Quiet a few years have past since I picked up my old banjo. When I was younger I tried to play Scruggs style and I could play a few songs. As you know circumstances can change your life. You changed mine, Not with just teaching me. I`m learning.. Whats more important I got a piece of my life back. I don` know if I`ll ever be as good as these younger pickiers but I love it as much or more, again Thanks
David, your vids are so wonderful. I thank you for posting 'em. I'm still having trouble getting used to clawhammer. I've played Seeger style pick n brush up until now; and getting used to the down pick with the back of my finger is tough. Can you possibly do a demo on how pick n brush is different from clawhammer? They seem so similar. Am I just as well off sticking with pick n brush? Do they produce the same results? I can't tell.
David continues to carry-on a wonderful tradition. His method of instruction is easy to understand... so that we may join him in keeping-it-alive. And yes he is the same in person as he is in his shows and instructional videos. Thanks David!
Surely double thumbing is when you use the thumb after every downstroke - what you seem to be teaching (beautifully) is usually called drop thumbing? Have I got this wrong?
That's the way I understand it. Drop thumb to hit any string other than the 5th string, double thumbing to play the 5th string after each down stroke.
I think you're right. Drop thumbing is using your thumb to play strings other then the 5th, and double thumbing is playing the 5 string on the offbeat rather then, bump-dit-y, it's more like bump-a-dit-y, a and y being 5th strings.

Daivd, thank you for the outstanding lesson on clawhammer. Your advice "Don't practice your mistakes" is the best. Big time help for this novice!!
