for some years I thought Larry Parks really did sing in this film, until my father told me at the tender age of eleven that it was a man called Al Jolson. I'd never heard of him and was a little disappointed until I realized what a true entertainer Al Jolson was/bit of my growing up days
terrific scene and larry parks was perfect. without his performance film would not have gone over like it did in 1946-7. they picked the right guy. bravo
I just have to keep watching this one Pat....i should be in Philly with the Jolson crowd but i'm stuck here :(( I got the 3 hour dvd of Al's songs on loud though. The neighbours love him...well they have not complained though..lol
lo mas bello de larry parks no puedo crerlo lo co noci e el cine cuando era una niña y hoy me emociona poderlo ver otra vez aprendi sus canciones escuchandoa mi madre cantar eternamente Dios los bendijo con su presencia
In my opinion, the scene in The Jolson Story where he just met Julie, asked her what her pleasure was, she said April Showers, he walked down the runway to her sat down, started to sing, and said "Just for you, just for you"and the way the two of them just look at each other, OMG Does anyone else think that that was a very sensual scene?
Nancy, that isn't Al Jolson you see there: it's Larry Parks. Jolson's voice was used in the songs. Parks was in his early 30s at the time and is sporting a little grey hair and other makeup in this scene to look like he's in his 40s, which is how old Jolson was right before "The Jazz Singer" was made, which is the period that this scene is portraying.
Hey Vic, Great Video and thanks for sharing with us all My friend. I have both of the Larry Parks, Jolson movies on dvd. I've also recorded a cover for April Showers. I haven't put it on my site as yet... Yours Musically ...I'm Listening...The Captain....
@CGJUGO80 OMG ok I'll help you out. I am 71 years old, the year is 2011, I was born in 1939, in 1946, I was 7years old. That's not Al Jolson on the screen, it's Larry Parks, who was playing Al Jolson in both movies, but it's Al Jolson singing, and Larry Parks is just lip syncing (pretending to sing)
@CGJUGO80 I'm sorry if I sounded rude. If you liked Jolson, I highly recommend The Jolson Story & Jolson Sings Again. Larry Parks did one of the most fantastic job of playing someone else. He practiced lipsyncing the songs for months, and he watched clips of Jolson performing so he could get his mannerisms down. Jolson had a way of talking with his eyes while he was singing, and Parks got that down perfect. Also the way Jolson held his hands while he was singing. Unbelievable performances!
@windowsy39 These 2 movies bring back great memories - and they were great early bio pics, however, although Larry Parks made "a" good Jolson, I think he lacked his dynamic. After all, nobody was Jolson - that's why he stood out, just like Judy Davis did a great job of "being" Judy Garland, but she wasn't Judy. Somehow for me Jolson's voice doesn't quite fit Parks...somehow.. Check out some of the real Jolson clips; his sheer joy of performing shows in his eyes.
@friendsfamilyaccount Its about 65 years since this movie came out and Parks died 36 years ago. Ask 99.9% of the people today who was Larry Parks and they won't even know. Really, who gives a crap?
Larry Parks fans and his family give a crap. How rude you are! After you're gone for 36 years, don't you want people to remember who you were, I sure do! Elvis has been gone almost 34 years, and everyone remembers him, you do remember Elvis don't you? 99% of the people of this generation don't know who Glenn Miller was, but that's their loss!
@windowsy39 When you are 6 feet under what difference will it make whether or not people remember you. The main thing is is that G-d remember you for the good you did.
One of lovely Doris' favourites. This reminds me of the GOOD times we had singing along to all the songs when I visited her. Wonderful 'inny' !! .)))

That's Evelyn Keyes. She played Suellen in Gone With the Wind.

Who was the pretty lady in the audience?

If you listen closely to the sound track of The Jolson Story you will hear the old type
optical film audio.
When you listen to the sound track of Jolson Sings Again you will hear far superior audio
quality because in 1949 the audio recordings
were captured on audio tape and not on acetate discs as in the Jolson Story in 1946.
After WW 2 audio tape was first utilized
in Hollywood thus the Jolson Sings Again
better fidelity audio sound track.
