300 was a highly fictionalized version of historic events. I thought the movie was amazing. And it did nothng to my immense respect and love for all good Iranians today.
Alexander the Great was a Macedonian, not a Greek - the documentary reveals him correctly. The Macedonians conquered equally both the Greeks and the Persians. Today's Greek should stop stealing Macedonian history and stop worshiping a man who killed their ancestors. As a Macedonians I feel sad about what happened in Peria of long ago - my apologies to the Persians - Alexander was a conqueror but also a mass murderer.
Before Alexander the Great launched his expedition to the East, he gathered soldiers from all over Macedonia, referred as a geographical region, of which he was King and the rest of the Greek city-states.
The people of Sparta refused their help, because they were too proud to be under other generals' commands, so Alexander himself ordered the construction of a carving regarding the expedition, written in GREEK instead of your language, ending up saying, on behalf of all the Greeks,(including himself) except for the Spartians. there is plenty of similar proof stating he was Greek, so get a history guys....
I thank you for posting this, This is the answer I really liked to hear. It's hard to find in books the affirmation of that fact, and those youtube nationalists really do confuse me with their false statements, almost letting me believe that.
As I would like to say:
Alexander is one of the persons who don't deserve the title ''The Great''
It's the same with Napoleon, that German King Carl, the list goes on.
It's not because I am Greek, but I think he deserves the title of 'Great', because at the age of 33 he managed to have a vast multinational and prosperous empire, thanks to his strategic genius, fulfilling his personal ambitions, leaving his trademark in peoples' folk culture and history even to this day, though he died so young and his empire was soon scattered.
But because of him, all Persian records are lost since he burned down FUCKING PERSEPOLIS!
I am not a Persian, but like reading Greek and Roman textes, I'd really enjoy the works of maybe great Persian scholars, magis, whatever. And that opportunity of different never came to our western culture!
what was his legacy? His cultural achievements? His legal contributions? Human rights? He was nothing more than an able general, albeit with respect towards Persian culture, but a warmonger and a butcher nonethelss with no plans other than conquering, slaughtering, conquering and slaughtering more.
There is more attached to the title "the Great" than merely killing people you know.
that is a very plausible argument, indeed. as far as I know, the Ionian colonies of Asia Minor refused to pay the high taxes that the Persian King had imposed to them, so Persians destroyed and burnt to the core their cities.
As far as I read it in Tom Holland's ''Persian Fire'', the revolt was caused by the underestimation of the Ionians about the Persian King. Kyros treated them as peaceful and respectfully as possible, they were so suprised by the generousy of the conqueror that they thought he was a weak king and thus the rebellion was created. It pissed Kyros off,so he punished the revolters by destroying their cities and enslaving them, one of the only cruel acts of Persian rule to show their power.
I think the cultural differences had been quite a reason, triggering revolution. I mean, these two different civilizations were too heterogeneous to assimilate one another, the extreme wealth, luxurious lifestyle and voluptuous exhibitionism of Persians (which is not sth to be ashamed of, of course) were incompatible with the moderate way of life of the greek colonies. Perhaps this was the reason of 'underestimation' as you say, too different mentality...
The greek city-states provided help to their fellow greeks of Asia Minor, ( their common cultural and racial origin was undoubted) and this was the pretext on which persians attacked greeks later. the prime reason however was that the Persian Empire wanted to expand throughout europe as well.
of the most important videos in the youtube got around 20000 views but that bitch sings a fucking artless song and gets more than 1 million views, you say it, witch one is better to see? fuck this world that is based and orgnized to be stupid, not to find rights, fuck it.
This is an excellent recreation of the great Persian empire. Unfortunately the site has become a slugfest between opposing groups. Wanton destruction of great architecture and cultures is common to all civilisations. The coptic monks defaced and converted egyptian temples into churches and the muslim did the same with the luxor temple. Alexander destroyed Persepolis and the muslims the Hindu temples
Iran used to be a VERY fun place to live in and visit, full of friendly and happy people. Then the American CIA and British MI6, started Operation Green Belt, and decided to import a mob of moslim sand negros into the country and turn it into an arab middle eastern state. They did the same to afghanistan with the "taliban". Over 1 million iranians and countless afghanis have been murdered by Operation Green Belt & America/Europe's pathetic cold war terrorism operations.
The americans (university of chicago) had borrowed the thousands of tablet inscriptions, and now the american terrorists are holding the artifacts hostage and demanding billions of dollars in extortion money from the Iranians for their return (in addtion to the billions they already stole in the 1970's)
Interestingly, HollyJewwed censors the atrocities and murders commited by the invading greek/macedonian barbarians in their fictional recreations like "alexander" and "300".
Alexander, who admired Cyrus, acted akin to Xerxes when he burned Persopolis. While still great for many reasons, he is dwarfed by Cyrus in greatness.
You make no sense, becouse if you want to compare identity in that sort of gayreek style of way then greeks aren't greeks anymore becouse they changed their religion which was mostly their culture.
Btw the only one that were ruled are the greeks that were ruled by turks and persians, the persian empire ruled 75% of greece for over 200 years and the turks ruled all of greece for over 600 years, now that's what I call ownage:)
LOl what an idiot your are,Iranians were never controled by the greeks, alexanders empire only lasted for 3 years, then ther persian dynastys rose up such as the parthians and the sassaniads, Iranians actually raped the romans in a 600 year war, Iranians were never been arabized they still speak farsi have their own culture, behaviour, and identity,so go fuck yourself you fag.
Alexander call himself , "son of all greeks but not the spartans" he never like them and of course he always respect and admire Cyrus, they both were great.
"Your ancestors invaded Macedonia and the rest of Greece and did us great harm though we had done them no prior injury;... I have been appointed hegemon of Greeks..."
Arrian(86-147AD), Anabasis of Alexander II, 14, 4 (Loeb P.A. Brunt)
actually they did do prior injuries. they burnt the ionian city -controlled by persians- down.that was the start.
greece was not a country at the time, it consisted of states which fought against each other & some allied with persians to win over each other. its not appropriate to bring modern sense of nationalism in when speaking of the anciet world.
+after the invasion he adopted the culture, married persians and called himself an Achamead king.he didnt hate them that much.
I can only speculate why the presenter made such a HUGE mistake about Alex pretending to b Greek....To me its just another cock-up of all those "know it all" Westerners who twist history (which by the way doesnt belong to them...) in a way that confirms their patchy knowledge and HUGE ignorance
I'd also like to point out a very serious mistake here: Alexander was not pretending to b Greek. He was Greek. His name [Alex(Protect)-Andros(Man)], religion, ancestors, education, birthplace etc were all Greek. I really dont get it why/how the presenter did such a mistake
After all Westerners (re)discovered ancient Greek civilization and its heritage, during the Renaissance years (14th through the 17th century AD)and it still goes on up until our days. You simply cant blame the ancient Greeks for all the misfortunes caused by others later on. As a Greek and hopefully as a rational person I cannot see the connection between the two. Cheers
Oh and one more thing: Do not hold the ancient Greeks accountable for what the big powers of the western civilization did to Iran Iraq Vietnam Palestine India Algeria South Africa and so on, thousands of years later.
To topjobs'07: the word "barbarian" was indeed used by ancient Greeks but only to define nations, peoples, tribes etc who were not Greeks. It wasn't used in the same racist/insulting context that it's used today. How this word came to be, might sound somewhat funny but its totally true: when an ancient Greek was trying to verbally communicate with a foreigner of whatever origin, to his ears the whole thing sounded as a continuous "barbarbar" thus the word barbarian...Yes its that simple
what persians brought to the world before the attacks of enemies ?
persians respected all nations, in one united land called persia, allowed them to practice their beliefs, their culture , their language in one land but the offical belief was zorostranisim. we still have many nations living in IRAN. i think the name should change back to persia then everything will be back, we can build another PARSA beside the old one to show the whole world.
also, alexander said in his auto bigography that he was mentally ill, he was sick seeing his father have many wives, and he was told to bring all the wealth of persia to the greeks. wht the greeks and western civilzation brought to the world ? created germany, england, france, america to cause trouble for the rest of the world.
U CAN SAY YEAH FUCK U ALEXANDER AND THE GREEKS cuz he was told to do this , to burn PARSA for a few reasons. persians killed his father secretly Philip II, He was told to burn persian palaces cuz they were number one of the wonders of the world at that time till now, if all had existed , there wouldn't any place for the greeks. they were just jealous of the art persians.
yeah but the difference xerxes burned he felt sorry after and ordered to rebuilt athen and then the greek which they knew that persians were more cilivized they still called them barberians, an insult to the culture of the east and also took the knowlege in science from persians and named it on their own.
I agree fully. We should all adopt Cyrus' policies on religion to some extent. He was able to rule such a vast expanse of land because he was open to all religions. He allowed religions to coexist peacefully under his rule.
Alexander the Gay, not the great.

It's due to him that greek language and culture became widely known, paving the way for christianity, but this is only my viewpoint. :)
bio2811 2 years ago
Christianity had nothing to do with Greek influence. It came long afterwards aided by the Romans in the 8th or 9th Century A.D.
Greek culture of course was spread by Alexander but we Asians did not want it as we had great cultures of our own !.

What makes me interested is why did the Persian province revolted often during history? For example Egypt, or the Ionian colonies of Small Asia.
I mean, if Persia was a great empire, what was the cause of those revolts?
Only nationalism?
