Thanks a bunch i bought a top fin 20 and did what you did to your filter and i have it on my 20 gallon. But i use a 5 gallon instead of a 10g as where the water goes
i have the same filter and did this same set up. its near impossible to get the flow even and perfect. if the gph is off in the slightest it will flood. no one try this, screw this video. screw this guy. i tried this set it up the same filter and all. You can not even the flow . Worst idea ever. Fuck this video
@feedthemachine99 i have a ball valve its set up the same as yours. i spent hours trying to get the flow right. never could. if its off by 1 gph it will not work. and your with an overflow you do not need a ball valve at all. yea this simple set up DOESN'T WORK. the end.
An overflow box and a return pump will still not match exact GPH,,you do still need a ball valve to adjust the return.Even 2 exact pumps with the same rated GPH will not match EXACT!
@feedthemachine99 You also have to consider your head loss and PVC diameters,saying it doesn't work is not quite accurate It may not be as good for smaller systems,say 55 gallons or less,but on large systems where the volume is over 150 its not too noticeable if off by a gallon or 2 either way Just top off every night ..Instead of being a cuss,why not ask for more direction or advice.
What's wrong with putting the intake line on the bottom of the filter does it have to b on the back of sides? Your reply would be greatly appreciated. Thanks man
I'm sure that would work also,,the reason i didn't was because the bottom of this type of filter is not smooth..It has ridges and would have been harder to get a nice bead of silicone around the pvc
Lots of comments since i last checked..Thanks for looking...I am no longer running this however..Not because it was faulty or bad ...simply because i upgraded and needed much more flow to my algae screen than this would provide ...It worked great for the time i used it
Sorry I may be stupid but wouldnt the sump pump and the filter have to have the same EXCACT flow or one will overflow. I dont really understand how this works. If you filter runs faster then your pump the sump will overflow and if your pump goes faster then the filter then tank will over flow. Being off by even the tiniest little bit would cause it to eventually overflow am I right?
you know thats not really an overflow box. an overflow box is where the water surface spills over the edge of the box and into a drain to the sump. what you have is essential just a pump to the sump and a sump pumping back to the tank. but it seems like it works well anyways. i hope that it proves to be enough flow.
When i loose power the filter shuts off too so no more water is pumping down to the sump,,and the return line does back siphon a little but it doesn't overflow the sump
and whats funny i was going to post a video but i never did but i might post how to do a sock holder i did 2 of them for my 150 gallon saltwater aquarium and they work fine and whats good about it is that the sucktion of the emperrors are nice and quiet cause of that motor well good luck to you
i like your idea just 1 question i did the same thing to 2 out of my 3 emperrors but instead of the top bulk heads like you did i put the pcv pipes on the bottom comming down to a t with 1" pipe then on the sump a control switch for my water flow i started laughing when i saw this sorry my friend but it was funny to me when i saw this that theres someone else with the same idea i left the motor in mine to do the sucking did you cause it works great take care
Hmm,,this is a vid about an overflow,,but thanks for the tip...how many CT's have you kept..? both of mine were fine...had this one about a year and a half .Its my humu who has killed new additions,not the clown.. Stubs ,,the algae screen isn't installed yet..check out my other vids to see how quite it really is ..

YES YES YES... genius!!! i was looking to make mor water circulation and look for DIY over flow and i saw this..... i got rid of the fresh water tank and made it salt so i have this hang on the back also... so i will use the same idea as you !!!!! goood job...

I guess your just a dolt then...You need to have a ball valve ,,even with a conventional overflow box you need one...

You are correct,,This is why you Must install ball valves .....
Even on conventional overflows you have to do this..I no longer use this set-up and now use gravity fed overflow boxes,,but you still need ball valves
