Ecellent review not constantly going on about the so called negative aspects of the car.

Afterall this was a car designed for the European market and really is totally unsuited to the American market.

Gas prices have to be cheap in the Us due to the huge distances some people have to travel.

Currently gas prices are £1.25 a Litre here in the Uk about £6 a gallon.

Imagine if you were paying that in the states CIVIL UNREST.

I would like to know what tires for this thing costs and also the cost for a tune-up.

Tires are $75-$100 each, but the car is so light, it'll take a long time to wear them down. Tune-up's are easy, you can do it yourself...oil and filter, about fifty bucks...

@kasagar Thanks for the info. Good to know. This thing just isn't frugal at all. It's supposed to be the ultimate in efficiency, but when you break it down, it's just not. I can buy cheap rubber for $60/ea, oil/filter change is $30, tune ups about $50, which I can do myself. So you take that into consideration for a small car like Yaris or Accent, and they seem cheaper.

How long before the 3rd gen comes out? I'm afraid to buy a 2nd gen only to be pissed off when a new 3rd gen comes out and totally blows the 2nd gen away... just the same as other car makers have done, killing the value f the previous versions since the newer versions are so radically different. And there's no way you can upgrade. You simply have to get rid of the entire car and buy a new one, which is insane.

It will take a couple of years. They produced the first gen. from 1998 to 2007. And they only set a seccond gen. because some complicaded laws (about the crash-savty for walkers) in europe. So this car dont need every 3 years a new gen.

I've sat in this car and I'm 6'2". The driver side is ok but there's not enough leg room on the passenger side. I would not want to sit on the passenger side for more than 5 minutes and even that would be difficult. It's a neat car but it's not really a great value. If it was $7,000-$8,000 it would be more appealing. This is basically a motorcycle on 4 wheels with a cage. Why does it cost so much?

I agree. If it were $7-8k, it would be more appealing. I was wanting a motorcycle and this car fits my bill perfectly. I'd rather have the smart and have a cranking sound system and A/C and best part of all, be out of the rain.

You need to do something so that way you can use that for the blame to explain to people why you're doing it. Without those excuses, people will think your are certifiable. Thing is, the Mazaspeed3 isn't much more than the Brabus and then you get a car that runs 0-60 in under 6 seconds. And for $1500 more you could put a new turbo to make it go 450 horsepower!!

Nobody wants the $11,500 car. Why would you buy a car without air-condition? By the time you add all of the normal stuff and have a car without those ugly hub caps, you're about $16,000 out the door with all taxes. That's $4,000 more than the $11,500 you quoted.

I checked the convertible... with the clock/tach, day time running lights, day time running lights, power steering... will cost about $20,000 out the door and then another $400+ to add the aftermarket cruise control.

I've sat in the smart fortwo car, it feels like sitting in a small Cessna 150 airplane and I work at the golf course and I drive golf cart almost everyday so I don't mine driving one. however if you hate spending money on gas, nissan has a electric 4 door boxy car which is comming in 2010.

Speed is only half of the equation. The mass of the two vehicles also play a role. I.E. you are in a smart and you run into a Full Size Car like a Lincoln Town Car. The Town Car will fare much better because it is of greater mass then the Smart. In this collision the Smart will stop and reverse directions while the Lincoln Town Car may only stop or even continuing traveling in the same direction.

Look what happens when any car strikes a tractor trailer.

It seeme like it's very dangerous when you actually see the crash test in slow mo. But these things are built by Mercedes who is known for safety. The way you can tell if a car is a death trap is when they do the crash test, if you see that the frame above and below the driver is bending, then you know it's a poorly built car. (i.e. the chevy venture)

Did you see that both of the most respected testing authorities in the US have given this little car test results of equally save, larger, less fuel efficient vehicles. Maybe the Canadian model should meet the same standards if it doenst already. Just check it out.

True, no independent US agency has crash tested it yet (it has been DOT approved though).

I trust the Euro NCAP crash testing enough to be willing to drive the car. Just look up "smart crash test" and you'll find how truly safe the car is.

I had a 2006 smart fortwo but crashed it into a tree doing 60km/h after falling asleep at the wheel, very safe cars, wasn't hurt at all, can't wait for this new model to come to australia. GO smart!!

Cause where I work, we store them here before they go to the dealer. And I'm sorry as a driver of many different makes and models. I have road tested these "Smart Cars" and I just would not take it on the highway. It's not that roomy, and not fast. Also bigger more safer vehicles still with all the technology has casualties so my opinion is on american highways this car is unsafe. Again just my opinion.

Wonsdloc, you 'road test' the cars? For whom? maybe you or your company has a full road test report available to review. You'd need to define roomy because the Smart has more 'trunk' space than a Mini Cooper. It seats 2, have you ever sat in the back seat of a Mini? Good luck. check the crash test results from the IIHS and NTSHA, they've given great crash test results. So I am glad it is just your opinion.

The 0-60 speed is something like 12+ seconds. No way I'd take a car that pokey on the highway. If you needed sudden acceleration to avoid an accident, you'd be dead.

The newest Fortwo has improved accelleration. Just 9.5 seconds to 60 mph. check the stats on autos:com. The car is ever improving as one would expect. Stronger and safer for the US market, have a look at the iihs web site. keep in mind, if safety is only in size, will US drivers soon be tooling around in Semis? How long can YOU afford 12 MPG to be "safe"?
