that is a very plausible argument, indeed. as far as I know, the Ionian colonies of Asia Minor refused to pay the high taxes that the Persian King had imposed to them, so Persians destroyed and burnt to the core their cities.

As far as I read it in Tom Holland's ''Persian Fire'', the revolt was caused by the underestimation of the Ionians about the Persian King. Kyros treated them as peaceful and respectfully as possible, they were so suprised by the generousy of the conqueror that they thought he was a weak king and thus the rebellion was created. It pissed Kyros off,so he punished the revolters by destroying their cities and enslaving them, one of the only cruel acts of Persian rule to show their power.

I think the cultural differences had been quite a reason, triggering revolution. I mean, these two different civilizations were too heterogeneous to assimilate one another, the extreme wealth, luxurious lifestyle and voluptuous exhibitionism of Persians (which is not sth to be ashamed of, of course) were incompatible with the moderate way of life of the greek colonies. Perhaps this was the reason of 'underestimation' as you say, too different mentality...

The greek city-states provided help to their fellow greeks of Asia Minor, ( their common cultural and racial origin was undoubted) and this was the pretext on which persians attacked greeks later. the prime reason however was that the Persian Empire wanted to expand throughout europe as well.

I agree fully. We should all adopt Cyrus' policies on religion to some extent. He was able to rule such a vast expanse of land because he was open to all religions. He allowed religions to coexist peacefully under his rule.
