Allemaal mensen die het hebben over ABN, maar ik vraag me af of dat nog wel bestaat. Iedereen pikt wel iets op van het regionale dialect, al doe je dat vaak wel zonder het te merken. Eigenlijk praat alleen de koningin nog maar ABN (het zou wel heel grappig zijn als ze de troonrede gaf in bijv. Amsterdams, Tilburgs of Haags).

Frysk is terecht een taal en geen dialect. Veel klanken en woorden zijn zodanig anders dat het niet dicht genoeg bij het Nederlands zit.
Ik moet echter wel zeggen dat ik (als midden-brabander, nabij Tilburg) het allemaal wel zonder moeite kon volgen.
Ik vind het dan ook wel weer speciaal dat ik klanken heb gehoord die ik uit mijn regio (en het vlaams trouwens ook) ken (bijv: /tied/ ipv /tijd/), terwijl het helemaal aan de andere kant van Nederland ligt.

Wat een prachtige taal is het Frysk toch (ben niet van Friesche afkomst). Eerlijk gezegd denk ik dat in vergelijking met andere talen en dialecten binnen Nederland de Fryske taal vloeinder klinkt. Don't be fooled guys; what these guys are speaking has nothing to do with Old Frisian, the language that fascinates us all because of it's sisterhood with English. The current-day spoken Frisian is nothing but a somewhat Frisian-style pronounced Dutch without it's own vocab or grammar. I can speak the Dutch tongue, never learned the Frisian, but I understand every word of it without ANY difficulty. A Dutch dialect, not a language.
@easterlinear That's just not true ;) Frisian is a constitutionally recognized minority language. To be recognized as such, Frisian has to be a seperate language, which means that it must have it's own grammar and vocabulary (otherwise we'd be calling it a Dutch dialect, and it would not have been constitutionally recognized). Frisian does have it's own grammar and as a native Frisian I can think of dozens of words that are very different from their Dutch counterparts (and more like English :p)
Very interesting to listen too. I would like to say that there was some mutual intelligibility, but I couldn't follow a word of it, but the tone of the language sounded closer to English than Dutch does. I'm sure with one's eyes shut and if exposed to it for a few days, it would start to make more sense. To me, it sounded like a cross between Dutch and Danish (I can't detect much German in it though).
@grifferDK How so? I thought the Danish Vikings focused on the English and nowhere else (with later exceptions to the disputed founding of Normandy in Happy White Flag country and in-house fighting with the two countries past Malmo.
@LinkSOB Perhaps LinkSOB read s.th. about North Frisian. North Friesland is a Frisian colony at the Danish-German border region. Our landscape belonged to DK until 1864 and is situated very close to the viking capitals of Haithabu and Ribe. So we have a very strong Old-Norsk and Jutish influence in our grammar and vocabulary. Most Englishmen think we are speaking Danish, the Germans think we´re speaking a mixture of English and Danish and the Jutish people are even able to communicate with us.
I thought so too. The general sound and the way everyone in the video speaks sounds very close to English. We talked about this in my anthropology class. Fresian and English are virtually identical (they don't look identcal though...obviously), and if you wanted to read a book in Fresian you could easily stumble through. My proff. read a sentence in Fresian and we could make it out clearly. It was pretty interesting lol

I think that it is quite difficult for an outsider to judge on that. You even compare Dutch with German. Wich are two total different languages lad. I'm Flemish and the only thing I notice here is that they just change vowels in most of the words. And they use a lot of Danish words I don't understand....
By the way....you should hear flemish...it's spoken very softly and is quite close to English ;)
To an english speaker, such as myself, this sounds like a mix between dutch and german. As far as language similarity goes, it seems somewhat close to Old English, however Old English is much heavier. This is langauge is very crisp and sharp like english, dutch and german.
I as an Native English speaker could make out about 25% of the words in this video.

Ben verre van Fries, maar ik vind het een goede actie dat ze zo actief bezig zijn met het behouden van zo'n mooie, unieke taal binnen Nederland. Tis toch een mooi stukje cultuur.

ik kom van overijsel bij de grens van twente (in het midden van overijsel) Wij praten ook plat , maar dat is wel anders, sommige woorden zijn wel hetzelfde met fries, maar ook wel anders. Fries is meer een taal en sallands en twents zijn dialecten.

Fries is een mengelmoes van Engels, Deens en Nederlands. Ik denk dat je het oprecht een taal mag noemen en geen dialect. Je kan het (redelijk) verstaan maar dat is ook alles! :P

She's speaking a dialect in the Dutch Language. It's called Frysk. She's born in Friesland and there they speak that dialect. So she's a native speaker of that language.

Wat een prachtige taal is het Frysk toch (ben niet van Friesche afkomst). Eerlijk gezegd denk ik dat in vergelijking met andere talen en dialecten binnen Nederland de Fryske taal vloeinder klinkt. Ik woon nu lang genoeg in het buitenland om enkel alleen naar de Nederlandse of Friesche “klanken” te luisteren zonder te focussen op de inhoud van de tekst. – Mijn conclussie: Het Frysk komt een stuk vriendelijker en zoals eerder gezegd, vloeiender over dan het Nederlands.

Het jammere is, dat het Fries van vandaag de dag niet meer dan een dialect van het Nederlands is met hier en daar een ietwat onbekend woord. 99% versta ik echter gewoon, terwijl ik nooit een woord Fries geleerd heb.
Fries zou weer echt een eigen taal moeten worden, met een hele eigen woordenschat.

Fries is een taal. Dat het meer en meer vernederlandst is jammer.
Maar ik ben sinds kort in het bezit van een Fries woordenboek en ik sta versteld.
Het is echt een compleet andere taal.

The other day I had my radio on and put it very low, I forgot I had it on. So I thought I was hearing German, and was thinking were the hell is that coming from, I then found out it was actually English.
Theme of the story is English sounds like German when not paying hard attention to it. I tried it with this and it sounds very much like English.

Don't be fooled guys; what these guys are speaking has nothing to do with Old Frisian, the language that fascinates us all because of it's sisterhood with English. The current-day spoken Frisian is nothing but a somewhat Frisian-style pronounced Dutch without it's own vocab or grammar. I can speak the Dutch tongue, never learned the Frisian, but I understand every word of it without ANY difficulty. A Dutch dialect, not a language.

@easterlinear That's just not true ;) Frisian is a constitutionally recognized minority language. To be recognized as such, Frisian has to be a seperate language, which means that it must have it's own grammar and vocabulary (otherwise we'd be calling it a Dutch dialect, and it would not have been constitutionally recognized). Frisian does have it's own grammar and as a native Frisian I can think of dozens of words that are very different from their Dutch counterparts (and more like English :p)

Very interesting to listen too. I would like to say that there was some mutual intelligibility, but I couldn't follow a word of it, but the tone of the language sounded closer to English than Dutch does. I'm sure with one's eyes shut and if exposed to it for a few days, it would start to make more sense. To me, it sounded like a cross between Dutch and Danish (I can't detect much German in it though).
By the way, she's beautiful!

Yeah. They say that the Frisians can read Old English almost word per word. That's how close it is.

@henrytheeigthiam - Sorry but nowhere near any danish in it. "Normal" dutch have many things in common with danish, but didn't get any of it here...

@grifferDK How so? I thought the Danish Vikings focused on the English and nowhere else (with later exceptions to the disputed founding of Normandy in Happy White Flag country and in-house fighting with the two countries past Malmo.

@LinkSOB Perhaps LinkSOB read s.th. about North Frisian. North Friesland is a Frisian colony at the Danish-German border region. Our landscape belonged to DK until 1864 and is situated very close to the viking capitals of Haithabu and Ribe. So we have a very strong Old-Norsk and Jutish influence in our grammar and vocabulary. Most Englishmen think we are speaking Danish, the Germans think we´re speaking a mixture of English and Danish and the Jutish people are even able to communicate with us.

I thought so too. The general sound and the way everyone in the video speaks sounds very close to English. We talked about this in my anthropology class. Fresian and English are virtually identical (they don't look identcal though...obviously), and if you wanted to read a book in Fresian you could easily stumble through. My proff. read a sentence in Fresian and we could make it out clearly. It was pretty interesting lol

@suprairc I know Frisian the closest to English as a language, but how do certain people feel that Danish rubs off (apparently a lot as it had to English in words in the least) here?
Not challenging that it does, I'm just wondering since Denmark's pretty much isolated aways on top of the German border.

I think that it is quite difficult for an outsider to judge on that. You even compare Dutch with German. Wich are two total different languages lad. I'm Flemish and the only thing I notice here is that they just change vowels in most of the words. And they use a lot of Danish words I don't understand....
By the way....you should hear flemish...it's spoken very softly and is quite close to English ;)

To an english speaker, such as myself, this sounds like a mix between dutch and german. As far as language similarity goes, it seems somewhat close to Old English, however Old English is much heavier. This is langauge is very crisp and sharp like english, dutch and german.
I as an Native English speaker could make out about 25% of the words in this video.

To an english speaker this sounds like a mix between dutch and german.
I as an English speaker, can make out 20 -30% of the words she is saying.. having no knowledge myself of Frisian
