  • Is the noise you speak of added to the monitor/output signal, or to the preamp/input signal? I'm considering buying this just to feed my studio monitors

  • @prom3th I'm going to revisit this test. I think the cable I used might have been botched. I did some recording with it on my MKH-60 and AT4073a the other day and didn't have any hiss I had in this video.

  • I think the audio from whatever you were hooked into with the lav mic sounded much better.

  • so im a n00b and i just bought this, but i have no idea how to play my guitar through the pre amp into fl studio... anyone care to share some knowledge?

  • Liked the video. I'm confused about the 1/4 monitor out though. Isn't that a line level output? Wouldn't that create a problem going into a DSLR mic level input?

  • If anybody could open this thing up and send me pics of the insides Send me a messege. I'm going to buy one in a month or so and I want to see if there is anything obvious I could do to it to improve the sound quaility.

  • very informative, well produced, and entertaining video, subscribed :)

  • thank you, very informative.

  • Right, just bought this and I'm using it with a Rode NTG-2. It's very noisy. Am I doing something wrong or is this actually a piece of junk?

    I

  • @VexedFilms How noisy! I have Rode NGT-2 and feeding it into Tascam DR100. Been rather disappointed with results. Are you still feeling the Art USB pre a piece of junk, because so far it seems my best solution.

  • @MrOchre its performing perfectly with the ntg-2 battery powered. Are you on phantom power?

I have the ART running into the Zoom H1 ;)

  • @VexedFilms Right, basically using phantom power, it's noisy. With the NTG-2 on battery power, this unit is clean and great ;)

  • It's seems like a lot of work but now any xlr microphone can be used with phantom power and it produces very low noise audio. I'm in the process of building a rig to support the USB Pre and my T3i. I do not like to sync up audio to video, so this is an easy way to upgrade audio quality (like buying a Rode NT3). Also, I can use a twenty foot xlr cable extention and boom stand for interviews.

  • This is a GREAT budget preamp with the following caveats...(1) You'll need quality cables (2) two Audio Technica CP8201 in line transformers. So, I've got (a) one Monster XLR male to y split XLR females (MCLMX2FX), (b) one Monster 1/8 stereo to y split 1/4 female and (c) two XLR male to 1/4 male patch cables. My Rode M3 is plugged in to the USB Pre input with (a), the camera with (b) the two AT CP8201s and (c) two patch cables into the AT CP8201s. The sound is very good.

  • Ok, a couple of things. Firstly you say "this guy" too much.

Secondly, are you using 1/4" to RCA adapters, then a Phono to 1/8" to cable?

Also, should the XLR cable be balanced or unbalanced and why use an XLR splitter is you still get stereo sound from a single input?

  • Subscribed because of the intro and the "Subscribe, *haaaaaaaaaaaaaa*"

  • Can you plug headphones into this to monitor audio? And if you can do you need magic lantern. And if you can't is there any way you can monitor audio without magic lantern? Please respond I am really interested in buying one of these.

  • What kind of socket did you use on the housing? Is this something that you could post a link for?

  • Guys, please don't judge the audio from this device from the clips in this video. The guy making it should really have used his lavalier mic rather than the shotgun. The shotgun sound is badly edited. The pre's on this guy are VERY clean. I've used it on a number of projects now and I'm very happy with the results. I've linked to a corporate video I made using the ART usb dual pre with a lavalier mic. /watch?v=9Ss8-GoFw2w

  • @ChrisGallimoreMusic There was no editing on the Shotgun mic audio. That is exactly what was recorded at the camera. The pre's on the Art are clean enough but they get noise as you add more gain. Part of the problem is that the Azden shotgun doesn't put out a strong signal. The gain from the Art is turned up to boost the levels and it's pre's show through. If you use this with a wireless mic that has a much stronger output, you will effectively mask the noise in the arts gain.

  • @onelonedork I understand where you're coming from, but, in my experience, the sound quality would be at least comparable to whatever you're using to record the audio from your lav. All my location stuff is shot with the usb dual pre and I have nothing but good things to say about it. However in this video there was a discernible drop in quality. The most obvious factor would be the change of mic. I'd suggest it's slightly misleading and a better 'real world' test would be to use the same mic.

  • Best part starts at 3:00. XD

  • The G2 sounds pretty awesome.

  • In the description under equipment you didn't put the art.

  • what are you doing/using to record your audio when you're not demonstrating the preamp? It sounds really good

  • @beaurosario Info is in the description.

  • I got an even cheaper way, get a 3.5mm splitter with 2 XLRF ends. than get a cheap phantom power box with 2 xlrf and 2 xlrm. connect the splitter to the xlrm intputs on the box and your 1 or 2 xlr cables that run to your mic(s) into the female intputs on the box. turn on phantom power and there you go :) i made mine for 28 bucks

  • just subcribed today. i just bought a canon t3i about 2 months ago and i am very very new to filming with dslrs. you're videos are extremely informative. im learning a lot from them. thank you soooo much for making these videos.

  • Still not sure how to connect it to the camera

  • Am I the only one that thought it sounded a little unnatural?

  • @gooberman86 a little? imo it sounded shit, thou the mic isn't the best either.

  • @shliopka but the quality want that bad. can be fixed with a bit of work. obviously this one isnt for serious projects, but can be a practical solution for low budget stuff

  • @ArturoDabdoub That exactly right.

  • What shotgun mic are you using for the actual video before you connect your device your talking about.

  • Great stuff. So my question is... do you like the sound? I have a 7D and want to get better sound. Is this the way to go? I can not afford the Juice link or the external Mic.

    Thanks

BTW - the subscribe thing is even funnier and more odd - I like it though. :)

  • Could this be used from a Zoom H4N to a rode NTG-2 as a preamp?

  • @charlesfrankfilm if you are getting a field recorder for ntg-2, don't get h4n. get tascam dr100. check out some forums at cinema 5d

  • @LJtutorials Well I already have the NTG-2 and the H4N..... I'm aware that the preamps are better on the DR100 but getting that really isnt in my budget right now. That's why I want to use this as a preamp to boost up the low audio issues with the H4N and the NTG-2..... if that is possible....

  • I dont like the audio q.

  • Lol at the ending! ....ooooOOOOOO

Does anyone know how this pre-amp compares with the juicedlink ones (like the cx231)?

  • Lol at the ending! ....oooooooOOOOOO

  • im not hatin' but i really hate your intro :S

  • @IRondestvedt

yeah same. love the show but i always forward the intro.

Cool preamp. What's the audio when you're not using the preamp? recorded in camera direct from the mic?

  • Next time, his head will explode....

  • lol new outro??? Even scarier! :DD

  • is it powered from usb as well?

  • @JogBird If you would have listend better you would know that it run's a 9inc. battery, listen from about 0:30 and forward ;)

  • @JogBird Battery or usb powered.

  • Can you tell me what your normal audio setup is for your videos? I wasn't sure if you already made an article or video about it, but was hoping you could point me in the right direction if that were the case.

  • Thanks. I have been looking for a preamp. Your timing is perfect.

  • usually i love ART preamps, however this one sounded thin and harsh

  • lol, at your new ending. Cool review, not looking for something like this for filming at the moment, but good to know.

  • I have that Amp, slightly different model, a little bigger. (says Tube MP Project series on the top.)

  • @MacManLtd nice.
