"Guts, training and a little bit of luck." Yeah, like it should have stayed... Fire and forget missiles have all but taken almost all of the skill out of aerial combat.
There is no need to be an ace pilot, or even a simple pilot, to understand pure logic, damaged plane = loss of power = loss of speed and/or manoeuvrability, it's as simple as that.
According to the narrator, the german airplane was leaving a trail of black smoke, one can imagine on fire and thus loosing power/airspeed. So in a valley, near the ground banking left or right or trying to climb would have meant loosing even more power/speed and thus a risk of stalling.
In that situation no pilot would have wanted to offer an even huger targer to two P51's in his six.
One wonders why people with no knowledge of flying cares to watch and posts comments about things they do not know about, just like andromedar just did.
why doesnt radar lock on near the jungle ground? im guessing too many objects get picked up by the radar and its impossible to distinguish plane from tree?
@Azamspazam91 Early radars couldn´t tell the difference between the clutter from the ground and the enemy aircraft. I think the Navy F-4J was the first aircraft capable to "look-down shoot-down" thanks to an AN/AWG-10 Fire Control System.
@Azamspazam91 That depends on the technology gap between the aircraft. A modern aircraft have enough countermeasures to make a BVR missile kill at least difficult. Off course not many countries have such technology.
So, where are the J79 smoke trails? The black smoke at military power is a trademark of the F-4. It doesn't show much in afterburner, but guzzles the fuel down. The F-4 was big enough all alone, without adding a black trail behind it as well. A lot of F-4 drivers learned to put one engine in idle, one in afterburner when turning hard, to get the same power as both J79's on full military, but without the smoke. Also, he fired a couple of AIM-9's already, so why is there 4 still on his plane?
WTF...isn't that MiG-17 making some preeeetty tight turns there, even for a maneuverable plane? I don't think the -17 could turn like that, back and forth forever. Maybe once or twice near GLOC....but a body can only take so many Gee's without blacking out. Maybe the North Vietnamese were less susceptible to GLOC than US pilots? LOL.
@justforever96 They could probably do it at that speed, but then again, the Mig 17 had no hydraulic assist like our fighters did. They could do some bad ass turns at speed if they had to, assuming the pilot was in that good of a physical condition.
@superdonkeyballs Superior technology like what the Americans and Israelis have is what deters Soviet-equipped scum from trying anything in the first place. That's why dogfights have been getting increasingly rare. Peace.
Old os Olds, he been there done that before in WWII, i fuess he see no problem with goíng down to tree top level. I guess he is more worried about those new missiles DOD contractors have thought up ......

He actually had 4 choices at the end. He could have gone around the ridge line. There was enough space between him and the ridge.
