"A Quick One" is about how Ivor the engine driver sexually abuses a child in his care?? Christ... since WHEN Pete?? It was always explained as a woman who's man is away and how Ivor takes advantage of her loneliness and "comforts" her until he returns.
@cranie4 That's always been what I thought it was about. 45 of years of having the LP and I've never seen any link to children. Mind you, since when has 'Tommy' been an opera?
For those of you who accuse the interviewer lacking excitement, what do you expect?
Pete's discussing how the sexual abuse he suffered as a child affected the evolution of "Tommy". Should the interviewer be chiming in every 30 seconds, "what a wonderful story"?
Cheers Euchrid. For the record I go out Monday's, Friday's and Sunday lunch. So if any more nonsense flows after my "drink" days please ignore...I love life and people!
You guys are interpreting Pete's lyrics MUCH too literally.
His song cycles often leave out huge gaps, either by design or a simple failure to complete a story properly. These gaps allow for Pete to pontificate and fill the holes in the story with whatever thoughts happen to be sparking in his brain at the given moment.
So it's fairly easy to Pete to go back to something like "A Quick One" and find traces of his own childhood abuse in it.
Now wait a minute... I though that "A Quick One While He's Away" was about a woman having extramartial sex with an engine driver while her husband is away. Not about an engine driver abusing a child! What gives?!
I thought the same thing when he said that. I'm assuming that he probably got the story mixed up, because The Who haven't performed that piece since the 70's.
To Mark321123...I heard that too. I reread the lyrics and the last couple verses where the loved one returns and now the female is "safe" and then confesses "affair" using such childlike words such as sitting on a lap and taking a nap...IDK. It could be operating on another level. Breaks your heart...being left alone with dirty old engine drivers and the adult assuring the child that she's "forgiven" :(
But if that's the case, why would the adult tell the little girl about HIS relationships? I thought he found out about her having an affair and then he confessed that he too did some stuff and so they forgive each other.
See I didn't get that the returning person had any other relationships...but, again I'd have to reread.
Another thing I read on another site is the allusion to "girl guide" which is the equivalent to the US girl scout. And then when "ivor" offers the little girl a "sweet" it brings to mind luring a child with candy. But maybe Pete is just screwing with us LOL!
(excuse my English)The one that was away(her man) does not say anything about having relationships with others while he has been away.
The interesting thing is that She is being referred to as the "little girl" throughout the song. And as "amoyer" said she is speaking in a childlike manner when she confesses. Great song anyway!
that was funny! thanks for telling me. let us know if you get your hands on any other worthy musicians-id love to watch the results. once again-you did a fantastic job!!
god the interviewer doesnt blink, and probably dribbles...but he's clever and thats why pete talks so long...or does he just do that anyway? (sorry pete, i love ya)

I found Petes interview very interesting but seeing as everyone wants to talk about the interviewer i think he looks vaguely like Ben Stiller
