I would like to have an oldies station that focuses on hit songs from the mid 50s to the early 70s and for the stations to play at least 10,000 songs randomly instead of just 500 or so songs
This seems to be a K-Tel re-recording. There was a closer to the 45 version and better stereo recording of "Sweet Mary" on an old Ampex compilation tape of various artists called "Million Sellers." I just like that version better than this one and the 45 version. Most people like the mono 45 version that fades out as it was what was played on radio. The version I mention is a slightly different version because it is in true stereo and has a 'cold" ending and not fade out.
@jswehmeyer69 Idk what happened to them, I dont believe he kept in contact with the guys. He became the drummer a little after this song was released. Im pretty sure they were all meth heads. Hes 63 now.

This song is a real time warp for me. Great song, great memories of the music from the mid 60's to very early 70's. After that music turned to crap for the most part.
Two different versions of this single were released: one in which the song fades out and the other in which it fully ends. The latter is a lot harder to find -- but learly the best. And that's what you hear here! This hit peaked at #7 in January 1971 over a 14 week chart run as Sussex 209.
HAHA! First time I ever heard this song was from a tinny AM radio mounted to the right fender of a John Deere 4010 tractor. I actually idled the tractor's engine down so I could hear the music!
The romantic in me likes to think that this clip is a mini-DaVinci code set of clues showing the actualy Wadsworth Mansion, then and now, scenes from around the band's stomping grounds in Rhode Island and that the final shot could be the namesake, Sweet Mary, in all her, uh, natural glory.
@shmoooopy1972 Brilliant and then some! I heard it driving home from work today, and have listened to this clip on Youtube over and over and over and,...
Beyond cool that you are related to people in the band. Did you ever ask em about this song?
Also, tell me how we went from this...to the Jonas Brothers in 40 short years!
When it comes to '70s songs with a cowbell in them, this song would still surpass the number of cowbell hits of all of those songs grouped together. Once it gets to "Hop a freight," well, look out! Still, a great song.
For all you oldies seekers, Jefferson High School in Lafayette, IN, plays ALL oldies ALL the time, no talking, no commercials -- find it on the internet at JEFF92 dot ORG -- they play GOBS of one-hit wonders!
I remember when i was in 7th grade and the first time i heard this song i was wow what an interesting tune --with the cow bell and all. 1970 is when i remember it coming out. Very good to hear it again. Thanks for posting
@lrd9999 - Radio stations today have a bias against songs that aren't 'familiar' enough! It's really sad that most stations today have a playlist of only about 500 songs; a travesty! There's NO excuse for nay station to have a playlist of less than 1,000 titles, and that's still pathetic IMNSHO!
@thespeez XM channels 6 and 7 (60s and 70s) have been pretty good about that up to now. Unfortunately, 6 has been half taken over by an old-time DJ from NY named Cousin Brucie. He talks endlessly and when he gets around to playing a record it's not always from the 60s (he played the Village People the other day). They should give him his own channel and return the 60s channel to its original mission. Channel 7 is still pretty good.
I remember one day in like 1970 they played this song like 5 times in a row. It was so popular. I remember the b-side to this 45 record, it was "What's on tonight?"
THE BAND NAME ON MY 45 IS SPELLED WRONG TOO....

Unfortunately, most of the oldies stations skip the one hit wonders and songs that didn't make it into the top 10.
