...its late and im sleepy

  • @ihaveaverybadcold I understand the idea of a low gain drive. What you're telling me is that for a distortion pedal to sound good, it needs to sound good when not distorted. that's stupid. it's like judging a race car based on how slow it can go, when it's built for speed.

Besides, they both use clipping diode designs. Clipping diode pedals really don't clean up that well with a volume knob roll.

  • @naazrael jesus christ dude....im not sayin that at all...if you understand the idea of a low gain drive then we shouldnt even be having this discussion....for heavey distortion...i have a pharaoh fuzz and a big muff.....for distortion i want to clean up i have the fulltone ocd for low gain drive music....a pharaoh would be considered the race car...if you will....and the ocd is more like the cadillac....built to be smoothe...and just because you dont understand doesnt make it stupid

  • @naazrael Thats because you dont know how to use one yet

  • @blackbrooke lolwat

  • @naazrael Cant use a pedal, cant understand basic english, figures.

  • @naazrael because then you have different amounts of gain by rolling down the volume knob. some people like to leave it on, then use the volume knob to clean up a bit for rhythm playing and then have full drive for leads, a fuzz face is a good example of this. cleans up to have a brighter overdrive sound for rhythm and then with the volume on full it gets full on fuzz and thickens up and rolls off the high end.

  • Comment removed

  • @timmy47 Agreed. I was about to say almost the same thing about fuzz faces till I realized you already did.

  • @naazrael I think you're misunderstanding the idea of a pedal "cleaning" up. In my case it's not that I want a clean tone out of the pedal, but rather to go from full distortion to a light low gain drive. In a lot of songs I'll roll back and forth between these tones creating a lot of dynamic without ever having to hit a switch. I run a pretty good sized board and I'm the band's lead vocalist so the less tap dancing I have to do on switches the more I can concentrate on playing and singing.

  • @MakeMusicIA

I primarily use my amp's drive, and it's a single channel amp. i use my volume knob for that, OR, i use a pedal, with my amp's drive low.

Plenty of dynamics to be found. but to judge a dirt pedal on how good it sounds when not dirty is dumb.

as far as tap dancing, it's all dependent on how you set your board up for ease of use. i haven't seen yours, so i don't know what "good sized" means. But just saying.

  • @naazrael What your saying is that is okay to roll back your volume on a single channel amp to get different shades of dirty, but it's not okay when your using a pedal. So, because the rest of the world doesn't approach their setup the same way you do they're dumb?

  • @naazrael unless you want that awesome old-school super responsive tube overdrive sound.

  • @zuzu1022 i don't even know which comment this is in response to

  • @mauriciog1971 how can balls suck?

  • @mauriciog1971 AFI totally sucks bro

  • very informative, they sound very similar.

  • I'm sorry, but you can't beat the OCD.

  • @randomguitarstuff56 the OCD is too dark, IMO. the circuit rolls off way too much high end.

  • @naazrael It's just personal preference, but for the money the Cool Cat is a better deal. I just like the sound of the OCD more.

  • I had the video playing in the background and switched back to it whenever one sounded better than the other, most of the time it was the Coolcat, The cat has less low end which may show more with a Stratocaster or Telecaster and sound too thin. Still with the better build quality and better low end, the Fulltone is not worth the extra money over the Danelecto.

  • itt: trolls trolling trolls

  • @mauriciog1971 dude ive got better things to do then talk to a keyboard warrior like you. YOU HAVE BEEN BLOCKED SUCKA

  • @mauriciog1971 dude if you dont care about what i think then why are you still grinding and grinding on this stupid argument? geez this is fucking ridiculous. i pity you.

  • @mauriciog1971 did i ever say i thought i was funny? and what does his number of subscribers and views have to do with anything? i dont even know why you give a shit about my comment you're the only person making a big deal out of a comment i posted 4 MONTHS AGO!!!. everyone else honesly couldnt care less because they're just here to watch a good review. grow up dickhead.

  • @mauriciog1971 dude dont say im not "loyal" to gmd ok ive been a subscriber for 2 fucking years. and i understand how the jack black joke is old but how many people mention him as sounding like death from family guy or dale from king of the hill. just shut the fuck up before you make yourself look like a dumbass. i dont care what people like you think. you have a subscription to afi the worst punk rock band ever so dont fucking question MY views.

  • @mauriciog1971 dude its a joke. have you ever heard of a joke?. jesus fucking christ get a sense of humor

  • I got the cool cat from a lanlord we played a gig at. He gave it to me free. So happy with it. Its left on throughout our set to grit the clean channel on my amp up. Perfect!

  • If u have to Money go for the OCD it has a more bassy sound and is built better, but cool cats are almost as good , especially for the price/ if ur on a budget , IMO the "cool cat transparent od" is an amazing little guy though , plug a strat in on the nick pup and ur in the land of a cranked fender twin , it's amazing and it's only $50 , it's my fav pedal that I own

  • are you guys fucking idiots? of course the ocd is much better than that cheap cat. the ocd has more quality in everything from buld to sound. i bought one last year and it is top notch

  • I love my ocd.

The Cool Cat sounds good, but the Fulltone has awesome touch sensitivity, makes you want to play it. You have to spend some time with it to get your sounds, but they're in there.

  • OMG ...the cool cat kills the OCD(the most overrated pedal ever)

  • Using one of these after a BB Preamp. They sound fantastic together. The Cool Cat is not QUITE as warm or fat as an OCD, but it still sounds similar and is a great pedal on its own, esp. for the price (if you can still find a deal on one). Found mine last month in a podunk music store for $31!!!

  • OCD has fuller, richer sound. Cool Cat is a pretty good clone, but it lacks the depth. It's too thin.

  • @jftroopers I have owned a v2 OCD and v1 Danelectro Drive and compared them - they sounded *identical*

  • okay yeah but the OCD is a 1:1-1 clone of the old voodoo labs OD, so the VL is more reliable and better built and the OCD is an okay substitute for poor people. wait, no the voodoo labs is really close to the MXR distortion+ from the '70's, so clearly THAT is the best buy, and the voodoo labs is a serviceable copy if you just use it at home at low volume. of course this means the OCD will melt in direct sunlight and therefore the danelectro will spontaneously ignite during shipping. REASONING!

  • Comment removed

  • @corganb Actually , it's metal. I own one

  • The Cool Cat sounds a little more thin and I think where you would most notice it's flaws is within a studio, but live... it would be super hard to tell the diff.

  • Not gonna lie, I can hear quite a difference. The Dano has some nasty fizzy top end.

  • lol the fuckin sustain with both on at the same time

  • I was originally thinking of saving up for an OCD, and then I was wondering whether it was worth it...then there's this...but then I'm thinking of building a clone of it, so that could work too! GAAAHHHH!!! So many options!!!

  • he sounds like

    1.jack black

2.dale gribble (king of the hill)

    3.death (from family guy)

  • @ottozing death is norm macdonald, no?

  • @ottozing Which Death from Family Guy? Adam Carolla or Norm McDonald? :)

  • I prefer the cool cat personally

  • OMG ITS JACK BLACK!

  • fuck :O, it's a veeeeery little difference, but just for 20 bucks, i'm gonna but it

  • Way closer than I would have expected, and much closer than the v1 Transparent Overdrive which supposedly sounded like a Timmy.

  • danelectro...welcome to the family!

  • Stephen Ridinger (owner and President of the Evets Corporation, which has owned the Danelectro name since the 1990s) donated at least $10,000 in support of Proposition 8.

  • The thing I love about the dano(which I own) is all the massive amount of head room. I mean it really cuts! And it has a bit more gain than the ocd from my experience. Greater volume output/gain doesn't always mean a superior product, but to me with this pedal it is fantastic!

  • A real kickass instructive comparision!!!!!!

    Great dude!!!

I like both pedals---and your playin too!

  • I don't know, they didn't sound identical at all to me... the OCD sounded a lot warmer, and the danelectro a lot, say... cheaper. that's just my humble opinion.

  • I've used the Danelectro for two years, multiple gigs in front of very large audiences.

I always get good compliments on the tone.

Even when my band recorded a studio EP the engineer said my tone was awesome.

    For $25ish, not too shabby.

  • @Xevamir These unfortunately are no longer "$25ish". You can only find them on Ebay (all the retailers are out of them). I just bought a new one and paid $50 + shipping and that was on the lower end of what they've been going for. Am I a Koolaid drinker? Perhaps. But $50 vs $135 for the OCD is still an excellent deal. Can't wait til it gets here. I wanna jam!!!

  • @modalmood Well, I did buy mine a couple of years ago.. lol.

    Inflation!

  • @Xevamir: Werd. Now I'm gassing for a CTO-1 (the Timmy clone) and those are $100(!!!) on Ebay! I could get a real Timmy for $129 including shipping (though I'd have to wait six months for it!)

  • @modalmood I always wanted a Timmy, but I couldn't stand the wait!

I just purchased a DMB pedals Americana, it should be getting in soon.

I can't wait to test that puppy out, complete hand-wired drivey goodness!

  • Comment removed

  • @CR1621 its made of metal...

  • ocd is fuller sounding with a more growl but it is suprisingly close

  • wow it's pretty close

  • Don't look at the video... just listen and see if you can figure out which is which. If you can't, just get the coolcat, and stop pretending like you "hear" tone.

  • 1:18 COK PUSH UPS!

  • hmm. they sound about the same to me. id get the danelectro. :)

  • ocd is slightly smoother and fatter, the danelectro is brighter sounding (based on what i hear here)

  • I must say, I actually hear the dano pedal holding tight and keeping clarity as the heat is turned up, and I am NOT a guy who likes to use pedals to get overdrive, but just about every overdrive or "distortion" (dano "distortion" pedals are usually just overdrive circuits with more gain) I have tried from them sounds good to me. I have a little radio pa amp from the 80's that sits on a 2x8 by my bed for messing around, and I use a dano fab od for it. Not "tube-like" but a good song-writing tool.

  • I've used Dano pedals in the past and really...got nothing bad to say about em. Only thing is I wish the casings were metal instead of plastic, obviously if you're not careful you gonna smash the pedal housing, but they are great deals.

  • @Draugoth actually, I believe the "Cool Cat" line feature metal casings.

  • @Draugoth all cool cat line pedals are housed in a metal housing :)

  • @Draugoth and true bypass :)

  • Nice boots.

  • I like how he is completely stunned at the end. It's hard to admit that a pedal under $30 sounds almost identical to a boutique pedal that you have 4 versions of. He's got a bit of investment in the OCD. I love his demos, though.

  • if i couldnt see the video i would have thought he was doing a shoot out between the same pedal

  • I think I prefer the Dano...

  • The OCD is much warmer, rounder. I think the Dano sounds a bit harsh with the highs

  • To me, personally the OCD does sound a little fatter and I prefer the sound but I must say, not by much.

Danelectro makes great pedals for the price, I dont know how they do it.

  • If this was a blind taste test. Most people would not be able to tell a difference.

  • I like the OCD more because i think it has better definition when you are playing lower notes, and when you play with a lighter touch.

  • Cool cat has more Treble and less Mids

  • what version coolcat?

  • @Iamsadsadsad cool cat drive v1 :)

  • i like the cool cat! yeah!

  • The thing is.. all these overdrives don't usally sound EXACTLY the same with all knobs at 12 o clock, sometimes subtle differences but they have tone and drive and level knobs for a reason. So you can make them sound like each other quite easily. This point can be taken even further if you have an EQ in your FX loop.

  • if they dont sound the same, the Cool Cat sounds better lol

  • It's ridiculous, they sound the same. Why do we obsess so much about this stuff, search for these videos and compared the billion different OD pedals which essentially sound the same. Give or take a true bypass or a knob or two.

  • i mean yes... i can hear a subtle difference, but is that difference worth paying $100 more for? Fuck no.

  • @skulchin What this video doesn't say is that the OCD is an extremely versatile overdrive, with two modes, tons of boost if you want to kick a tube amp, and heavenly overtones. This video lacks bass and high frequencies: that's where the OCD has its trademark. I have the V4, I've purchased it after YEARS trying almost every pedal around. The Cool Cat isn't bad (at least it doesn't fuzz, unlike other cheapo ODs) but if you can't tell the difference between the two ON YOUR AMP, then change amp.

  • @skulchin I'd say the you could compensate for the difference with your amp's EQ

  • @skulchin

Is it worth supporting American R&D, American jobs, and our American economy? And is it worth the Fulltone replacement guarantee, which even without knowing either company's return policy I already know is better than Behringer's? That's up to the consumers.

  • @skulchin there are way more than subtle differences. A lot doesn't translate on YouTubes super compressed audio signal.

Not only is the coolcat harsher but it lacks the smooth and non muddy low end of the ocd. The ocd is smoother and fuller and in a studio or live setting and on different amps (escpecially less expensive ones) the differences would be striking. A Dr.Z would make a tone deaf monkey sound like an angel.

  • @dustinmbox and thats why he owns a dr.z

  • @skulchin Eh, you can build an OCD for less than I'd pay for the Danelectro. In fact I think I will.

  • Wow, the danelectro actually sounds really good. Surprised the hell out of me. The original ones seem hard to come by now though. The only thing is I think the case looks crap, prefer the small boxy OCD and MXR type pedals. I think I'm gonna forego the street cred I will have for owning an OCD and get the cool cat instead.

  • I love how you threw your pick on the pedal board after holding the last note with both pedals on. Lol. Cracked me up for whatever reason.

  • Uhh. these don't sound that close to me?? you guys must be listening on bad headphones or something? The OCD eats the Dano for lunch and then some... I'd say the Dano sounds like a 2d version of the OCD.. it's flat sounding and much less harmonic than the OCD. It literally sounds less touch sensative to my ears?! First demo I've watched of the OCD that made me actually think it sounded absolutely GREAT.

Gearmandude.. it ain't in your head.

  • i think the coolcat has a little more fuzz

  • 4:10 Commence cascading deliciousness!

  • @xxNailFirexx

    @NoseHeros

Yes they're true bypass. They're cheap because they're mass produced in the far east by a company that can afford to make a sall profit on each one.

The only reason they're not more common is snobbery ("My £150 pedal must sound better than your £40 one because it cost more")

  • I hate to say it these sound identical.... Danelectro wins....

  • This has actually helped me make up my mind - I'm going shopping for a Cool Cat Drive. Thanks! Great shoes by the way.

  • Comment removed

  • Actually I take that back. The OCD sounds a little more complex, and has just as much bite. The CC is a lot closer to the OCD than the Timmy, though!

  • cool cat won't last at all its better just to buy a ocd because they will last years and years a cool cat will last maybe 6 months before you break it

  • @djdarkmonkey not true i have had the same 2 danelectro chorus and cool cat drive for 1 year and 4 months and they still work just as great as the day i got them

  • sound pretty similar to me, and if you just don't like the look of the Dano, just use the money you saved to have it rehoused by Dan of This1sMyne effects. Google search him, he does amazing work!

  • WOW! its amazing dano vs ocd; winer? DRAW!!!

  • They sound very close.

OCD sounds a bit richer/fuller but nothing that can't be sorted with compression or eq.

Dano is certainly good value, much like their guitars which are great value.

    Thx for vid, good comparison.

  • I've got the OCD

i want the cool-cat it sounded better i thought

    and it looks pretty solid

  • I love the Danos....

  • I love this video

  • but does the cool cat cause noise with more distortion or effects?

  • The cool cat od circuit is the same as Fab Overdrive?

  • Dano sounded very plastic to me, not original or organic..its bright, yes but its not full and whole unlike the OCD, its rich and very complete, doesn't sound like it has leftovers all over the place in the sound...

  • @philotze ok but if your playing a gig with and your using either one of these pedals do you think people in the audience would be able to tell the difference? .......exactly

  • @philotze I don't own either, but if you ask me the ocd doesn't sound 100 dollars better. Obviously the build is better, but a metal box shouldn't raise the price much either.

  • denalectro pwns the OCD and it costs much less. ROCK ON DANELECTRO!

  • Danelectro makes some really cool pedals, especially for the price. However the Fulltone is a great pedal too, and if you have the money, it is worth the price. The Danelectro seems to pop and snap more while the OCD is deeper and darker. Like I said, some people can afford to buy the Fulltone. Is it a better pedal? Depends on your skill level. Just because someone owns an expensive pedal does not make them a superior player. If you can't play worth a damn, neither of these pedals can save you.

  • @JRindee "Depends on your skill level" I think it depends more on taste and budget.

  • Tonal difference is minute and at the price the Dano is a no brainer.

  • The OCD sounds just a bit more middy to me. Can't call it better. I'd go with the Dano.

  • danoelectro sounds more trebly and bright.

  • howd you do the cool low end sound at about 2:30? cool vid!

  • as the video posting progress's so does GMD's playing....

  • mayby the ocd gives a little more sustain ?

  • the danelectro seems to be somewhat lacking in tone options and in the mid to low end of harmonics. the fulltone has a way bigger range adn much more options, and it is much more true to the way your setup sounds without any drive and such. OCD is the shit!

  • * like noways bitch * ocd all the fukn way!!!

  • COOL CAT DRIVE - sounds a little bit brighter, the pick attack is also a little bit brighter.

OCD V4 - sounds a little bit quieter and darker, you can hear the subtle overtones in this pedal

*like always, it depends on what other gear you're using, how all of your gear complements/works against each other, what sound you're looking for, how it feels, and what you're willing to pay.

  • They sound the same to me....I like these head to head reviews, thanks.

  • The Dano sounds a little thinner, while the Fulltone has more 'balls". It's subtle.

  • You're right the ocd does sound better. To my ears it's more organic and natural. Not saying the coolcat's bad (actually might be better because of the price) but the ocd is definetly the winner here. Your ears aren't biased.

  • I need one, not the V2 i need it lol.

Anyone know if ebay, amazon, or anywhere has the v1?

  • i have the v1

  • @woodenships78 for sale?

  • depends. what's your offer?

  • they sound pretty much the same :) but it's always nice when your girlfriend gets you a $170 dirt box..... best pedal on my board

  • This is amazing! To any human, these pedals sound identical! It's important to remember when you're a musician how small a percentage of your listeners really know what they're listening to when they hear a song. In the real world, miniscule sonic differences count for nothing, especially in a live environment. It's all about practice and passion, and less about spending 90% of your time investigating top of the range gear. And posting long-ass comments on youtube about wasting time :/ ... fuck.

  • @zepredator I like you.no homo

  • Nice demo ... now another variable ... is this the Danelectro COOL CAT drive CO-1 or the CO-2?

  • @danceofthedruids In other words ..could you do a CO-2 to OCD comparison? Thanks!

  • 3:02 good god.

  • I thought your user name was "Germandude" until just now XD

  • My son's played a cool cat through a Mesa for about eight years now, holding up great. And whata sound!

  • @blueterrace

This effects pedal has not been around for that long.

  • Had both and sold the cool cat. Great pedal, but far from the same; the OCD is also far more usable when used on a really clean channel. What I did hate on the cool cat was the location of the knobs and the in/out jack right next to it.

  • DUDE ARE YOU JACK BLACK?

  • As long as you don't literally stomp on them, chuck them out of hotel windows, or have them run over by cars, any stompbox will hold it's own in terms of build.

Treat it well and it'll treat you well.

Also, these dano pedals are pretty damn good quality- sound-wise and construction-wise- especially considering the price.

I could buy two or three of these for the price of that OCD.

  • OCD sounds fatter imo.

  • intro song? sounds badass

  • One other thought, build quality. How tuff do they really have to be. I take care of my investments. I have a pedaltrain board and I don't throw around my equipment. I also don't let anyone else touch my setup. I'm sure the Dano, at least in a metal case
