  • I grew up in Ruthin and its a fine little town. Great vid, shame the station shut in '62! You can get the bus from Chester :)

  • This is as good as a spoof video gets.

  • It's got a nice castle. They do medieval banquets there.

  • This is great!

  • Whoo! I live near Ruthin! FTW:) Love this!!:D<3

  • Check out the attached video response where David phones the Mayor of Ruthin...

  • ysgol brynhyfryd!!!!!!!!!!!! shud of put a pic of it up, Love Ruthin its awesome bordering with Rhewl which borders with my village Llanrheadr!

  • I live in Ruthin and its small but good

  • Some of you may be thrilled to know the follow up to 'Ain't Seen Ruthin Yet' will be live in a 10 days or so, featuring the rather dreamy, 'Ruthin Compares To You' - again deliberately mispronounced for the entertainment of the masses. Also, stand by those of you from Risca, Aberpennar, Mold, Abercynon, Bedwas, Betws, Prestatyn, Abercrave and Usk...!

  • @DavidGarlandJones what's the song about Betws?

  • @soothpood Betws Sweet Symphony

  • @DavidGarlandJones I'm guessing that's spoof of the verve. Looking forward to see the video

  • @soothpood Which Betws? & Where is it?:) Its just i live in a betws..:L

  • @Muezza25 ask heem 547#

  • @DavidGarlandJones I've got no problems with your videos David. You certainly have a talent for parodies, I just feel your songs would be better if you didn't crowbar in a mispronounciation just to make it fit. Also, you haven't misspelled Ruthin, you've mispronounced it.

  • screw like, i want a FUCKING LOVE button <3

  • @iamspikeyoko Me too!

  • Ruthin is a great place it's just abit small ___Go visit it ____ Ruthin Person xD

  • @thatdude11ful Treforest, nr Ponty. Coming soon - 13 more Spoof Songs with Welsh place names in the title. Please subscribe!

  • Unfortunately, it's pronounce "rith-in" not ruth (as in rush)-in... Doesn't scan so well, but there you go. Love it, will share with people from Bryneglwys (over the hill from Rhuthun).

  • Waiting now for "The Crynant Game" ....

  • What about Caernarfon then David? have you been there? but I must warn you in advance that BANGOR Gwynedd is the closest train station to go there, even though there is a Welsh Highland Railway there though...:-)

  • Not only have you never been to Ruthin, you can't pronounce it either.

  • That cheered me up, which was needed after the announcement of the royal engagement!

  • Made me smile! Do one about Wrexham!

  • @klootme Someone Suggested - Percy Sledge's soul classic, 'When A Man Lives In Wrexham'... ;-)

    DavidGarlandJones 1 hour ago

  • @DavidGarlandJones there's a joke about Wrexham in which someone mishears that the next act on at a gig is "country and western" then reports back to their friend that next on is "some c**t from Wrexham" (Being originally from Wrexham I can laugh at that.....some wouldn't)

  • Absolutely great - don't worry we have seen Ruthin and it's fab!!!!

  • Glad to know how to pronounce Ruthin before visiting from Australia! Thank you David. Very funny

  • Absolutely brilliant. Who is going to do a song about Cardiff? probably won't be long......

  • I'm from Ruthin I love this video it's great fun and has made me smile. I also love all the sad debate about the pronounciation, does it really matter?... Anyway, now that you have gained such fame from this lovely little town don't you think you should come and visit, you owe us at least that?

  • It's a good spoof, and good publicity for Rhuthun. But just been reading the posts about pronunciation - it's not suprising that some people pronounce it ruthin (rhyming with nuthin) but it IS suprising that when welsh speakers point out that it's incorrect, they still maintain they're right. Surely the correct way to pronounce a name is always in its own language? If outsiders pronounced places like Gloucester and Leominster how they're written, would the 'ruthin' brigade's stance be the same?

  • i have seen ruthin!! - top one!!

  • funny video nice one!

  • Wonderful - my home town out there for the masses to enjoy!

  • ...and still the hit count rises... \o/

  • @Cinnyhunny Nope. Just 5,000! Thanks.

  • ruthin for life hell yeah, it is a very nice town and has alot of history t it proberly the nicest town in wales visit it!

  • 25K!!! Thanks world!

  • soooo good lol almost wish i was welsh :))

  • soooo good lol

  • this has certaintly put ruthin on the map! 5 thousand hits? a lot more, keep up the good work david!!

  • Crackin work David!

Definitely do a Mold one..........Moldfinger may be your best bet, yes....

as Yr Wyddgrug may not work too well

  • @NevsTash he should do one bout Treuddyn ..

  • Such a shame he pronounced Ruthin incorrectly the entire song!! It should be as RITHin :/

  • Da iawn David.

  • David what's up with your Wikipedia page? deleted Aug 15th?

  • Haha

  • LOL

  • Ha Ha! Fancy seeing you here Gerald ... been posting this on FaceBook (It's Phil From Maes Garmon)

Nice one David BTW ... I'm spreading the word ... I reckon "Stuck in the middle of Crewe" if you're on a railway theme would be good :) Maybe without the ear cutting bit

Can't believe the ridiculous debate about how it's pronounced David's is absolutely correct because 1. If you were English and had never heard it before you would say rUthin 2 it rhymes with nOthin wheras nIthin clearly doesnt

  • gr8t

  • There's a song being sung 'bout Ruthin

    That's Ruthin up near Rhyl.

There's a Ruthin down near Pencoed

That's not the one that's brill.

  • @Llanrofa Excellent work. Bravo!

  • @DavidGarlandJones A better last line would be "It's near St Mary Hill." Couldn't believe me eyes when I saw a sign for Ruthin in the middle of the Vale. Thought I'd gone all Tardis...

  • 5000? 22, 409 at this point in time. Good going, well deserved, really enjoyed this

  • Love it - I'm from Mold... just round the corner....

  • @geralddavison Never been there either I'm afraid. Shirley's 'Mold Finger' might make it on to the Xmas compilation.

  • I`ve lived in Ruthin for 6 years and have never heard it pronounced ` Rithin `. Mind you I`m from Liverpool and really Liverpool should be pronounced, ` Lyverpool `, as in the Liver birds., so what do I know ? According to the spell checker, both `Ruthin` and ` Rhuthin` are wrong, so there !

  • @Cartoonsbystan Cardiff is pronounced exactly that, except by people who live in Cardiff who call it Care-diff. You pays your money... ;-)

  • @DavidGarlandJones I used to know Cardiff quite well, I used to deliver cars there, and Newport, in fact all over S. Wales and N. Wales

  • I'm actually going to Ruthin with my girlfriend on Monday, I might make a video for you David ;)

  • Class! Played footy for Ruthin years ago & still dive through there a lot. Good place!

  • haha, my ma went to school in Ruthin.

    nice work

  • @hairyarse Yes, it was Beeching that did for the railway in Ruthin, though a landslide closed the line to Corwen back in the 50s. I think the station actually closed in '63, not '62 as David has it - I can just about remember a steam loco in the station yard, and I don't remember '62!

  • @arwelp According to page 202 of RJ Butts', 'Directory of Railway Stations: Details Every Public And Private Passenger Station, Halt, Platform And Stopping Place, Past And Present (1st ed.). Sparkford: Patrick Stephens Ltd. ISBN 1-8526-0508-1. OCLC 60251199, Ruthin Station closed on the 30th April 1962. However, it could well be that there continued to be some freight and industrial train traffic into 1963. Hope this clears things up, station spotters!

  • Very cool :o)

  • @mutleyisbarking

I completely agree. I live in Ruthin and therefore know the lingo ;-) The song makes me smile.

You've even made it into our local paper (The Denbighshire Free Press) this week!

  • @blodynbillie WHAT!? I've made it into the local press?? Oh no, did you mean David and his song? I lived in Ruthin once...ah the memories...well I have one memory... I was very young.

  • @blodynbillie I may organise a charabanc outing from South Wales to Ruthin later this year for a pub crawl and maybe a couple of impromptu renditions of my 'hit'.

    ;-)

  • lol woo too my home town!

  • Hi David, couldn't help noticing the copy of "Flagellation" on the bookshelf behind you, sounds a bit naughty - any good? : )

  • @rhinotinto ;-)

  • Have you presented this to the Snowdonia tourist board (or even the Ruthin tourist board if such a thing exists)

I'm sure this would get people wanted to come to Ruthin by the coach load.

Obviously not by the train load :)

They might want to edit that last part out.

That was all Lord Beechings doingI'll wager, closing the station I mean.

  • Awesome.

    Keep the faith.

  • @snoopdogg99 do you need a hug?

  • Love it...I'd like to release my personal favourite,"I've been to paradise but I've never been to Neath"

  • Brilliant! :)

  • Great fun! thank you!

  • It's brilliant! Love it! You'll be famous one day soon! :)

  • @ SnoopyDoggz99 Yo! Where iz you mun? Not still out with iwz friends? Or you 'aving a bit of kip before goin' back to iwz day job, like? 'Scuse the pronooooounciation, like. Missing you already. Mwaa!

  • @modelworker1 i think you'll be okay dude.

  • @snoopdogg99 I'm not sure how many times you've clicked on ths video Mr Dogg but you've certainly provided at least 20 of the 19425 hits to date. Your dedication to our cause and your contribution to our success has to be noted. Thank you!

  • @ snoopdogg99 Yo dude! Respect!

  • Great Job on Ruthin David ... Come to Magor for the next one..... we need you !! Yes, that's the Magor near the Severn bridge.

  • Yes, I agree it's brilliant! Loved it. I've always called it Ruthin, I got lost once going to Rhyl and ended up there.... :)

  • There IS a young(?) legend called Jones Makes me laugh 'til I rattle my bones He performed a fun song But pronounced Ruthin wrong Cue You Tubers' repetitive moans Just relax, chill out and enjoy His intention wasn't to annoy Celebrate what he's done It's all a bit of fun DGJ...Ruthin's new golden boy! Peace out.
  • @mutleyisbarking Well said! and I couldn't agree more!!

  • No such place as Gwent, but never mind. "Monmouthshire" was too many syllables I guess...

  • @NewHeavySounds I think it might be easier to re-invent the wheel than to...well, you know what I mean

  • hahahahhahah

  • Wicked I really enjoyed that, any chance of a Rhyl spoof David?

  • @glassbloweruk "Ain't Nothing Like The Rhyl Thing"

  • @glassbloweruk "Ain't Nothing Like The Rhyl Thing"?

  • i live in Ruthin...this is classic...brilliant!

  • Brill.

  • Brilliant, Loved it! :-)

  • Fantastic! Well done David! And Enzo too!

  • could do with a better video to go with this david, but its quite catchy. i like it anyway

  • GREAT LAUGH THE JUMPING ON THE WAGON FOR THIS KINDA THING BUT WHAT HAPPENED AT RADIO CARDIFF YOUR INTERVIEW WAS A SHOCKER MAN!!!

  • @kidkustom So many reasons! Made a film whilst there which might explain a few things tho'. Cheers.

  • DAVID GOOD LAUGH YOUR VIDEO, BUT WHAT THE HELL WENT WRONG AT RADIO CARDIFF YOUR INTERVIEW WAS A SHOCKER

  • @snoopdogg Sorry, wasn't that aware of your limitations. Can make it really simple if necessary...

  • @modelworker1 'seems glib'

  • ha this is fantastic ! Wonder if yours will get taken down too for copyright like the newport cover :p ?

btw there's nothing wrong with your pronounciation of Ruthin in the song, its just the english spelling and how non locals would pronounce it. The welsh, and original spelling (Rhuthun), which locals would use, is said differently though, as i'm sure has been pointed out already !

  • @droptheleash0 1. Might do - prob have to get a few more hits first! 2. Thanks for clarifying. DGJ

  • @droptheleash0 incorrect. the pronounciation is how english people would say it. europeans and americans always pronounce it correctly - as do tourists from the world over.

  • @snoopdogg99 No, thats how non welsh speakers pronounce it, english or not. I can make my mind up for myself thank you very much ;) !

  • @droptheleash0 incorrect. i am not friends with a single non-Welsh speaker who pronounces it like that. some of my english friends, naturally, may initially pronounce it that way - but as soon as i explain it, all agree that it is best to pronounce it correctly. to do otherwise is a form of cultural imperialism.

  • @snoopdogg99 yes, I should have said none welsh and non locals as well. I agree, if someone I knew seriously insisted on pronouncing it in that way after being corrected, i'd think they were an idiot, but the person who made this video isn't a local and i'm guessing not a welsh speaker, and so the video having been made in that context, I thought the pronounciation was fine considering the context. No its not the correct one, but a simple correction would have enough surely ?

  • @droptheleash0 sure. however, what has irked so many people is that the writer/performer has steadfastly refused to publically acknowledge his error - instead trying to pass it off as a matter for interpretation - which it is not.

  • @snoopdogg99 oh right, well that's something else altogether then

  • @snoopdogg99 Out of interest snoop, what's your opinion of the pronunciation of Llangwm near Haverfordwest, by both Welsh and non-Welsh speaking locals?

  • @NewHeavySounds i fail to see the relevance, but: as far as i can see, there is only one way to pronoucne this place name. to not use the 'double L' sound is a mark of a dullard, that much is certain.

  • @snoopdogg99 Interesting that you fail to see the relevance, which I guess illustrates that you're unaware of at least some of the myriad idiosyncrasies of pronunciation throughout Wales. For all locals there (Welsh and non-Welsh speakers alike), the village is pronounced "Langham", rather than what we'd expect. And it's be so for generations apparently. So, who's right? The locals, or those who would apply a set of 'standard' welsh phonics? Only wondrin' like.

  • @NewHeavySounds not trying to be a arse here, but surely the only reason the double L was dropped from the pronounication in the first place would have been through english influence, which is born from not correctly pronouncing the word right in the first place, therefore it having carried on being pronounced wrongly, rather than it being a regional difference or something. I don't see any reason at all why any welsh place name would not pronounce the Ll except for that reason. Just my opinion

  • @droptheleash0 I suppose the question then is, when does it 'become' right as it were? Or are the locals always going to be wrong? Seems harsh. Anyway, we should be wondering when DGJ will tackle / mispronounce more Welsh towns.

  • @NewHeavySounds Hmm, well I guess it all depends on your definition of 'right'. To the locals who call the place by that name I guess to them it's right, because thats how they refer to that place. But even though that pronounciation may be used by the majority of people, to me it doesn't become right. I guess whether its 'right' or not depends on how important you view that it is pronounced 'correctly', and to me personally, with a dislike anglicisation of the welsh language, that is important

  • @snoopdogg99 @snoopdogg99 can we not turn the comments into a section on the ignorance of the english anyway, plenty more appropriate videos for that on youtube I think you'll agree

  • @droptheleash0 i agree entirely dude. totally. it's just confusing when people, out of some kind of misplaced 'loyalty' to this video, insist that the pronouncation is 'correct', when clearly it isn't.

  • @droptheleash0 Thanks for pointing that out, saves me having to bother... as an English immigrant to N.Wales, I like to respect the names a bit...

  • @Saighton top attitude dude. shame the writers/performers of garland jones don't have that level of respect.

  • Classic. Which town next.

  • @27ijt Night Boat To Caerau

  • @DavidGarlandJones Brecon up is hard to do - Its Merthyr on the dancefloor - Sweet Home Aberpennar - Stairway to Nefyn - Borth in the USA (not!) - Builth, this City - Don't Look Back in Bangor - Bat Out of Rhyl - Pontcanna Fields Forever...

  • you have made it in to the sky news article about goldie looking chains newport parody

  • well done david funny as fook !! like the ending ! im from the port !

  • More... And Ruthin looks verrry nice

  • @snoopdogg99 Like it! It's much better when you stick to short words. Now if you can just cut back on all those CAPITALS, we'll really be getting somewhere. It just gives the impression that you're ranting, which I'm sure you're not really.

  • @modelworker1 what on earth are you talking about?

  • @snoopdogg99 Like it ! It's much better when you stick to short words. Now if you can just cut back on all those CAPITALS, we'll really be getting somewhere. It merely gives the impression that you're a ranting fool, which I'm sure you're not really.

  • AWESOME! I think this is better than the Newport one if I'm totally honest.

  • @DavidGarlandJones

Fair enough David. Good effort. I've never been to Ruthin either, so not sure how people up there pronounce it. I suppose usage is the key. A parody of Katy Perry's California gurls as South Wales boys coming soon.

    Cheers.

  • Erm. Sorry to be a pedant and all, but it's pronounced Rithin.

    Chwarae teg though.

  • @ysbryd7 well said ysbrid - it was a lazy, ignorant, mistake. and TRUST ME - everyone up there pronounces it correctly - barring some of the english folk.

  • DGJ you rock dude :) respect

  • Nice one :-)

  • Cracking Vid David, what's next?....Stairway to Nevern?

  • @RockyGower Nah! "It's Merthyr on the dancefloor" with Sophie Ellis Wrexham

  • I love the pause when you came out of Pontypridd station, David; it's the same one everyone does when they realise the entire station smells of piss.

  • Snoopdogg. Tw*t.

Have I got the basics right?

  • @NewHeavySounds i think you'll be fine if you just relax a little.

  • well done this is brilliant lol

  • Just brilliant.........now do one about Llandrindod Wells. LOL.

  • @snoopdogg99 Should never underestimate regional influences on language. I see you've opted to use regional spelling variations of words like 'dependent' and 'pronunciation' yourself. I put these down to regional influences as surely they can't be down to educational factors.

  • @modelworker1 glib.

  • I'm a Welsh ex-pat living in the U.S. and have watched this many times! As a Welsh speaker from North Wales, I've always pronounced Ruthin like 'Nuthin'! Either way it's funny - okay! Us Welsh Americans love it!

  • @bashibach 'seems disengenuous'

  • I got caught by a fellow shopper singing this in the fruit and veg section at Asda today. The passer by, who was selecting a pineapple, joined in...map dance and all! There is definitely a happening happening...or is that a hoppening hoppening...so much debate about pronunciation it's hard to know whuts whot.

  • @mutleyisbarking Might I ask which branch of Asda you were in?
