This is really beautiful work. I'm curious about how the finished rendering on Skunk Fu was done. Was the final cleanup, the "ink and paint", all done in Flash?
@BillFugate The great part about animating with these characters was that they were made with just vector paint... no lines.. so you can move and meld all the pieces. Need an inbetween? just go bend that arm you made. And they were gold for shape tweening parts. Each part of the character was separated into several layers... hands ( palm and fingers) chest ( white spot, and black mass underneath) etc. Each part was then separated into a layer inside each symbol.
@aleinatonna lol Its all good, did you help make the kits for these? if so thats so bad ass... The best character rig's ive ever seen for a show. Well thought out and it really was the best designed show for flash.
@jonlambe I only animated the walk/run cycles, and while doing that I added more arms, eyes, mouths, tails and legs to the library. It was really handy animating with it. And it was easy especially because the characters had no outline, really smart choice. After that I started storyboarding on the show.
Oh wow, bravo! As a fellow animator i'm trying to self teach myself flash and these walk cycles are fantastic. Love the animation in skunkfu. I was very surprised to hear at first that it was all done in flash.
hey! I animated some scenes of that show! i'm an animator here in philippines and i started animating skunkfu here in topdraw! and completed it in malaysia rocketfish studio!.... hahahah! its tough to please the directors!!!!
The walk is pretty fluid but I would like to make a suggestion. When a character does not blink you destroy all the life that you intended to create. That is in the Illusion of Life book by the masters at the Disney Studio.
Hi, thanks for the comment. I made this walk cycle during the preproduction of Skunk Fu and it was supposed to be the animation reference for all the Skunk walks in the show, so that the animators oversea could keep a personality and style continuty for the character. This is why it doesn't need any blinks or particular facial expression.
I perfectly know the Johnston/Thomas book you mentioned, but thanks for your tip.
agreed, his walk is hilarious enough to have him be chairman of the ministry of silly walks. (a lil' monty python reference for those who think I'm insane)
Yes I was one of the animators at the Cartoon Saloon studio in Ireland. I did storyboard too at some point. And yes, it was very cool working on the show.
already was one, it was on kids WB, which is not cancelled, sicne turner owns cartoon network as well, all the shows that showed signs of interest in the nealson rating reports, are being moved over to cable partner, cartoon network
love this, I've been checkn' out walk cycles tonight and this is the best i've seen so far, great work.

Nice walk cycle. It's great to see when cutout animation still can have that classic animated quality. Nice.

i rarely used motion tweens in this walk cycle, it's almost all traditional animation, drawn with the brush tool.
