  • A rare gem of an even rarer recording! Jane Cassidy sings as a bird. Another legend in song associated with Slemish Mountain's rich and ancient history.

A man..Henry Joy McCracken..a man who laid his life down for his beliefs and the fair maiden he left behind. Love indeed transcends life's fate and endures forever.

    Thank you for posting!

  • Thanks for the comment KatradionNY.

  • @lorgain2 anywhere is this album or an updatedd copy available?

  • I heard Jane get a mention on Radio Ulster a few weeks ago, I think it was something to do with a folk music event in Belfast.

I agree the singer and the song are well matched very good, thanks for your comment.

  • A lyrically beautiful & well written song with a strong message.

Jane's voice is just astounding! I bought two of her LPs when I was in England in the 1970s at a record shop.

I have not heard anything about her for many years & wondering if she is still recording & if she has any CDs? I don't know if there are other albums? Any information about Jane would be appreciated.

I think her voice is so lovely & yet few people seem to know about her music.

Thank you very much for posting this song.

  • Thanks Ard and B Mac, this song waas sadly neglected during the 1960s folk revival, as you say a great song.

  • great version of a great song about a great man

  • It was on the Belfast mountains I heard a maid complain

And she vexed the sweet June evening with her heart-broken strain,

Saying "Woe is me, life's anguish is more than I can dree,

Since Henry Joy McCracken died on the gallows tree.

I'm always struck by how beautifully poetic some of these old Irish songs are. Thanks so much for posting. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • Henry Joy McCracken one of the northern leaders of the 1798 rebellion, hanged in Belfast for his part in the rebellion.

  • This song is really Henry Joy although mostly referred to as The Belfast Mountains.

Jane Cassidy is in fine voice, a lovely song very rarely heard. Thanks Machree.

  • Jane is great at singing it. thanks for posting it.
