  • Over the top

  • 13 people prefer this tune to be played via the skin flute.

  • can anyone , anyone tell me where to find this note in his version. plz plz plz

  • waow he's good!

  • Wow this man takes his music WAY to seriously! That or its a show... A song this advanced would require a lot of practice and you would think that after hours of playing this over and over some of the excitement would have worn off by now!

  • @TheGr8scott if you ever hear him live in concert you'll understand that the ultimate goal for every piece he plays is a sense of euphoria. he's amazing.

  • I want to play this piece, and i want to play like this!!!!!!!

    Love it

  • @porrada25 I am Practice this piece right now! its pretty hard! lol

  • from Jose', the Hermeterec........This performance almost tore my heart out.....the absolute genius of it! Maestro Gavrylyuk is stupendous and I am of the opinion that Bach is the greatest composer who ever walked the face of the earth.

  • This was an exemplary rendition of the piece.

  • bach un genio de la musica !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • He does a nice job on the pedal parts and the parts that are played on separate manuals. Very interesting overlapping hands technique.

  • Apparently 12 people own an organ at home.

  • If he didnt have the titel 'concert pianist' then he wouldnt act the way he does. its pathetique.

  • excelente interpretacion !!

  • somebody hacked into god's mp3 player

  • where can i find this sheet music? i have some other version, this one sounds better. excellent performance!

  • @raa4566 I've seen the sheet music for this. Its scary!

  • this is absolutely outstanding

  • Exquisite

  • Not that this isn't still phenomenal buuuttt he totally flubs it at 00:52 !!!! It's subtle, but it's there. You know, i know it, he knows it, i bet his deaf grandmother knows it.

    lol, still a great performance

  • Audacity is going crazy trying to keep up with the intensity of this piece

  • Ma a questo pianista gliel'hanno spiegata cosa sia una fuga? o pensa che non ci sia differenza con i notturni di chopin?

  • @1982mcmlxxxii Come sei severo!

  • Very well played and gavrylyuk has a beautiful touché.

  • He really sounds like he is one with the piano and music. I felt like I was brought to hell and back. He really plays all the textures of the piano.

  • The playing is beyond fantastic but i cant watch this without wanting to slap his face for totally overacting with a look of basking in his own farts on his face.......but then again if i could play my instrument as well as he plays his i'm sure i'd bask in it too

  • this guy is scary

  • He is absolutely awesome!!!

I had a chance to listen to his debut concert at the Hollywood Bowl on 9/7/10.

He played Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto #2 with the tremendous energy & skill.

Plus added Mendelsohn Wedding March for bonus.

    Bravo Alexander!!!

  • this son of a bitch didnt play the whole bass part at 7:40

  • Absolutely beautiful!

  • i like this version better than his "improved" honestly

  • this version sounds better than the improved one

  • This pianist looks like he should be an actor

  • AMazing... what a performance.

    Serieux, alexander, hallucinant....

  • ay!!!, me encanta esta obra, muchas felicidades !!!!

  • he reminds me of my old freaky piano teacher. lol

  • There is an improved edit posted on 2/19/10. You can link to it from the pop-up at the beginning of the video.

  • wow, last time i say this video it was at a better video and audio quality.

    Wonder what happened.

AND NO IT'S NOT THE SAME AS BEFORE.

  • yeah it's true I've noticed it too!!!

    I wonder what happened O_O

  • Its a piano, play it dont have sex with it!!! everyone else does just fine without caressing the keys

  • Can't stand piano actors, he plays the piece nicely but there is no excuse for what he's doing with his face and arms.

Call it emotion or whatever you like but I can guarentee you that's not how he plays the piece at home.

  • @Oliiiverr then my friend you have no emotion for anything it seems :D

  • You can have emotion without looking like you're making sweet love with the piano.

Not saying he doesn't play the piece nicely but clearly acting.

  • U're maybe right.. sometimes it just doesn't looks like natural, not like Fazil Say :p

  • Yeah it does look natural, Fazil Say is a little eccentric though.

    Can't help but like him.

  • i love playing this song. god its wonderfull. i prefer to play the beginning a bit faster than him.

  • I hope to play like this person someday. I just started playing piano again after not playing for 10 years.

  • May be. But it really does not matter if he skipped little fragment. 98% of people, who will ever watch this video will never be able to play this composition with such quality and emotion.

  • He skips an entire measure at 7:42

  • haha true I didn't notice that the first time. People shouldn't give you thumbs down for plainly telling the truth

  • @icebluemyst It's true

  • I think that if his subtext shows on his face, at least it proves it to be genuine absorbment in the aim of the music. I find this an amazing and highly engaging performance.

  • There is a massive difference between a musician and just someone who can play an instrument really well. The difference is that musicians can inject feelings and their own personal touch to pieces of music, making the music more enjoyable. If this guy has to do the stanky leg while he plays piano, then by ALL means let him do his thang! :)

  • Gavrylyk super, but organ is organ

  • All the musicians are very emotional people. For us it can be difficult to understand why he acts in such manner. Anyway, he is great musician.

  • @EvgeniySPBGPU He overdoes it imo.

  • @EvgeniySPBGPU He acts in such a manner because he is playing one of the greatest pieces of music ever written and he can feel the genius in it resonating in his mind.

  • @EvgeniySPBGPU But yea, it is a bit overdramatic.

  • @EvgeniySPBGPU Actually, he does look kinda goofy.

  • @EvgeniySPBGPU

I would say that musicians are not always emotional in the typical sense, but that they can understand music better than the average person.

  • Great piece of music, great playing, but he doesn't need to act like the phantom of the opera.

  • so is there a - in your opinion - more "appealing" transcription of this piece?

  • In the whole the ones with less notes. For example: Louis Brassin.

  • holy santa claus shit. this blew my mind as a newbie to classical. I'm absolutely amazed by the sheer emotion and drama in this. please, reccomend me more.

  • In my opinion the finest rendition of this piece is from the Baroque pipe organ from the church in Lezasjsk in Poland. The organ is an splendid art work and I wish I knew who the organist was. The acoustics give me goosepimples..

  • More masterpieces in my opinion. Violinist David Oistrakh playing Debussey's 'Clair De Lune'

AND as it's Christmas you should hear The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir sing the Hallelujah Chorus. Clap your hands and have fun.

  • I am playing all the Busoni's transcription on Bach and I keep listening all the versions I can find. This is maybe the one I like less. I find irritating the lack of sound and all the changing of time in the Fuga which is supposed to be isorythmic, There is no fight between the voices...no passion!! Where is Bach's majesty??

  • monstrous fugue

  • but its great to play like that. if you've played it you'll know how fun and rhythmic it can be!

  • isn't it??

  • How can you not get any emotions from this beautiful piece of music?!?!?

  • Well, his "body language" is a little bit annoying to me, but the music is really beautiful.

  • It's how you can tell he's a serious artiste.

  • I like this pianist's interpretation of the fugue. Very beautifully played!

  • bach is hard becauase both hands are playing something diffrent. have any of you tried to play bach? well you notice that the left hand and the right hands are playing 2 diffrent pieces. and it is EXTREMELY hard to do this. now look at this piece, you have octaves in one hand, chord in the other hand, doubles in one, octaves in the other, arpigeos in one, scales in the other. you literally need to divide your mind into 2 to be able to play these pieces.if you can play bach u can play all others

  • Actually this is Piano transcription (arrangement) by Busoni of a Bach Organ composition. If you think its hard to play on Piano, then try playing it on the Organ with both hands and feet (which is the part in octaves in the left hand). I do agree with you if you can play Bach you can play most and composer.

  • It takes real talent to pull that off on a piano. All I can say is, "WOW!!!".

  • this guy has skills. about half of the notes in 1:00 -1:10 are octaves (unless he's doing the version without octaves which alot of people do). i don't get how he plays them so fast

  • Busoni gives the extra octaves on the right hand's first note as optional - and to be honest, you'd be mad to try and play them at that speed anyway!

  • @incrediboy729 i dont think he plays octaves because his hands are not really streched or he has huge hands.

  • Nice performance. The piano is not a sustaining instrument, sounds plinky-plinnk compared to an organ.

And an organ can cause the whole stage to vibrate ... something a piano can never do.

  • vibrating stage is really not an intent of piano nor organ...

  • Nice piece, less impressive performance to my opinion. I think it sounds nowhere near the original Organ version. I found Michelangeli's interpretation of this piece way more impressive to hear. I find this pianist makes things really unnecessary long and not particulary interesting to listen to. Of course it might be that a lot of the musicial interpretation of this pianist dissapeared while recording the piece, nevertheless this interpretation hasn't really caught my fullest attention.

  • sorry to 'comment on ur comment'. but i dont think u r giving any 'musical reasons' for criticizing this performance. u just say a) it's not as beautiful as the organ and b) michelangeli's interpretation is better.

    a) doesnt apply to gavrylyuk's quality as a pianist, and b) is pretty... trivial (Michelangeli! ..do u need to say that?!)

  • *standing ovation*

  • without words

  • anybody have a notes to this piece?? :)

    amazing

  • I do:)

  • can you send me? please :)

  • It's on IMSLP (spread the word, there are maaaany more)

  • Busoni

  • Ottima interpretazione, mi piace la calma iniziale, la toccata non è affrettata ma ben equilibrata e la fuga non molto legata si avvicina di piu al tocco bachiano. Direi che è un vero bach/busoni e non un busoni/bach. Bravo pianista!

  • Amazing!

  • superb.

  • me emocione ..

  • The intensity and mastery of Gavrylyuk is stunning, and the way he plays the exposition (in the fuga!) so clearly and delicately, then builds so perfectly to the climax is beautiful and very intense.

The emotional aims of both composers and the performer have been balanced to make a wonderful creation. I will probably be attacked for speaking for Bach, but honestly, when he wanted to be passionate, he made it fairly obvious!

  • Magnifico!!! Adoro esta pieza de Bach para piano Bendito Bach!!

  • izumitel'nui pianist.master vusokodo klassa. bravo!!!

  • 200 STARS!

  • Everyone is entitled to their opinion. My opinion on this piece... It's the best I've ever heard anyone play this on a piano. A moving masterpiece of art so brilliantly enlightened by powerful emotion and skill. I think Bach would be proudly inspired enough to give this man a standing "O" ...BRAVO!!...BRAVO!!

  • I like this piece on piano, but for me, the ultimate version is by E. Power Biggs. Nothing I've heard yet can compare.

  • I keep going back to this one; it reminds me that the fugue can be taken slower than some of the renditions on here - and played effectively. Very reassuring!

  • ...if Bach could listen to him he would cry (joy tears)

  • Woooooooooow!!!! Perfecto!

  • The fugue is so wonderful!

  • Lol yeah this is different fro organ version. Maybe from this reason is called transcription :). Maybe from this reason we have piano and organ because both are quite different instruments. If piano have same sound as organ why we need it? I look at this piece as really cool piano piece very difficult and with some similarities in melody to it's ogran original version. Simple this is piano transcription.

  • And i must say this is really well played great piano transcription. I know faster version but i think this is better. For me this is best version (i compare only this piece -bach busoni tocatta and fugue d minor not organ versino or another transcriptions) . 5 stars. Enjoy - who dont likeit i am sure u find lot organ versions here too ;).

  • well you are partly right, he plays a total diffrent version than i have seen in any piano notes of this toccata. he adds more notes of his own which i like.

  • Thats busoni's transcription - yeah it's quite difficult :) lot of notes but i think really cool

  • I want to get a copy of this transcription. Does anyone know which he is using?

  • i think its Busoni's transcription

  • he brings out the melody. very dramatic.

  • Impressive. More like this soon to come at ClassicalArtMusic(dot)ning(dot)com.

  • WORDERFUL !

  • Thank god this video is here... I'm learning this for a competition and WOW some of those parts are so dense with chords I can't tell which voices to bring out. 5*

  • good luck with that. i warn you though, it seems like suicide to try playing this .

if the stress doesnt get to you, the fractured finger tips will. lol.

  • Oh god yes my fingers are dying with this; as long as there's no fast double notes I'm safe :P but there are difficulties in this piece I've never thought existed lol

  • his forte is amazing.

  • Cool really cool best busoni version i ever seen - i think tempo as it should be.

  • I didn't think this version was playable. Amazing

  • I like it a lot - a nice relaxed tempo but agree with the critism about his manerisms - best to listen, not watch!

  • this verssion is very "Piano", and still carries the Orisinal spirit of BWV 565 , not poor imitation of an organ. love it.

  • It's good, but then it's too much, and then he looks like he's in really bad pain. It's kinda awkward watching him. =P

but otherwise, it's basically holy friggin crap how the hell did he play that.

  • needs to be at a higher tempo an some places

  • Have you tried Busoni's version for the piano? This is extremely good, trust me.

  • Alexander Gavrylyuk is fantastic.

    He is a master

  • not so great??????omg you have really high standards!!!!!! this peice is really fabulous!!!!!!!!! especially played by him on the piano seeing as it was originally written for the organ!!!!!!

  • Great as this is on the piano, it pales in comparison to the organ version. You get so much more "BAM!!" from the chords on the organ, especially those amazing dissonances leading on to each other just dying to resolve and when they finally to you dribble in your pants. Bach's music really is orgasmic lol.

But yeah, this was very good, but nothing compared to the organ version. BTW I'm neither a pianist or an organ player so I'm completely unbiased.

  • im a pianist but i agree(about the versions). still the piano version does have its own qualities as well.

  • really really great perfamance!!!

  • This is the very best I've ever heard of this piece on the piano.

  • BRAVO, BRAVO!!!
