Yep, 15 died while 33 survived. I think because this ship was "lost" and was stumbled upon, it was never recognized as a war grave until it was too late. Today the sub is virtually filled with sediment and any remnants are well buried.
I'm sick of people going "oh it's so disrespectful to go inside it" people IT WAS SUNK ON AMERICAN GROUND! Right off the Atlantic Coast I might add! Why not go inside of it? There is no German War national cemetary here or any restrictions saying you can't! If this was Pearl Harbor than no it would be illegal because PH is a national memorial to the United States. This U-boat however is fair game for exploration
@freeharddrive The sub is pretty much filled up with silt and sand. While I suppose it is possible to enter the small space remaining in the conning tower, there is nothing more to see other than what you can see outside the sub with a light.
I agree thats it is historical to dive Into uboot and that is awesome to do it and see it from outside.
I find it nice to see uboot dive videos at youtube.
But just look at the U534 Which had Salvaged , there was still beautiful and nice historic objects came out from the boat, that boat is now restored. they would have to do with each submarine.
just every diver that has ever gone out on an Olympus Dive boat for the last twenty some odd years. That wreck is the reason I had to stop diving with them because I wanted to see other wrecks, and every time we left the dock there was one NY or NJ diver who's life goal was to see the "piece of history" and the 24 other divers vote didn't matter. So I have particularly negative feelings about the 100+ dives logged there!
sort of like why everyone would love to see the wreck of The Titanic it's a piece of history that quiet a few people died on and went down with it (and people please don't flame me about comparing a
U-boat wreck to The Titanic)
One big reason for all the interest is probably 'Das Boot'.
Fate u-352 Sunk 9 May, 1942 in the North Atlantic south-west of Cape Hatteras, USA, in position 34.21N, 76.35W, by depth charges from the US Coast Guard cutter USS Icarus. 15 dead and 33 survivors.
Was wondering if people died in this sub,... don´t would be some kind of sanctuary?

why are people so facinated with this wreck? if you have seen it once...
ubetcha13 4 years ago
Maybe because relatively few people have ever seen a sunken U-boat?

The 5" hole through the conning tower didn't help either.

How deep was this dive?
mixerd0822 2 years ago
As I recall the bottom was 115 ft.
kellyrus408 2 years ago
Probably a 5" Naval gun shell went through the Conning Tower. It's possible eh'
