I don't see what the big deal is. If someone called me saying I owed money, I would just laugh at them and say I didn't buy it, so im not paying for it. Its the stores problem for taking the money
When the fake Carol was getting the apartment and had to provided references that though she was Carol Anderson... Were they real references of the real Carol Anderson, if that were the case, wouldn't they have contacted Carol reguarding it... if they were the fake Carol Anderson's people they should been contacted about how they knew here and her whereabouts...
@SHAUNERDANIEL Many times, when you provide a reference on an application for a job or an apartment, they check your references but your references don't contact you to talk about it, especially if it's someone you know. I've provided references before and they were close to me, and they never brought it up to me.
The apartment was in CA and the real Carol Anderson, lives in Virginia. If, I was a reference and received a phone call from apartment managment in CA. I was asked if I knew "Jane Doe" and I know Jane lives in Virginia. I would be calling Jane asking her about the move.
I have a feeling Carol Anderson was using the cards herself, or perhaps had a friend do so on her behalf, and then getting the money back. It has all the earmarks of a hoax.
Boy, I'd be so angry if someone did that to me. Wowsers. Wtf. After all the shit I'm going through to fix my credit, and someone went along and fucked it up. Lol, there'd be hell to pay.
@SHAUNERDANIEL unfortuneately, really simple. Social engineer by phone, or she was in the area at one time and went dumpster diving.
It angers me how often I use my card and not a single person asks me for my ID. How do they know that card is mine? over 80% fraud is accomplished by corrupt or simply lazy employees of banks or merchants
It is cases like this one that have caused me to shred every single thing that has my name on it. And I am still hesitant to use my credit card for online purchases.
even though this crime has happened 20 years ago, everyone still has to learn this lesson. and also, I thought victims of that type of crime wouldn't show their face on TV, but Carol Anderson was very brave.
Criminals like this should be executed...in many ways identity theft is the most sadistic and cold-blooded type of crime. This woman in particular deserves the needle.
They really get very little prison time. i have never understood it. I guess it's because it's considered white collar crime and there are a lot of "elite" businessmen who would get life in prison if the laws were just.
Really appreciate this! Brings back eerie memories of being of hearing that scary music, and yet being totally mesmerized by how interesting the segments were.

Why does practically every "Unsolved Mysteries" criminal case seem to have happened in 1992?

This is a weird one to watch because identity theft is so common today, yet back then it was almost unheard of.

Reminds me of the movie called "Identify Theft: The Michelle Brown Story" which aired on Lifetime.

Of course the collection goons have no accomodation for victims of ID fraud. Never did then, never did now. Welcome to the police state.
