160 is the combined speed of the vehicles. Hitting a bike travelling at 80 when you are traveling at 80 also, is like hitting a wall at 160.

The impact is around the same as what the odometer reads. There are some examples where two cars crash into one another at 50mph and are compared to one crashing into a wall. The energy is transferred through each vehicle. I believe you can find this by searching "Does two cars crashing at 50 mph each = a 100 mph"

But in terms of damage to each vehicle it would seem you are correct, as the force is shared equally between the 2 objects. It would seem that momentum is the deciding factor in car crashes, more so than the kinetic energy.

@oceansurfers thats not true...from the individuals point of view it doesnt matter whether the force is supplied by a brick wall's structural integrity or a bike travelling at 80km/h. The same force is exerted either way and the rider will slow from 80km/h to 0km/h very quickly.

If a bike collided head on with a truck that'd be a different matter, the truck wouldnt feel much but from the bikes point of view it'd be a 160km/h crash
