because the challenges to their faith offered by atheists are frightening to them. If they accept the atheist premise then that means they have lived their whole lives based on a lie. This usually makes them very frightened. If they eliminate atheists they think this threat goes away. But the real threat is their own doubts. So even if they atheists from reality the threat is still there.

I personally don't have a problem with atheists, because I feel its ok for others to believe in something, it just pisses me off when others have to go and say that, "That is wrong" or when I want to debate with some atheists, their scapegoat is that I'm an idiot for believing in that, and that its a waste of their time.
