How to install .rpm packages in Ubuntu (The Easy Way)

What if gdebi won't install the program automatically? gdebi should install it if I double-click it but it just opens up the files.

@Termix444 Does your prompt look like "username@computername:~$" ? If not, then type cd ~ first, then cd Desktop.

@Arjun007ize RPMs are not executables, they are instllers. After you install, there should be an entry in your little menu, or if not, try typing the program's name into the command line.

hi homestar92  I followed you step by step how to convert to deb RMP, so I tried to convert yahoo messenger Red Hat RMP on deb for ubuntu , everything was ok:)

I installed, but does not allow to open de ymessenger,why ?plz help my,red hat its a free linux or not ? end nice video sorry for my english im romanian:)

i just want to ask you what Ubuntu version are you on and does this work for 8.10

Well, I recorded this on 8.10, so yes. I'm on 9.04 and it still works. For the most part, programs will run on any distro, so I'd wager a guess that as long as you can install alien, this will work for you.

Yes, I believe so. I think the command is "sudo alien -r debname.deb" to convert from deb to rpm but I'd have to check.

cool, cause i got yellow dog linux on my PS3 and i can't do jack with the packages they give you. so i'm thinking if i can grab some packages for ubuntu on PPC i should be good
