See, all of you people acknowledge the problem yet still think dogs like Pugs are viable.
All of the freak toy dogs are wrong. Unless you've got some decent structure. It ain't right. Its still the same distorted view of "beauty" over health. Just a teensy bit milder.
If most breed standards would put emphasis on the health first, the dogs may/may not be better off. If I had the resources, I'd run dog shows where the health/love of dog is top priority. AKC doesn't recognize silver Labs? Baloney. Just because a dogs doesn't adhere to a standard doesn't make it any less of an authentic member of a said breed. All breeds have changed over time when adapting to new environments.
This is why I rescue from shelters! You can bring home an animal 10 times healthier and 100 times less expensive, yet just as loving and loyal and intelligent as that purebred genetic disaster.
You would think that people who learn that the dog breed they are about to buy is genetically compromised would change the breed of dog to something healthier.
Those breeders ought to wake up. That is good solid evidence that breeding is a problem. The same characteristics that help a pug win in shows, also contribute to serious genetic health problems. It is not an improvement, it is a worseng. I am glad somebody is standing up for dog rights.
@TourmalineOpal What about pedigree that has good health? I'm just saying that dog breeding isn't necessarily bad, it's just when it becomes about looks rather than healthy, happy, capable animals.
i'm so glad i've never had to deal with any of those breeders!
here in the US, breeders tend to be much more up front about health troubles of their breeds, will talk to you about them, and always want to know about any illness or injuries that the dogs experience, later in life.
when our cocker died of kidney failure, we told his breeder, right away. turns out he haf a brother who died the same way; she contacted the owners of the rest of the siblings, offered us an apology, and a free puppy
thats so sad :( I can't imagine what those poor doggies and their owners go through. And this is the proof that a pedigree don't tell anything about health.
I have a dog too, and he is very healthy and need at least three hours of walking, running and playing ever day. I also often hear people say that he is cute.
I don't know his parents. Noone does, he was a stray dog once and noone can even tell wich breeds might be crossed in. But he only sees the vet. vor vaccination.
The breeders have literally bred the poor Pug's nose into his skull. How would you like your nose smashed into your head? Could you breathe with that? I didn't think so. Cruel and inhumane. This isn't a "breed standard" it's a human created standard.
Cavaliers were developed from such a small gene pool to begin with, no wonder they are plagued with issues.
I started watching these vids after my husband and I got into a debate over animal husbandry and domestication. What a damn shame that we manufacture breeds for aesthetic pleasure while overlooking the individual (or breed's) needs that correspond with that. I hope that we as a species eventually develop the wherewithal to move on from what I'm sure history will look back upon as part of a shameful past. Truly shameful. Eugenics - ugh.
My parents first sheltie was an awesome dog, but she died after three years due to heart failure when she was getting her teeth cleaned. We knew that it was a genetic flaw because my mom's sister had a sheltie that was a sister to our sheltie who also died from a heart failure at four years of age.
We have rehomed a two year old Pug, Boris, who had the fainting/collapsing problem and very laboured breathing all the time, all really distressing both to him and us. Two weeks ago Boris had an operation to remove some nasal cartilage, shorten his soft palate, and remove the 'curtains' near his vocal cords. He is now fully recovered and the improvement is unbelievable! He hasn't collapsed yet during two walks a day, his breathing has improved dramatically, and he is much happier in himself.
My pug is also the son of a crufts champion and has had problems with fainting/collapsing and sometimes its hard to get him to start breathing.. Maybe pedigrees arent all that healthy afterall...
-
Im so sad to hear that :( but yes most pedigree dogs are damaged, i love dogs and also pedigree dogs but they mostly have health issues genetic deseases and much more, the Breeders have damaged the breeds by inbreeding for to long without using new genes/blood. just to reach the SHOW DOG
The picture of the old version of the pug is really striking. That looks like it was a healthy dog!
Thank God this hasn't happened to cats. Some cat breeds can't breathe properly, like the Persians (because like bulldogs and pugs, their faces are too squashed), but for the most part cats are okay.
The reason why this happens is becouse you buy pure breed dogs if you stop paying the breeders for cruel pratice it will cease simple. If you want a puppy that looks great and probably has a beatiful nature go to the animal shelter on boxing day already vacinated and chipped no cost for you. FUKING BRITISH really is your island that small you have to imbreed everything including your head of state.
I just recently got a cavalier and its been years since i last had one. My last cavie had crngamyphiela and suffered for 3 years (we had him put on pain killers but he was still suffering) before being put down. So this time i demaned to see health history of the parents before purchasing a new puppy. This one is healthy and is crnygampila free. I agree though if nothing is done we may lose the cavie for good
pugs are so inbred they cannot physically reproduce on their own; they have to be artificially inseminated...we've actually reached a point in our genetic mix and match where we've reduced an entire breed to one generation away from extinction...
We have a Glenn of Imaal terrier that does not really conform to breed standards, but I wouldn't trade her for any 'perfect' dog. I believe the breeders association for Glens in Holland is a bit more ethical than for example these pug breeders. They have very strict rules about testing the dogs for several diseases and genetic deficits, and inbreeding. I don't think we should just throw dog breeds out all together, but priorities should definitely shift to the dog's health ALWAYS comes first.
My pug is also the son of a crufts champion and has had problems with fainting/collapsing and sometimes its hard to get him to start breathing.. Maybe pedigrees arent all that healthy afterall...
Anyone who ever fell in love with a dog understands how these wonderful angels contribute to our lives. The fact that man uses them like a thing to make money with is sickening. I feel your pain... I understand how much it hurts seeing your K9 kid suffer just because breeders didn't care to breed for health first and foremost.
@Wtflolyay so sorry about your pug,the pug above in the film is mine,i also owned another pug who died age 4 of a massive fit,he never had any health problems that were visable,we think it was pde or gme that caused the fit.he also used to faint/pass out,the vet said it was to do with the fact that pugs faces are soo squashed and that it was the soft palate doing it,it was very scary, hope your pug is ok,
I love my MUTTS! I have a Choc. Lad mixed with something, and a Lab /German Short Haired Pointer mix. Best dogs inthe WORLD! look great and super smart! No genetic issues that I have seen
england has such unhealthy dogs like the english bulldog compared to american that is usual much healthier and the english staff short and chuncky unlike the lean pitbull terrier that is much healthier
What irritates me most in this is the famous rhodisean ridgeback's ridge across their back. This feature doesn't help in anything, in fact,it makes these breed suffer from dermoid sinus, a life-threatning disease. 1\20 ridgebacks don't have ridge, and these don't suffer from this, and many people want to breed the ridge out of the dog - but no, it's very beautiful so let's euthnaise the healthy dogs and breed the sick ones. Humans are the vainest creatures on earth.

How did the pugs shrink? Surely they should of stopped when they started to get smaller.

In fairness I do agree that alot of the breeding has gone to far and they should start back breeding (like bulldog, pug etc)
Im lucky with my pedigree pet as their a healthy breed naturally (not saying their 100% mind)
But I disagree with son/daughter etc breeding.
