  • To be fair, perspective can play a role in how much you like a stylized cover. I actually had never heard the original version until I searched for it after hearing Sonos's version. But by then, I was acquainted well enough with the cover, that now I think the Jackson 5 version sounds "wrong." It seems too upbeat and peppy compared to Sonos, and doesn't really work with a child-like voice on it.

  • I thought the last part where they looked over their shoulder was genius.

  • They brought the 70's up to the 90's....and it was awesome. :)

  • While original, this arrangement takes every last shred of fun out of the song.

  • @ClandestineSnowman I agree. This is not a song well-served by the dark spin they've given it.

  • I love this arrangement. It's so original.

  • I think this is a great accapella interpretation of this song. Michaels screechy voice used to somewhat annoy me, so it is refreshing to hear it without the motown sound.

  • Was this the guilty pleasure performance?

  • @chitwn9891 No it wasn't. If they made it to guilty pleasure week, they would've sang Video Killed The Radio Star, but Pentatonix did that in honor of Sonos who went home.

  • @SuperSoccerguy23 AH right, i knew i was forgetting an important fact.

  • I would like them a lot if they didn't sound so empty. I kinda ruined my standards when I listened to Pentatonix because I expect a five person group to be better. It's probably because there are so many females!

  • Yeah they changed the song a bunch, but it sounded perfect to me. I think the biggest mistake of this season was sending them home.

  • I just rewatched a few of the episodes from the beginning of the season. I just can't see why the judges were giving them such harsh criticism. Anyway, were the rules that they had to make a cover? Or remix? The rules seemed pretty lenient especially with song choices for the Current Hits....I mean, Ignition was 2002-2003ish. I forgot what my point was. .-.

  • The reason they got kicked off wasn't because this arrangement wasn't good. The reason is that in 3 songs, they showed absolutely no flexibility in three songs. They made everything sound a thousand times more angsty than it needed to be. I don't think it's possible, based on what I heard on the show, for them to do anything remotely upbeat or happy. At least The Collective was more than a one-trick pony.

  • I couldn't disagree with the judges more! I thought the arrangement made it fresh and current. Sure, the J5 were awesome (40 yrs ago) but most of today's viewers have never heard of them or their songs. Sounds crazy, I know, but its true. This remix is keeping the song alive for current and future fans. Like anything else, they'll search for this version and end up finding the original and, who knows, maybe they'll like it too.

  • @heathsfavs If you think many of today's viewers have never even heard of J5 then you are seriously out of touch. I suppose you think we have never heard of the Beatles or Elvis either, right? How ridiculous. The J5 are played on the radio all the time still.

  • @xlmeay All the time? Really? I haven't heard a J5 song on the radio in 20yrs, no kidding. My previous comment may have sounded ignorant, but I based that on the teenagers and 20-somethings I know. They are surprised to find out that a lot of the songs they love are actually covers. It may be different where your from.

  • @heathsfavs Ya, I live in the American Southwest, have been in numerous states around here, and I always hear classic bands on the radio. I am 19. Granted, you have to get onto radio stations that play music from 30-40 years ago. Obviously radio stations known for hip-hop or rap styles of music won't be playing J5. I am honestly shocked to hear that there are people my age that have not heard of these groups.

  • This performance was much better than they gave them credit for... one of my favorites of the night.

  • I just watched the clip of Voices of Lee singing "Man in the Mirror." In order to get a good comment from Sean after singing a Michael Jackson song, you better sound like Michael. -.-

  • Why is a group like Sonos even on this hack show? They're way to good. Saw them live last year and they are awesome. The judges on this show have no taste but they sure like to hear themselves talk.

  • Okay think this was great I just they should have stayed more true to the original.

  • this sounds so much better with pedals

  • the only reason everybody was pissin and moanin was because it was a michael jackson song . the arrangement was wonderful and if you didnt know that wasnt a michael jackson song you wouldnt have never known . thankyou sonos for being original fuck anybody else if they couldnt understand that . you guys should have stuck around @ least three more weeks after that hands down than the competition really would have been 1. and how the hell they let you guys go before the collective & urban method bs

  • I hate Shawn's first sentence. I love him, but he sounds like a whiny kid.

  • I love this, and we all know Sara loved it too. Go check out her cover of 'single ladies'. she's got the same mind set.

  • great voices, but a defilement of a classic

  • @DanielMurphy69 . no it wasnt they took michael jacksons song and put it in a whole nother genre. but you probaly not neing an entertainer and a mere consumer wouldnt have recognized that. people like you with no knowledge and instead of creating music , will more than likely follow a trend instead of setting 1. henceforth all the reasons why music is bullshit now we as a nation stopped 4 real creative expression to appeal to the dumb masses. and $ of course

  • @dntkillthemessenger well, mr expert, they DID put it in a different genre. I may not be an expert, but im in an a capella group in my high school and i can recognize when the song is completley changed. There are many preformances on this show where the song is done completley differently and ive liked it very much. all im saying is that when you take a classic and completly turn it around, its dangerous and here, it really didnt work. hence why they got eliminted on that episode

  • @DanielMurphy69 this arrangement (or, at least, the very basics of it) has been in SONOS' repertoire for a long time, and to say the show producers and everyone didn't see this coming would be a lie. The Judges said what they had to say to let SONOS go. There was never a question of SONOS winning, it wasn't going to happen. They were here for exposure.

  • I didn't like this group at all. They should have made it up beat, you want your audience to dance and have fun with this song not just leave it AWOL. I guess I also expected the MAIN beginning of the song. Great voices but a bad rendition.

  • @Kino0726 Grown people shouldn't interpret a song the way a preteen pop group did. Why even listen to a cover if they merely copy the original? If no one reinterprets the songs they sing, then it's nothing more than karaoke; exactly why I never liked Am. Idol. I want to hear people sing at their best instead of stumbling to sing styles that may sell records. This show initially encouraged that originality, but is starting to go towards the same pitiful direction as the rest of them.

  • I understand what the judges were saying about it straying to far from the original, and not really being recognizable as the same song, but i don't see that as an issue. It gave the song a different meaning without changing the lyrics. It really allowed me to better understand the song.

  • why did the judges not like this?

  • These guys are some of the most brilliant musicians I have ever met, but who the fuck picked out the outfits?

  • the judges didn't get it. this arrangement was genius. i'm sad they went home D:

  • If i forget about the jackson 5 version, this would be a great song version. But I can't. I get what shawn says about it leaving people unsatisfied. I still like it though.

  • I completely agree with Sara's critique on this one...I was hoping that they'd at least throw in a bit of the original vibe.

  • I can't believe the judges didn't like this!! They're always talking about 'making it your own,' and i've never seen a group do a better job of this. they made it sound like their own groove, and it was hot.

  • i can't believe they got sent home!! its totally amazing that they changed the background music...a Capella is all about innovation...so the judges saying that they wished to hear it more like the classic...they should be praised more for doing what other groups didn't...everyone else was directly from the song...sonos truly made it "sonos" instead of the jackson 5

  • I don't know what you all are talking about, this song was awful, definitely not up to their level. The lead vocals were whiny and nasally, and the whole thing just really sucked.

  • I actually have to say, vocally, that was their best performance. And normally, I love when artists put their own spin on things. But this is a Jackson Five song, and you can't change, especially I Want You Back.

  • They were the best group in the competition. It just floors me that the judges keep encouraging originality with the songs, and then blast them when they actually do it. You don't have to 'move your feet' for a song to be amazing. I don't move my feet to Johnny Cash's cover of 'Hurt' by NIN, but it's still one of the most amazing songs and covers ever.

  • I feel like this wouldn't be bad if it were original song...I actually might like it a lot. But it's not, so I hate it because you just don't mess up Michael Jackson that much.

  • @Sajere12 I'm a diehard MJ fan for life, and I really liked this I'm one that doesn't usually enjoy remixes or remakes of any song of his, and I thought this was extremely creative and well-done. They didn't "mess up" anything. They're musicians and MJ was one as well. I think he would've appreciated this. That's just my opinion.

  • @randomxxdinosaur I respect your opinion and all, and thanks for telling me about it. It's not so much that they weren't creative (because they were really creative), I just thought that it was a little too creative - it took on an entirely different tone from MJ. I was expecting to hear something at least slightly similar to the original, and I was disappointed. But I think we should just agree to disagree on this.

  • I give the credit they deserve: their arrangement was bold and original, and they sound fantastic, but there's just some songs that you can't change drastically without upsetting pretty much everyone, and this is one of them.

  • I don't like this at all :S

  • at the very start of the video(0:00), i thought he said dodos

  • I really disliked this version the first time I heard it, but it grew on me. It's suck in my head now :)

  • This version is FANTASTIC!!!!!

  • the Judges, must of been on crack, because what i seen and heard was great, I think this guys&girls are great!!!

  • I saw sonos perform live about a week ago, and this song was fucking amazing. Their entire show was amazing. Getting eliminated because of this song is a joke.

  • boring never will make it

  • These guys have the best percussion but they need another male singer to do the bass

  • It actually uses a lot of 60's era minor jazz chord dissonances, which is typical of this era, I thought is was great too!

  • Bought It On iTunes!! I Like this version WAY more then the Original!!

This was the First performance i seen EVER of the Sing Off!!

  • If you were supposed to stay strictly faithful to the original, then Marvin Gaye would have never covered 'Heard it through the grapevine.'

But i think all of the groups were pretty good. The only one that was far weaker than Sonos was those kids from UDel, and there are out now, anyway.

  • Judges scored based on their preconceptions of what it should have sounded like rather than judging the arraignment and the performance on it's merits. Horrible decision has damaged the rest of the season by removing a top tier team from contention. Boo.

  • Won't you save me back in your heart. Not catchy at all, sounds so bad.

  • @ejdacanay Some people are above just making "catchy" tunes, and actually making music.

  • I really loved this version!!! Forget about Shawn and Ben's opinion. This song was suppose to be modern not the 70s version, damn it!!! I didn't want that classic melody.

  • @FreakNationCrew First rule of doing a cover: Don't try to copy the original.

  • @supersingerevan First rule of doing a cover: Don't change it to the point where the song isn't recognized or the actual message in the song is destroyed.

  • @Kino0726 First of all, the song can still be recognized by quite a few factors, including some main melodies, and the lyrics used. Second, a song doesn't have to have a single message. Sonos looked at the lyrics and derived a different emotion and story from it. It's done all the time by musicians, and is a very powerful technique that, in my opinion, Sonos pulled off masterfully.

  • @supersingerevan actually the point of a cover is to perform the original song as well as you can to show your voice or whatever you're trying to show. what they did here is a remix, where you make a defined change in the beat or the lyrics.

  • @chickennoodlesoup901 I could get behind that point. To be fair though, the commenter I replied to said "First rule of doing a remix", so your point still gets across my sentiment.

  • @supersingerevan but the second rule is that you don't change a classic.

  • @trophymursky @trophymursky Except that the opposite is true. Tell that to the thousands of people who have covered "Summertime". If we all sang it the same way, it would be boring as hell and no one would ever want to listen. In fact, it's the classics that you are SUPPOSED to change, because everyone's heard the original so many times. People like to hear new spins on things.

  • @supersingerevan second rule of a cover, don't fuck it up

  • @schantzman87 Well then, it's a good thing they didn't do that.

  • @FreakNationCrew If you don't change anything, it woudn't really be a remix would it?

  • I really like their arrangement and I also think this is their best song of all 3. My problem with Sonos is that I feel they are very very professional in skills, and when it comes to blend in the emotions, they didn't seem to get there. I mean, I can't find any problem with their singing skills, but I can't seem to link with them. It's sad to see them leave.

  • I agree with Shawn, I wish I would've heard that beginning groove to reassure me that this song was gonna be different but keep the original flavor. But they went like left field and made this song gloomy :( I miss Mike now LOL.

  • @Shockage Hey, how about you shut up and quit watching the video if you hate it so much? You've commented enough times, and no one really cares. You're not contributing to a conversation, just flinging random insults. GTFO.

  • @Shockage I'm not even gonna abbreviate this one. GET. THE. FUCK. OUT. You're just making an ass of yourself.

  • I have no problem with covering a song in your own style a la Committed's re-working of "This Love" last season, but even that kept recognizable pieces of the original. The problem with Sonos is that they are not an acapella group. They're a vocal band. They've got some talent, but what they were missing was an additional two male members and that was clear. I appreciate what they tried to do with the song, but the judges made the right choice.

  • I thought this was one of the most innovative performances of the whole night.

  • I have to disagree with the judges on this one... you guys remade that song into a whole new beautiful song...

  • @SamUeLFall if this had been a challenge in which they make their own 60's style song from top to bottom they would have failed miserably. But again not taking anything away from them they are talented i just missed this performance. =/

  • @SamUeLFall i can see where you are coming from like i said maybe i just did it get it but they in their defense they aren't terrible like they are really good solid singers maybe its for a different audience and it wasn't meant for me but i also felt like the task at hand was 60's and the only part of their performance that represented the 60's is the title and artist of the song that tehy were covering.

  • Shawn starts off SO pissed off. He's like, enraged.

  • This was the worst ever it really pissed me off! First of all if you are going to do Jackson 5 YOU BETTER DO IT JUSTICE! And they obviously did not first of all the arrangement was just terrible MAYBE i could just chalk it up to me "not getting it" but seriously the song is a classic LEAVE IT ALONE! Second and MOST IMPORTANTLY the original version is like a BEG I WANT YOU BACK like Michael was BEGGING in the original and here this lead singer is like ehhh i guess i want you back....no big deal

  • @DJDannyBoy3 i agree on the most part..but it's kinda hard for a kid to NOT sound like they were begging. Haha. I'm in a weird place, because I appreciate this version..but also agree with the judges in a way. But someone at the show should have told them it needed to be closer to the original. I personally think Sonos chose it TO end it. 'We're not making it, lets get all the people who get us to know what we are'

  • Honestly, I love Sonos. I love Pentatonix more..but they are friends, so it's not bad. Sonos has been recording and winning things for a long time now..they've got an underground following, and this show just added to it. Honestly, I'm not sad Sonos is gone, because who knows what Sony would have done had they won. I'm pulling for Pentatonix, and I'm sure Sonos is too. sony better not eff them up..

what happened to the other season's groups?

  • I was watching the show at a laundry mat, standing at the dryer checking my clothes, when i heard that deep moving tone. It got my attention, I had to turn around and see what I was hearing. The judge, shawn, does have me wondering what it would be like if you could have added that beginning musical arrangement from the oringinal, I Want You Back. I wish I could get a copy of this Sonos version and if that original music arrangement could be add that would be awesome.

  • @musicplayl I mean, it's on their first album. You could check it out there.

  • i really liked this. i would have slowed down or gone down a tone during the chorus, though. It would have completed the dark interpretation that I think they were going for. If they had done that, the beginning that Shawn wanted wouldn't have been needed at all.

  • @shortboypinoy And to add onto that, they dug the jazzy version of American Boy that Afroblue gave us (which I thought was also rad), but didn't dig this?

  • @shortboypinoy Because Afro-Blue stayed true to the original (and if you listened hard enough they went to the original in the middle of American Boy). They took a chance on a jazzy version of American Boy and HIT IT...this was definitely a MISS...

  • If they wanted to do this on their own album once they won the contest, that would have been fine. However, you should have enough versatility to perform in the style (60s) asked. I enjoyed their performance, although I thought they lost the entire theme of this portion of the contest.

  • I disagreed in every way with the judges on their critique of this. I thought it was very sultry and I was in love with it from minute one. Yes it was not a sixties throw back exactly but Pentatonix's version of Piece of my heart was different from the original. Now it wasn't as drastic of a difference as Sonos, but I thought this song was absolutely amazing.

  • i love this song. and them. i think they are still getting used to not using their pedals, and paul being gone and whatnot, but i think they shouldn't have gotten off. I actually cried when they got eliminated. two of them are from my hometown and i've seen their whole journey

  • i really like this performance i just think they made it closer to orginal. like if i heard this randomly i wouldnt think it was jackson 5 song. but i love the beat boxer :)

  • They were asked to do a 60s song. The least they could do was do it in a similar style to the original. Yes, when you do a cover you should inject some of yourself in there. That's what any good band or artist does. But they took a classic, tore it apart and gave us this monstrosity. Instead of showing their versatility and giving us different styles of music, they went BACK to their comfort zone of doing a more modern style song. THAT is why the judges were hard on them and why they are gone.

  • @LlamaHomefry THANK YOU. Finally someone that understands why they were eliminated!

  • @LlamaHomefry but this is a sonos classic. they've been doing it for years, ever since they first started out. I've been a fan of them from the very beginning and this is the first song i ever heard them do. The theme was 60s songs, yes, and that's what they did-- they just put their own spin on it. So, they were eliminated for being too original. And their chords sound too spread out because one of their members left the group recently to pursue acting. they're still getting used to his absence

  • @nerdsrule348 Maybe they've been doing it for years, but that's not what was asked of them for this competition. And losing a member is no excuse. You lose a member, you restructure your mix and your group. That's what professionals do! But hey, now they can do whatever they want. They can use their effects pedals and they can covers songs how they want.

  • @LlamaHomefry I'm sorry, but what's wrong with having a signature sound? So they're modern, so what? At least they know who they are. And the assignment was a song from the 60's. They did that. There was no rule about style. They took a classic song, and re-imagined it, focusing on the lyrics and how they could be interpreted. I found their rendition sexy and almost heart-wrenching. They were easily the strongest group in the bracket, both vocally and in terms of cohesiveness.

  • @supersingerevan There's nothing wrong with a signature style. Injecting yourself into a song is fine, as I've said before. Taking a famous classic song and doing some odd rendition that almost no one has heard (except for a handful of fans) and expecting everyone to like/get it is stupid. And if you knew anything about vocals and sound, you'll know that they had a pretty horrible blend. It seems they were pretty lost without their pedals. They need to learn that good vocal technique > effects.

  • @LlamaHomefry I do know a lot about vocals and sound (I won't go into it, because I find Youtube bragging ridiculous), and I completely disagree.

  • @supersingerevan So arrangement aside, you thought they didn't have any pitch issues or blend issues?

  • @LlamaHomefry Pitch issues, no. If you can point some out, go right ahead. With blend, yeah I can hear their individual voices, but with the style they're doing and the number of voices in the group, I actually prefer it that way.

  • Ouch, I was looking forward to hearing more from this group, and to get eliminated on a song I've already heard them do was very disappointing.

  • I actually think this was their best song out of the 3! I am sorry they went home because of this. It is funny the judges praised their other songs and hated this one. Last week they did talk about groups doing classics and doing too much to change them. I give them credit very nice job on this song.

  • Wow... truly a musicians' arrangement of this song. It was absolutely brilliant, but definitely too complex for the average casual listener. Keep doing what you're doing, Sonos. There ARE people who get it and appreciate it.

  • I found the rendition innovative, novel and original. Both the vocals and the performance were tight. I understand many expect to hear many of the cliches associated with the original recording, but I think there is merit in taking a tune and making it your own. It's done all the time in jazz! I would have preferred to see one of the "choir" sized groups go home, e.g. The Deltones or The Collective.

  • @Rokthewok agreed. The judges are always complaining about groups not putting there own twist on the song to make it there own. Sonos did exactly that. Although the original was a classic and was great, being to stuck to hearing the Jackson 5's version hindered the judge's interpretation of the song. The sing off is rigged! These guys should've stayed.

  • That was a disaster they completely ruined the song! I'm so glad they went home!!!

  • @webbec maybe it was easier to enjoy if you weren't familiar with the original, that way you could listen to it with an open mind. I can see how if you were expecting to hear the original hearing this would be pretty jarring but I think it stands on its own extremely well.

  • @Skyhawk02 I'm all for singers making their own versions of popular and classic songs, but most of them add in a little bit of what made the song famous and what made people love, they went way off on this! They did the same thing with Coldplay's Viva La Vida, so for that I'm glad that they're gone!

  • hm, I am not hearing any problems with these guys performance, there must be something wrong with the judges ears I am thinking?

  • @Skyhawk02 agreed
