My miniature schnauzer, Diesel, has parvo. He has went through this for a few days now. He is currently resting, but hes groaning in pain and breathing hard. He seems to be asleep, but wont move any part of his body. We have gave him sub q ringers fluid injections, pedialyte, and gave him some soft sore-stomach-friendly foods, but he is still in bad condition. To be such a wonderfully loved family dog, we dont want to lose him. Thank you, Doctor Sam, for your wise words. You've given us hope.
Our vet told us that our puppy was parvo-free but he has been getting even worse so when we went in again today it turned out he did have parvo. We think it may have been caused by the animal control center where he was being held in so he could get neutered. He was perfectly fine up until then.
@WalkersWonderland Parvo tests usually come up negative during early stages. It is best you get your ve tot treat him as soon as possible, if you havent done so already. You have my prayers.
I had a little puppy. he was only 4 months. He go the parvo disease. at first I thought he was just plain old sick. But when i took him into the vet he was seizing and they had to put him down. Im posting this on YouTube because i want to show that not all dog can get lucky

@TheJude02 we use pedialyte. The main point is that the fluids should be mildly hypotonic (like a molarity of 200 milliosmoles) and not hypertonic (ex. gatorade). Merci!

I sure learned my lesson when i got my first dog, an Australian shepherd. didnt think about getting him vaccinated and he got the disease & i was told by the vet that he would die within 3 days, the pup gave up all hope & found himself a comfy place to die in my lawn but some quesadillas & a late parvo vaccine & pills for vomiting did the trick, i later found under a chair all the pills i had given him every time i fed him, 4 yrs hav past and he is living strong and healthy. what a wonder dog
My puppy was fully vaccinated and was already 8 months old when she got parvo. Not severe but she got the diesease. This Dr. is wrong with my proven case. Your dog and still get Parvo even if it's fully vaccinated. It's rare but it can still happen.
@pookbone1 well he didn't completely lie, he said it depends on the dogs immune system. That's how it works with ALL the vaccines, even for humans, its never 100%. It always depends on the immune system.
@zeppelin5000 yeah... mine has it.. not severe, I took him early... I've learned it's better to pay a couple hundred in vet visits to keep him up to date, than 6 to 8 hundred to treat it.
I don't want to be rude but I don't understand why people buy pets when they can't afford basic vaccines and regular visits to the vet... animals have a lot more needs than just water and cheap food from the grocery store.. :(
@BUDDHAMANE I'm not a vet... so i don't know.. but after giving my dog two shots from tractor supply with no prevention (he got parvo) and the vet telling me it's probably not the best quality of shot (yes, he could have been convincing me to spend money with him), I'm willing to bet the vet is a better way to go. Actually the vet i visit now has "take home" shots available that are about the same price as those I used to buy (cheap).. this way, your also ensuring a quality vaccine..
@metalmonkey88 both my pups got it a few moths ago between the both 2 weeks in the vet dissinfecting the house and yard and a 3 stack vet bill both my dogs are 100 percent in full effect and terrorizing my yard i love my lil shits who aint so lil n e more....lmao
please help me with advice...i have a 6month pitbull...she has 5 days with diarrhea ...i think it is parvo b/c hes diarrhea has blood,..and it stinks really bad...like death...but she has no vomit...i've giving her pedialyte i got her from a stranger...for free...and they said she had all her shots...i can't afford to take her to the vet..she looks normal...she eats and drinks...how long does the parvo virus get cured at home care...
Researching my sisters dog symptoms, it turned out she had parvovirus. My sister nor I where able to pay for the treatment. So we tried keeping the pup hydrated with water and because we didn’t have pedialite that night we did go with Gatorade. That night I volunteered to give the pup 2ml of Gatorade/hr, the next morning she was doing so much better and she was able to drink on her own. I cooked canned food for her after that and she recovered. Why did she really pull through?Itruly had lost hope
well i have 2 puppies and there both about 5 months and one it looks like it has parvo but he seems fine at first butthen sick later by the day i gave him some petiralite and 2day is the second day like this and my other puppy i gave him the first vacine shot today and hes good and all is there a risk my puppy my get parvo too..please comment back
My little schnauzer is gonna be 4 months she got parvo on saturday and She had all her shots already i didn't know was parvo till I took her to the vet on monday but since she didn't wNna eat or drink on Saturday I start giving her water and reponse liquid so she haven't lose so much weigh and haven't throw up so that's good well today is Wednesday my question is .. She have diarrea but is like water is thAt ok o and her gum is pink already but she still
My dog has parvo right now, his name is Balon the treatment is costing me about $16.00 each vet visit (i live in Mexicali Mexico) I took my dog for his second visit this morning and got more fluids via iv and some shots. The doctor told me to let the fluid finish (more likely tomorrow morning) and let the dog rest. Try to give him baby food (Gerber) and water and see his reaction. I'm taking Balon to the vet first think Saturday morning. And I'm with you on that is time consuming, and messy
thanks for the info my dog had to be put to sleep because of parvo i am sad it was today thank you for letting people know about that damn parvo virus
@doghealthproblems my dog had puppies around 6-7 week ago and 1 of them died 2 day's ago 1 of the male one's had a diaria and there was blood in it but they all seem fine apart from the bitch she is weak she has diaria but she doesent seem to be being sick or she doesent have blood in her diaria but she can not eat much , what sould i do they have not had any injection's , please reply asap
@doghealthproblems its to late it had to get put down , they sed its your choice you take it or we will put it to sleep so i sed i will take it hope and give it a chance and then they sed ok we will just check the blood and the blood cell's was somthing like 15 when it should of been 50 and they sed if you took it home you will go court for animal crulety or somthing like that , she was in a bad state thow her gum's and tong was white (not good) :(
Typically, when a dog recovers from parvo, they return to normal function within a week or two and they now have full immunity to parvo (ie they won't catch it again).
My Fiance found a puppy outside her clinic that tested positive for Parvo. We treated the puppy at home. The poor fella could not stand or move, he was barely alive.
We gave him pedialite, an IV and various medications for vomit, antibiotics and pain. One week later he was up and walking, two weeks he is running around the garden like a regular puppy.
We have called him Victor as he was victorious and although we planned to put him up for adoption, we're not so sure thats going to happen.
R.I.P Oax Jr died on Tuesday Oct 13, 2009 between 5:00 pm and 6:19 pm we miss you .. 3 month apbt really smart dog we thought u was gonna make ;( ;( ;(
It is of much debate of whether to feed any kind of food; I personally would stick just to pedialyte. The concern is that food will not be absorbed anyway and that it will act like a sponge to remove even more fluids from the bloodstream across the diseased intestinal wall. Pedialyte is hypoosmolar so it will be absorbed better; for other readers, definitely don't use gatorade. Let us all know how it turns out. Thanks, Sam
Well first of all i wana thank you for taking time to give me this advice..... I have been feeding him regular dog food liquified with pedialyte..... is this ok to do or do you recommend a different type of food....?? And if he throws up do i immediatly give him some more food or fluids???
You should hand-feed the pedialyte with a spoon but do not force feed. Feed him such that the fluid can spill out of his mouth rather than go down his throat the wrong way. Parvo dogs can be so out of it that you can easily cause an aspiration pneumonia. Also, let him sleep just make sure that he moves position every few hours. Usually parvo takes a five day course and then several days to recuperate afterwards.
i have a puppy that is about 9 weeks old...... he got his parvo shot about a week ago and now he has parvo...... i am giving him pedialite by force.. he has 3 days with the symptoms.. my questions are. Do i force feed him also???? Do i let him sleep all day or keep him awake??? If he does make it how long will it take for him to be back to normal??
First of all, let me say how sorry I am about your puppy. With puppies, a complete series of boosters are given which includes the parvo vaccine at each booster. We booster our puppies from 6-8 weeks of age with a vaccine that contains parvo protection every 3 weeks until they are 16 weeks of age. A puppy is not truly protected against parvovirus until has received all of these boosters. In other words, the first shot is not enough. I hope that answers your question well. Thanks,Sam
I have a question... I took my puppy to get his first parvovirus shot... a week later the vet said he had parvo and later died....... how was this possible??????
To get complete immunity for the first year of life, a puppy is not protected from parvo until it has had several boosters between 6 weeks and 16 weeks of age.
@TexazRidaz your dog had parvo before you gave it its shot. in your case you gave your dog parvo wich is the shot.. he had no immunity so he couldnt fight back..

Hi Dr Sam I have a 4 month old female Husky who had C5(full) vaccinations a month ago.
The only vaccination left for Parvo is the booster to which I was going to get this week.
However she has been down for the last 2 days and Today the vet has informed me that she has Parvo and I cant see her due to quarantine.
Could've the vaccine caused this?

@zeppelin5000 yeah... mine has it.. not severe, I took him early... I've learned it's better to pay a couple hundred in vet visits to keep him up to date, than 6 to 8 hundred to treat it.

I don't want to be rude but I don't understand why people buy pets when they can't afford basic vaccines and regular visits to the vet... animals have a lot more needs than just water and cheap food from the grocery store.. :(

is the 7 in 1 shop i could buy @ a feed store or coop equal to the vaccine from the vet ???
BUDDHAMANE 1 year ago
@BUDDHAMANE I'm not a vet... so i don't know.. but after giving my dog two shots from tractor supply with no prevention (he got parvo) and the vet telling me it's probably not the best quality of shot (yes, he could have been convincing me to spend money with him), I'm willing to bet the vet is a better way to go. Actually the vet i visit now has "take home" shots available that are about the same price as those I used to buy (cheap).. this way, your also ensuring a quality vaccine..

I would recommend getting them vaccinated against Parvovirus; usually I start the puppy vaccine series at 608 weeks of age.

Question, if a dog gets parvo, and makes it through, isent it true that their immune system is down if the dog is at least 6 months?
hankeybillfred 2 years ago

EumelioOrtizZaragoza 2 years ago

EumelioOrtizZaragoza 2 years ago

TexazRidaz 2 years ago
To get complete immunity for the first year of life, a puppy is not protected from parvo until it has had several boosters between 6 weeks and 16 weeks of age.
doghealthproblems 1 year ago
@TexazRidaz your dog had parvo before you gave it its shot. in your case you gave your dog parvo wich is the shot.. he had no immunity so he couldnt fight back..
