great video, thanks so much! i climbed alum trail up to the bluff today and it was beautiful. next time i'm going to the top! did you spend the nite at the cabins? great idea to record the experience, i've been reading the descriptions on your website as well and the videos compliment them nicely. I may bring my video camera next time I go, it captures the experience better than pictures alone I think.
Mt LeConte is the TALLEST mountain in the smokies (not the highest.) because mountains are measured by sea level not by relative height to their surroundings. So a mountain at a elevation of 8000 feet will only look 100 feet tall if it sits on a 7900 foot plateau, like a lot of the rockies, kinda sad. Mt LeConte rise in elevation is arguably taller and more dramatic than any mountain in the Appalachian mountains.
Terrific video. I did the hike once, in June, in the rain. Perhaps 80% of the way up, the rain became a thunderstorm. Within minutes the lightning was so intense - and seemingly so near - that we dropped our trekking poles, walked another 50 yards, squatted down and waited in the rain. It eventually passed, and we walked on, reaching the lodge, totally socked in. Looking at what I missed, I want to badly to go back.
we hiked up a few years back in late november. it was pretty cold with lots of snow. made it up and down in 5 hours. wonderful hike, i hope to do it every year now.
Thanks for this video. I'm from New Orleans and have never been 10 feet above sea level. I came to the Gatlinburg this week 6/5/09 for the first time. I hiked the short 2.5 mile round trip to Laurel Falls with the wife and kids. Very easy hike. After seeing your video, I plan to hike the round trip to Mt. Laconte on my next trip. Thanks for the peek !
MEPIERCY--This is CaptainScott2--I'm the guy that's been in touch with you to see if the "LeConte at 92" video is available. When we last spoke, you were waiting on a relative, I believe?? Have you had any luck??? Thanks....
I hiked DOWN this trail from the lodge about 30 years ago as a 10-year old. Our group of four or five friends and our dads hiked to the lodge on a different trail the day before and spent the night in the cabins. After dinner, my friends and I were chased by a black bear whose cub was crying up in a tree. We naively walked too close and the mother chased us back up the trail. That trip is one of my most vivid memories of childhood. I hope to hike Mt. LeConte again. Thanks for sharing.
@SmokyMtnsHiker hell dude I got rushed by a young bear (still probably 200-300 lbs) that wanted my candy bar. I was like 10 yrs old and threw down my snickers and ran in the cabin. It ate the wrapper and all lol. They say don't feed the bears, but I was thinking better the snickers than myself.
Thanks for posting this video! I am doing this exact hike this coming weekend. It was a great preview. Any chance you will be posting more hikes??????

My late husband, Guy Piercy, Jr., was the producer/director on this GPTV project. He was a native of TN and truely loved the Smokies.
