golfshopbob-thanks for post. At the risk of sounding ignorant, what does BUFF stand for? Also is there any book that you would recommend to give the reader a true sense of the demands of excellence and urgency associated with SAC with some technical details?
As a retired MSgt, I was with SAC my entire 25 year duty from 1962 to 1988. I was with 494thBW, then with ORI Team, lst Combat Eval Group, based out of Offutt AFB HQ SAC. This video is the best I have ever seen and depicts the extreme pressure all BUFF Crews, both Air and Ground....long may the USAF live and BUFF fly its ever present guard.
My Grandfather helped design the SAC patch I don't know what part of it but I can't ask him now because he's been dead for 15 years and I'm 14 so it doesn't work that way his name was Robert Elledge.
And Before someone reams me for my responce, I know they are not arround anymore, but the men and women of the USAF are still THE BEST AIR FORCE IN THE WORLD, AHNDS DOWN
if there had been ICBMs in that time, and with all that procedures and protocols, nukes would have been raining over them before the first B-52 had reached the runway
SAC and NORAD had apx. 20 minuts before ICBM's came over the north pole, 7 minuts for soviet SLBM's. The President had 10 to make the decision to launch or not. Launch took about 2 minuts. B-52's were on the "alert pad" (it looks like a christmas tree of roads for easy takeoff procedures.) BUFF's were in the air in 2:00. How do I know this? My father was aircraft mantinace, then assigned to SAC for the last few years it existed. They Drilled ALL THE TIME. THEY WERE DAMN GOOD, AND STILL ARE...
My grandpa was a crew chief in SAC and they ran a tight ship on that. Our base always has planes on alert and it still amazes me how quickly they can get those birds in the air.
It's amazing how much larger the old command center is, then the new one is. Technology has really come along way, to allow the new command center to be the size of a typical movie theater. I'm just glad I had the opportunity to visit it. Since 9/11 no public tours.
I would not want to be standing in front of one while they where moving! It's to bad they sealed up the old command center. They should of kept one camera for the SAC museum.
as an old SAC KC-135 crew chief, SAC moto was Peace is our profession, war is just a hobby

My Dad was part of SAC for 23 years and flew for 17 years in it. I was so proud of him for his military career. Protecting the US skies from Russia.

Great to see a collection about SAC and the old days of "we never sleep, so you can"... wasn't there an ad on TV for that?

I was stationed at PAFB SAC, NY from 69 to 73. This film is correct in depicting the Strategic Air Comand.

Based on the RCA color TV cameras with auto-focus, this footage probably goes back to around 1962/63.

This video looks like it was from the EARLY to MID 1950s, before there were many, if any, Soviet ICBMs.
ICBMs probably did not become a major threat until the LATE 1950s and EARLY 1960s.

Looks like some of the SAC airborne footage was used in Dr. Strangelove.

an important tool during the cold war and, like many institutions of that era, increasingly obsolete...
