Agree, look how well crafted Bill's bit was on the baby on the airline. It was witty and invited you into the joke because it was so well written and had a huge twist at the end. The idea that two comedians would discuss the same major pop culture event in their stand-ups is hardly proof that one of them is "stealing" from the other. That's like saying Hicks, Carlin and Pryor all stole from Lenny Bruce because they make jokes about race, sex and religion.

I can understand the furor here and the similarities are obvious, but Denis can come up with his own material too. Remember Lock n' Load? Hicks was more of a serious social commentator than anything (I know where to go if I want to be preached to). Denis is way funnier and all around better performer than Bill IMO. Bill was a Sad Man.

I always liked Denis Leary in Rescue Me and The Job, but had never seen any of his earlier stand-up. I hadn't heard of Bill Hicks, till about a year ago.
Watching all these comparison videos, I have to say Hicks is amazing, I don't know how I missed him, when he was around. Leary clearly stole from him , and very poorly at that. Leary comes off as juvenile, amateurish and decidedly unfunny.
I'm actually embarrassed for him.

I'm pretty young, I knew about Leary before Hicks, and I never found Leary funny. When I discovered Hicks, I was brought to tears, and still am sometimes.
Listening to Leary, he sounds embarrassed, pissed at himself, knowing exactly what he's doing. Like he can't believe he's getting away with it.
Hicks is always either thrilled by himself, or bored from repeating the same jokes all the time.

I honestly had never seen Denis Leary before, (I lived through the era, but had only heard him--- sounded like the annoying drunken jackass who's at the party, and isn't funny but won't shut up, the guy who finds the room emptying as he arrives) Lo and behold he is!! he's infinitely more annoying when you have to watch him. Hicks is certainly one of the great stand-ups of all time (he's right under Carlin, but hey, nobody can equal Carlin) and it is very difficult to argue Leary did not rip off Hicks. I like Leary on Rescue me, but he will never be the social commentator that Hicks was. That being said, I am really tired of Tool fans(and I like Tool) telling me how great Hicks was, even though they never heard his stand up, because he was mentioned in some liner notes. AAGGH!

sitting here watching this I get really into the Bill Hicks bits, have been LOL'ing- he just has to do a 'look' to emphasise a point and it's brilliantly done. Then it cuts to Leary and it's the kind of TV that has you cringing into your seat.
