check the waves those are some choppy freaking seas one minute its right under you the next it drops away if you dont land level or the deck comes slamming into you youll most likelyend up in the water
When Army and Air Force chopper pilots start to think they're hot $h17, they send them for deck landing qualifications--where everything is moving, you have to sort of slam/pin the helicopter to the deck, and missing a landing could easily mean going swimming (if not drowning in a fast sinking and wildly disorienting an inverted fuselage). BTW, good catch on the OPSEC paddle562.
@svregrcpt As a note, we were given permission by the Capt. to video and take pics of anything available to us. The ship was in full fleet formation and it was VERY public, so lets knock off the OPSEC stuff.
That wasn't bad at all, I'm a fixed wing plane and helicopter pilot and I can see that the wind was blowing pretty hard and he did the right thing by taking it slow, I think it was a great job.
wouldnt it be better if the helicopter could attach it itself to the deck after it landed. it took those people quite a while to attach it to the ground
Alright, you got it, you got it..bring er down nice and easy, comon', you got it...bring her down niiiiice and slow..okay..GOD DARNIT LAND THE THING ALREADY!!!
@HDSporty4Me That wasn't an Apache, that was a Black Hawk. Black Hawks are just people transporters - notice how the Black Hawk doesn't have missiles.
What really doesn't show is how the deck moves when a ship this tall rolls. When the deck is 30 to 40 feet off the water a very small roll produces a very large lateral movement of the deck. So even though the roll is only +/- 2-3 degrees the landing spot is traveling left and right far enough and fast enough to make it hard to touch down safely. Add the turbulence acting on the helo and the pilot has a difficult task.
I guess that 12 people didn't understand epicosity of a guy having a hard time controlling a multi-million dollar helicopter in the wind and avoiding crashing it into a multi-billion dollar ship? ^__^
I know the Canadian Navy invented a device they call "The Beartrap" where the helicopter lowers a cable, which is then attached to a winch. The helicopter maintains a hover while the winch pulls it down to the deck, eliminating much of the risk during landings in rough seas...
Is this system not practical for this application?
@EruditeCanadian no not hardly that a search and rescue bird if its gotta go its gotta go and thats not practical for any helo its called wave off if something goes wrong u gotta be able to get outta there without wasting time cutting a cable and i wanna see the dude big enough to hook a winch cable to the deck under the rotor wash of a ch53 or even a phrog can take u off ur feet
Ship turns into the wind so that the "relative" wind is 30 degrees off the bow. So the wind isn't generally that big of an issue. Try the N. Pacific or Bering Sea in January/Feb. on a 378 ft. CG cutter. Much more "fun" especially under typical search & rescue ops.
Im not saying that was an easy landing, nor could I do it, but looked pretty smooth to me, you can see the pilot fighting what Im ASSuming was a cross wind, but also looked like he knew exactly what he was doing
@aligerous the horizon shows the ship was rolling, not pitching. the angle is looking out on the port side, not straight ahead. towards the end of the video, the helo is still (for the most part) in the center of the frame but at 0:51 the horizon is behind it is very high -- out of the frame. 8 seconds at 0:59 later, the horizon is very low, just above the rotor, and by the end of the video its gone back up and out of frame again.

I thought the guy did fine. Wobbled a bit in the wind but when he set it down he landed nearly perfectly, no bounce or sliding.
