maybe im missing something, but in the first 5 seconds of the video, I see conley has a glint hawk in play but only a colorless land, what happened there?
@theraiderrobert Not really either, some players do it just because its habit, not really nervous, just gives them something to do to take pressure off them
@GenzaiDandy the fact that conley made a mistake putting his land into play tapped when it shouldn't have. If you're going to be in the pros you can't make a mistake like that...he should've lost... because of that mistake.
Last match Wescoe v Woods, Wescoe Should have played Timely instead of Geist Hunter. The hero of bladehold was 3/4 compared to Geist of st traft 4/4. He would have either forced a chump block or got his damage through anyways and had 3 3/3s a turn earlier.
Luis could have played the skirge putting him at 1 then used that to block the birds then played tempered next turn with the mana he would have drawn... might have made a difference
FUCK TEMPERED STEEL.I PLAYED CUNEO UW CONTROL AND 8 WRATH EFFECTS BACKED UP BY 2 BURIED RUIN AND 2 SNAPCASTER MAGE BOTH TO REUSE WRATHS BUTTRAPED IT.Tempered Steel was dead at about after the 4th out of 12 wrath effect
only thing i don't get is why didn't wescoe play moorland haunt the turn he play timely he coulda moorland haunted the fiend hunter giving him a 3/3 flyer
can someone explain to me why wescoe didn't mana leak the dispatch, he would have been swinging in with 4 tokens, bladehold, mirran crusader all pumped with battle cry and honor of the pure....that is 21 damage, that means the conely would have died.
I remember being excited to watch these games. Now it's all the same Titans, and Tempered Steel crap, they go to 4 different games but they all look the same. Such a shame with how much diversity this game leaves for itself its becoming this repetitive.
@AvKriftan I play a Geist Aggro deck similar to Wescoe, and Temp Steel is just too damn powerful most of the time. I've stared down a turn 2 Temp Steel (with a mox opal and a land drop) and been down to 10 life on turn 2. (two memnites and a signal pest turn 1)
Tempered Steel is still legit. Its the fastest deck in standard.
Obviously I know that Conley thought it came in untapped since he didn't use the mana. In the swiss there's no way that Wescoe loses the appeal but they have some weird rulings in PT top 8s like in PT LA where Billy Moreno wasn't allowed to mana burn after making the same mistake twice and also didn't get a game loss after activating a Cephalid Coliseum without threshold
As much as I dislike Craig Wescoe he was right about appealing. The fact that Conley put the land into play tapped and then moved through his attack step would give Wescoe a good case that Conley tapped the land for mana. Technically the land should be untapped but you often see players put lands into play tapped when they're using them for mana which is kind of what Conley did. If they had noticed it before he attacked it would be fine but after that I think it should remained tapped.
At the 28 minute mark, the game is being played & the camera is on Wescoe's face. Wotc still is clueless how to use cameras & it's been how many years now?
I really do not like Rich Hagon's commentary. He uses too much strange made-up slang and shorthand which is confusing. When he says things like, "Attack, in, in! Conley says 'three'," it is really bothersome. Why can't he just say, "Wescoe attacks with his two creatures, bringing Conley down to 3?"
It seems like Craig was getting rattled by the way Woods was playing... He said after the first game he should've appealed Woods incorrectly playing his land tapped and he stops him two or three times during games two and three when Conley goes to draw a card before Wescoe has officially passed the turn. Wonder how much of that had something to do with him losing. Side note: Craig Wescoe is old school. And a VERY good magic player.
Appeal what? Conley accidentally put a land into play tapped when it wasn't supposed to and a judge had him untap it. Are you saying that Wescoe should have made him keep the land tapped? Not only would that be ridiculous, but it'd be cheating if he knew the land didn't come into play tapped but didn't say anything to gain an advantage.
@BF7286 It all had to do with him losing, appealing in that situation is just unsportsmanlike rules lawyering to an extreme and has nothing to do with playing the game fairly, which is what appeals should be about. When you're playing for thousands of dollars and the potential to be World Champion, though, some will do anything no matter how unsportsmanlike.
game 2 craig has a hand of removal, should def just hit memnite and take out what is obvioulsy either nothing or etched champs in conleys hand. if he hits memnite game 2 he blows him out
@LaskaHunter7 Those markings are used to make sure no one cheats during big tournament drafting like Grand Prix's, Pro Tours Etc. They don't lower the value of the cards and they are used to make sure they don't use any outside assistance to their decks.
@rsr2 ah, got it. I play some tournament magic but not at the GP or PTQ level. It just stuck me as odd to have makings on the cards that were for sure not sideboard cards in game 1.
@sarroth Why shouldn't it annoy you? I personally can think of no reason to do that except to confuse your opponent by obfuscating important information and making combat more irritating for them.
@sarroth pre 6th edition starter packs had a paper sheet to use as a game mat and your lands were on top of your other permanents next to your deck, many players learn it that way.
I can't stand the British guy, he speaks in nothing but little cute phrases and doesn't seem to really understand the game at a level enough to comment on this.
@supergeorge3333 Yup. Hagon pisses me off to no end. It's funny, when Randy Beuhler retired from doing the commentary, they replaced him with someone even worse. Randy wasn't great, but he at least had a fundamental understanding of magic, and questioned odd plays that the pros would make. Hagon automatically assumes that because a pro makes a play, it is therefore instantly correct. He does the play-by-play decently, but there's no color commentary.
