African Americans, women, etc. have RARELY ever gotten their rights that they have today as a result of a "popular vote." What is right isn't always popular, but what is popular isn't always right. At the time the US Supreme Court struck down laws banning interracial marriages, 9 of 10 Americans opposed the practice. Today it is a non-issue.
Courts are NOT there to protect the will of the majority! That is a function of the legislatures. Independent courts were created to protect the RIGHTS of individuals against tyranny and oppression. The reason that there is a "rapid rise" is because it is NOT quite as stigmatized in this country as it once was for TWO reasons:
First, radicals in the gay community decided it was time to take a stand and fight for our right to live our ONE LIFE as we see fit. Over time, our friends and families started to realize that we're not so different and we're not so bad. Those who say we're child molesters need to read a book called "CRIMINOLOGY: Fourth Edition" by Bierne and Messerschmidt who quote NUMEROUS studies all with the same result... child molesters were victims themselves and sexual orientation is NOT a factor!
And the SECOND reason for the "rapid rise" is that ALLIES IN THE STRAIGHT COMMUNITY are taking stands for us now as well! People say, "There is too much gay television these days." Does anyone ever look at a family sitcom and think of it as "straight television?" The nations that don't seem to be largely Muslim (nothing against Muslims BTW), such as Iran, Iraq, Saudi-Arabia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Pakistan, Somalia, Uganda, Yemen, Ethiopia, Algeria and the beat goes on. Many of these countries have the death-penalty or life imprisonment just for BEING gay. The US is NOT in good company.

My question (and I think you know this) was why the housewife doesn't get to decide how much military equipment is purchased, but at the same time has to pay for medical treatment individually. If I remember my history right, US forces invaded British Territory (which later became the Dominion of Canada). Invaded on 3 separate occasions I think. But, also if I remember correctly, the US forces were kicked out (and the capital was burnt in retaliation for the burning of York). Am I right? The US only fought 1 war of independence.

@blueray1969 in 1812 king george tried to take back America in 1812 and canadian troops helped invade the United States..not the other way around. even today you can see burn marks on the White House from it having been set on fire by british troops....and canadians were with them...i dodnt get that from a book. i have seen the burn marks myself. you are the ones twisting things. one of my ancestors foght in the revolutionary war and one of his sons died during the war of 1812 .

It's like referring to cities getting bombed in Nazi Germany, without pointing out that Germany started the second world war. Would the White House have been burnt if US forces hadn't invaded Canada and burnt York previously? What's the relevance of your ancestors to this story?

But the family name originates on the English/Scottish border but I have no idea if any of them ever emigrated to America or Canada, so no idea whether my ancestors ended up defending their homes from a US invasion or not.

As the Napoleonic War was coming to an end, the US givernment became fearful that Britain would be able to send over massive force and consequently abandoned its war aims (which were, essentially, to add the Canadian colonies to the USA) - not quite a 'fight for independence'.

The fact of the British Empire did not justify the actions of Tsarist Russia or the Us during the same period. "We did it cos they did it" is hardly a justification, is it. But that's 'off-topic' - I was merely pointing out that that particular war was partly caused by US expansionary policy.

I just arrived back to Ithaca from my full time job and have class in one hour. Okay, now you've gone too far. First, you need to look into our national history. African Americans, women, etc. have RARELY ever gotten their rights that they have today as a result of a "popular vote." What is right isn't always popular, but what is popular isn't always right. At the time the US Supreme Court struck down laws banning interracial marriages, 9 of 10 Americans opposed the practice. Today it is a non-issue.

Courts are NOT there to protect the will of the majority! That is a function of the legislatures. Independent courts were created to protect the RIGHTS of individuals against tyranny and oppression. Why ANYONE is acting surprised that the courts and the majority are NOT in agreement is BEYOND ME! Obviously people don't pay attention in their history classes, or you're all going to school in all-white jurisdictions who don't care about these issues.

Over time, our friends and families started to realize that we're not so different and we're not so bad.
