What happened to the Oscars? It held such dignity, poise and relevance... how did it redce to this? I hope Billy Crystal can revive this year's award, but maybe it'll only be realized if the nominees held such reflection.
"Thank you very much for my 'Oscar' and I hope in the future I'd be worthy of it," is the most graceful thank you speech ever. You, Ms. Bergman, were worthy of all your three "Oscars" and you deserved many, many more.
She was one of those rare people who possess a great inner beauty as well as remarkable outer beauty. "Casablanca," "Notorious," and of course "Gaslight" are three of my favorite films.
She's one of my favorite actresses, and obviously a favorite of many others as well. She wasn't just a star-- she really could ACT! The scene towards at the end of the film where she finally confronts her husband was worth an Oscar just by itself. She was simply superb (not only in "Gaslight", but in everything she did) and the most deserving of all her Oscars--definately one of those rare times Oscar actually gets it right!
I remember seeing "GasLight" on TV as a child and somehow during the movie, I was drawn into her world and she made me believe that she was going crazy. I still try to catch it on TCM when they show it. It's a classic. There will never be another Ingrid Bergman. Such a beautiful and gracious lady.
How many people in Hollywood would do that now? I refuse to watch current movies. Ingrid Bergman is my favorite actress and deserved the Oscar for Gaslight. I just finished watching it.
Talk about tough competition! Ingrid is so gracious in this clip, and no matter who really deserved the award that year, you can't complain with such a beautifully humble winner (not to mention extremely talented).
@pegleg747 Perfect comment, and ABSOLUTELY right on about Halle. She may have (f)lucked up on the Oscar, but she will never have what it takes to be a real actress, much less a role model of any sort, or even a human being. She will NEVER be in the same league as real actors such as Sidney Poitier, Ingrid, Bette, Liz, Vivien...or anyone with intelligence, sophistication, talent, and class.
AMEN! ! ! THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT!! NOBODY has this kind of talent anymore. This JUNK today makes me feel physically SICK! I HATE it! I only watch things from the 30s 40s and 50s. I am in show business and trying to bring back the purity and cleanliness of the 40s back into the FILTHY society of today's industry . . . GOD HELP US ALL . . . What has the word come to??????

@pegleg747 Why Halle Berry? She gave one of the most beautiful, moving, and historical Oscar speeches of all time. It certainly took the Academy long enough to award that one.
ingrid was brilliant in gaslight-i'm glad she got the oscar but looking at who she was up against-bette davis too was awesome in her movie, its one of my favs. and though i haven't seen double indemnity yet, i hear barbara was terrific in it. tough competition!
I love Bergman and she was wonderful in "Gaslight" but in retrospect, Barbara Stanwyck should have won that year for "Double Indemnity". This was a considered a consolation prize for Bergman for having lost out to Jennifer Jones the year before.

the clip is a different take than what is used in the film...or is that just my imagination?

@MaxxUS08 Your Right. The clip in this video is from the trailer, which uses a different take used in the movie. :-)

@CliffmountPictures I prefer the Oscar take here to the one used in the film.

Not TV, I think. Probably filmed for Movietone News which was shown in theatres.

God why can't more present day actors have the class and humility as many of our past screen legends??
I see people like Halle Berry and just cringe...

LOL! Ingrid was REAL shy. She looked like if she could find the nearest exit, she would have.
She gave an excellent performance in GASLIGHT. And she was up against some tough competition.
Even Barbara Stanwyck was a gracious loser. I once read that she was happy that her favorite actress had won.
