  • FInALLY SOMEONE WITH THE SAME MODEM AS ME GOSH.....but sadly it still didnt work ..maybe im just stupid imma ask my sis to do this 4 me...

  • hahahaha "for older people (old farts) and people who don't know how to do stuffs" haha

  • @RealSouljaYuye If you live in a hotspot you don't need to hook your ps3 up to anything. Just go to network settings, choose wireless, and let it scan for a wireles access point. It will show you a list of what's in your area and the percentage of how strong your connection is. Some are password protected and some may not be. If you see one that is Not, just press connect, and you are online. :) When I travel, I take my ps3 so that I can play it at hotels!.. Have fun.

  • what happens after that

  • do i need to call timewarner for it 2 work?

  • @kgeorge66 if timewarner is your Internet service provider you may have to call them to activate service. generally speaking as long as your service is paid for and you have everything hooked up correctly it should give you the option to access your wireless network within a few minutes.

  • @considerately Does wireless routers work with Satellite internet modems?

  • Do you Have To "switch" off your modem or could i just unplug it?

  • @ThePortadump I am unsure what this question is in regard to. Unplugging your modem or router is fine. Every time that my wireless internet stops working one of the first things I do is unplug the modem/router for about ten seconds in an attempt to reboot the internet.

  • Can I have a cable to mycket computer from the wireless router and get better speed?

  • Can I haven

  • Thank you for this!!!!! Buying a laptop next week and had no idea what equipment I needed. I finally understand that my desktop can be hardwired and the laptop and other devices will run off the router.

  • wow

  • @RealSouljaYuye Part 2: If you do not have any internet in your home then you will need both a cable modem (or DSL/satellite) internet and a wireless router in order to play your ps3 in a different room. Otherwise you'll probably have to directly connect to your internet via a wire of some kind and you'll have to have your ps3 close to your internet connection. In any case, in order to use your ps3 internet wirelessly you will need a modem and wireless router.

  • @RealSouljaYuye In order to get internet access on your PS3 or your PC/Laptop you require the same things. The cable modem is the device that brings the internet into your home. The wireless router is the device that transmits the internet to your pc/ps3 wirelessly. I'm pretty sure that all PS3 have's a wireless internet adapter. If you already have wireless internet hooked up in your household then all you have to do is connect to the same network through your ps3.

  • Thank you so very much for explaining the desktop PC part. I was having a lot of trouble figuring that out! I almost brought the router back and forgot about the whole thing! THANKYOU!

  • can people steal my wirless internet

  • @Liljoeescamilla After you hook up your wireless internet you will also have to set it up on your computer. When you do this it will give you the option to password protect your internet. Adding a password will make it more secure. If you do not add a password then people may be able to use your internet.

  • @Liljoeescamilla YES, HOWEVER YOU CAN PASSWORD PROTECT YOUR ROUTER BROADCAST SIGNAL

  • IMPORTANT: You also want to position your wireless router at least a few feet AWAY from your sitting position while at your PC. A wireless router, much like a cell phone, transmits RF energy in the UHF radio frequency range, which can be hazardous to your health. RF energy, over time, can cause cell mutation and cancer. The router uses a higher output than your notebook or netbook PC, by the way.

  • slow

  • can you connect a ethernet cable to the back of the router to xbox 360 to connect to xbox live

  • @ko2music I haven't tried that method out as I have a newer xbox model with the built in wireless however, I looked it up and it appears that what you said should work.

  • @ko2music ya you can hook it up if you have a wirlees and have 4lan prts put he ethan net calbe in and there

  • @ko2music its the most simple way of connecting to live, so yes

  • When you get older you will realize how little you knew when you were young!!

  • It's the big one! Perfect for old people who don't know how to do stuff!!!! TRUE! My Mom. Fantastic

  • wow ido know

  • pretty useful, now im going to buy one, thanks

  • your so creative! ha ha!!! what a way to do tell people how to do all this with a little sarcasm!!

  • LOL IM 22

  • Well done , ThanksI could even understand . Well done kids ! :)

  • Very Detailed. Thanks

  • for older people and people who dont know how to do stuff??? HAHAHA I guess we shouldnt have gotten born...you r lucky its so easy for you.

  • @robinleigh131 I'm glad that you could appreciate the humor. Please know that we weren't trying to be too mean.

  • Just purchased my 1st laptop & followed directions to hook up the router & I have WIFI but it says LAN isnt connected. Can you tell me what I need to change (i dont see how there is anything to change)I am 54 and new to all of this technology so I really appreciate both of you taking your time to help someone like me. I also dont know how to go about securing my wireless account.Thank you so very much.

  • great presentation ...very clear for everyone

  • @isengdong thanks!

  • I dont get it i waz using my computer with the same modem and router netgear... Wen all the power shut down...thx alot thunder... Wen i turned it bak on nothing work... The modem light wen of n on the wifi didnt work i tryed all i can but nothing help....!!!!! :(

  • I Have The Same Router And Modem :D

  • this video was sooo helpful i have the same modem as you and i just brought a belkin router after two days of dealing with the belkin techs over the phone i felt like giving up. after watching this i knew what i had to do its so simple i wont ever forget. thanx :D

  • @roseavechica I'm glad we could help.

  • So, i have a weird question; I have comcast internet being set up tomorrow, ( im sure they send the modem) but i told them ill get my own router. what router would be best for Comcast internet? would any router work? and if so , which is better?

  • @Halfbreedzero Any wireless router should work as long as it is newish. If you are uncertain you might want to go online to review sites like cnet.com and do you own research. Most often the best buy is a compromise between quality and price. I personally own one from Linksys and one from D-Link and they both work great. Any major brand is a good buy usually just make sure to get a receipt on the off chance it is a dud. Good luck.

  • you can work this on your wii right but i really like the fat routers better than the slim so i would not recomend this router for the Wii

  • With this older router, do you have to install a specific program to your computer for it to run?

  • @LoganZone101 If your router is less than 3 years old probably not. If your operating system is really old (Windows XP or older) then perhaps but I can't know for sure because I don't what router/computer you are using. It is a safe bet that you generally do not need a program though.

  • What's the point of using a wireless router in that situation? One would think you'd say how to hook up the router properly to power and the modem, and then have your computer access the router via wireless connection. :/

    Thanks anyway, though...

  • wait so the pc dnt need 1 pluged in o-O?

  • thx u

  • hi search internet support for kabel modem.

    ken your help for video

  • hi search internet support for kabel modem.

    ken your help for video

  • the Ethernet cable needs to lose some pounds than xD

  • You show all WIRED connections (i.e. from cable modem to wireless router to one home main PC), BUT you do not show how to secure your wireless connection (so no one else can access the signal), and how to use remote notebook computers to access the wireless network. You leave much to guessing.

  • @AudiophileTubes This video is/was intended to help beginning users grasp the basic understanding/theory behind merely "hooking up a wireless router" The other steps you mentioned would have to be covered in two or three additional videos. The entire process cannot be explained in one video. This singular video however makes no false promises about the entire internet process, it just explains one component and in my opinion does it well.

  • Aww yea And to do you have to have cable too

  • Can you Hook up the ehernet cord to the modem to the computer instead of hooking it up to the wireless router?

  • @SuperTave The Internet won't work on the Router, you have to buy another Ethernet Cord, which is around 5 American Dollars+

  • @SuperTave yes i just connected my modem to the computer

  • You calling me old? LOL :)

  • after setting up the wireless router, is there any software that must be downloaded onto the computer? im curious because my modem is currently broken and im using one from a garage sale, & we dont know the administrative password, so downloading anything is prohibited. i want to buy a router for a number of things i own, my wii, my nintendo dsi, & my ipod touch & i dont know when my regular modem will be fixed. so is there a way to get wifi working in my house if i just buy a wireless router?

  • why is this the first time seeing a wireless router with a cable blug

  • @considerately: Yep, "peripheral" is much easier than always having to say "the thing you want to hookup to the network" every time, and it was perfect for your audience. Actually, I was hard pressed to find another simple word to describe the concept without saying specifically PC, xbox, etc.

  • @considerately: understood! I know how it can be working with technically challenged family members, but now you're a youtube hit! :D everybody's watching!

Just giving some hints, since I'm an old time computer professional, and I like keeping an eye on you whippersnappers! ;)

Actually, I mostly want to praise you, since I was looking for a video to help a friend that had no clue, and your video was extremely helpful. I was just nit picking.

  • @nnjjoe50 I appreciate the advice. It can be difficult to explain the conceptual side of things so I try to keep it simple, but I definitely want to be accurate now that other people are watching. :)

  • @considerately do u have to hook it up to a computer or can u just connect the router to the modem

  • @arniebarb123 you just have to hook it up to the modem. you can hardwire it to a computer in addition if it is nearby but it is by no means necessary. all you need is the the modem and wireless router.

  • @whoyeahitsme53: as you probably discovered, they are the same. Manufacturers are probably referring to all the network stuff as "internet" because that's how most people will know it. If both wires have the same type plugs on the ends, they're probably the same kind of wire. "Ethernet" is the original technical name. Even the port where you plug in the wire may say "internet", because that's what most people are going to use it for.

  • @XxXx: no need to apologize, just my experience that some people are that technically challenged.

  • Ohkay so can we use an internet cord and an ethernet cord? Because I dont habe 2 ethernet cords. I only have one ethernet cord witch is hooked up to my modem and my computer. But I have a yellow internet cord that came with my router...

  • @XxXxDVKxXxX amazingly, some people don't. if they're too simple for you, there's probably a more technical video somewhere.

  • @nnjjoe50 Wow really? Haha well i guess i owe you an apology.

  • again pretty good, but also (and i'm not asking for advice, but offering for your video), the ports on the back of the router are not for "peripherals" (like printers, external drives, etc.) but for other network devices, like PCs, and just picking a nit, where's the wireless? you showed hooking everything with wires. instead you should have showed a pc connected wirelessly. so, be careful of saying peripherals, since you're really using the wrong jargon, and show the wireless.

  • @nnjjoe50 Again, this video was made for specific family members that are comfortable with the terms we used. They weren't setting up networks and only needed very basic info on the first steps related to hardware setup. I'm comfortable with the terminology we used for those purposes.

  • very good, but the best way to tell the difference between router and modem is that the cable wire can only go into the modem!

  • i have a wired/wireless router and its wired to my computer and when i use wireless for my ps3 it messes up my connection is there anyway i could hook up another wireless router and just use that?

  • Does it matter what internet cord u use?

  • i did this but then no longer had internet conncetion to my pc when turning the 2 modems back on ? had to abort wirless set up,

  • I hope i get xbox live thx for the vid man

  • nice bong. 0:37

  • @jackeduplittleelf They are actually little flower vases from IKEA, but thanks for the relevant comment. ;-)

  • thanks you solution mi problem. :}

  • @Cyth767 same thing

  • please answer this... when we buy a router, usually it comes with a cd right, and do we need to install the cd before we can connect other computers to this (same) internet?

  • @houaly143 It's a good practice to install any software that comes with your new devices. However, if you are asking if you need to install the software on each computer that will be connected wirelessly to your router then the answer is not unless you are specifically asked to do so in the paperwork that accompanies the device.

  • thanks

  • @MsBmx25 Hope it helped!

  • My router is far to my xbox 360 and my wire is to short.

  • @Themarshmallow20 Your router signal may not be strong enough to reach your Xbox.. in which case you can buy a signal booster for your router or just get a new device that has a longer reach. If the wire that came with either of your devices is too short then you can purchase a new longer one at a lot of stores for very little money.

  • like when i hook it up i can use the router on multiple computers?

  • @Blawbloo110 Precisely.

  • the modem light on my wireless router is still blinking red after i did the steps

  • @yusrafication The blinking lights should not be used as a barometer for whether or not your internet is working properly. As long as you get a signal you are good.

  • hahaha!

"...older people and people who don't know how to do stuff..."

    too funny!

  • hahaha!

"...older people and people who don't know how to do stuff..."

    too funny!

  • this is very helpful! let's hope it works :P

  • i need help hooking it up to my ps3 can u help me or make a video please it would help alot :D

  • @hefjbg Just as soon as we get one, we'll be all over it! ;-)

  • I wish there were more videos like this for old idiots like me! :)

  • @Cyth767 I'd advise you to go through the entire setup process once more and make sure to double check each step, if you still can't access the Internet then definitely talk to tech support for your wireless router and have them troubleshoot with you.

  • You just inspired my Grandfather to make a video....he's going to call it....."How to survive a World War, for Young People who dont know how to do stuff"

  • @velveetaslingshot

We fully support your grandfather in his endeavor and will be the first ones to watch.

  • will I have to re set up my internent

  • @dragonfanatic7 I'm not sure what you mean by re set up, but the answer is most likely "no"

  • @dragonfanatic7

I mean call the internet company and make a new account, otherwise you can't do anything on it.

  • here is my problem. im just a little confused right now. i just bought a new ps3 and i want to set up online. so i already have a modem in my house on this computer, which is a desktop computer, not a laptop. do i need to buy another modem to hook up my router directly into it, or can the router pick up the signal from the modem i already have in this computer? i know i need a wireless router, but do i need another modem to hook it up to my ps3?

  • ok my problem is i have a moterolla modem and a netgear router i hooked them up right BUT it won't work....Should I wast another $100 for a moterolla router ?

  • @TheEliteSolder No, call tech support for your Motorola modem and try to troubleshoot with them. If all else fails look at listings on Craigslist in your area for a decent used modem, it should not cost you $100 (for a new or used DSL or Cable modem).

  • I KNEW IT!. i just forgot how to >_> you forgot you needed. to press down on the button beside the modem and let it sit there for 5 to 20 minutes. then press it again when the time is up and you got it :D

  • @deadshotxxx I'm not sure what you "button" you mean, but yes powering down and restarting both modem and router is a good idea before trying to access the Internet.

  • Where is the laptop setup?

  • funny how comcast charges $150 if you want them to do this for you. did I say funny? I meant it's a straight up SCAM on the part of COMCAST ISP to charge older & computer illiterate ppl $150 to do this! it's sad & alarming companies can be so evil.

  • You guys are really good....present...demonstrate as you explain and re-teach...re-teach.... THANK-YOU!!

  • hey, uhhm, if you can respond to this ASAP, do so cause I'm starting to get angry... Can you do this for a laptop? And do you have to plug in the cable to the laptop? I'm dumb when it comes to stuff like this =)

  • You can use wireless for any type of computer as long as it has a wireless adapter already built in (or attached). Most newer laptops come with them so you should be cool. You do not have to plug the cable into the laptop as long as you can get the wireless Internet to work correctly; however, you can do so and it will work just as well as if it were a PC.

  • ok, but I can't seem to get my adapter working.. =/

  • @considerately ok.. well I am having to steal an wireless internet atm but, I did it like that even before i saw your video but I am ot going to hook up my computer in living room and I have a wireless adaptor on my desktop and I avoid having to conect this to my desktop directly??

  • cool i have the same type modem

  • what type of wireless router is that
