ok the real reason why they changed or replaced Temper Temper with Playing the game is because they had loads of complaints from parents of young children who found the temper temper scene disturbing and too scary. The excuse about the dutch company not wanting it because of the kids in the show being on trail is just Cameron Mackintosh and disney's way of covering up the fact that they have had loads of complaints! very PC sadly!
@poppinsexpert Stiles and Drewe DID come up with the song, after criticisms from the dutch production team (they didn't like the kids "being put on trial"). This came from a "podcast"-like interview they (Stiles and Drewe) did a few years back and is completely factual (this info is right from the song writers' lips). You're right too, though, about how Disney got lots of complaints about the song (unfortunately, as I liked "Temper" more). That maybe the reason why it was added to the US shows.
"Temper Temper" just felt out of touch with the rest of the show. I didn't feel as attached to it in terms of story. At the very least, it makes more sense to have Mary actually involved in the number.
Plus, this song is SO much more mysterious and dreamlike.
playing the game is a beautifull song and has a very pretty lyric to it. Well done to George and Antony for yet another great song. I never liked Temper Temper.
Can someone post the lyrics so i can understand the words? I've seen this show 3 times lol, but only the thrid time when I saw the tour did they do this song. I'm a big fan of the show and would like to know the word sto this new song. Can anyone help?
OR if you know where there is a clearer recording lemme know!
You know? I kinda like Playing The Game better than Temper Temper. I was kinda confused though when I viewed this the first time and I was loving this song at the same time. I was like "Wasn't Temper Temper after Supercali?" but then again this is the Broadway Cast with Laura as Mary. I was fortunate to see Laura and then meet her at stage door. I loved her.
Well this doesn't teach kids anything! Just that if they break their toys, someone will fix them! If Temper, Temper made kids think that the toys would come to life if they treated them bad, at least it taught them a lesson!
@jenniaqua Sure it does!! Temper Temper was a fear song. Teaching through fear is not a positive lesson (which is what Mary Poppins is ALL about. Fear doesn't teach - look at the father). Mary Poppins teaches through "games" so this song fits in perfectly. The toys get to tell them how much they are hurt and in the end, they leave! The kids have no toys... therefore they get to think about how they treated the toys while they sit and do nothing. will appreciate them more upon return.
@Kris1907 Temper Temper also helped in representing the darkness from the book that it seems like no one ever thinks about anymore. Most people have seen the movie that Disney did and thinks its supposed to be for all ages, which it isn't. Parents should actually listen to the warnings next time. Temper temper is playing in New York again I've heard (from a VERY reliable source) so I look forward to seeing it.
I like this song because Laura is singing amazingly but i prefer "temper temper " because its got a great dark feeling to it and its a lovely ensemble number but nothing beats Laura high note on this though

@Racooonarecute Sorry kid, but that is not what youtube is about. I'm sorry to say that life is not a place where everyone is nice and friendly. There are people out there who will not be so nice. The internet is a perfect example. It's filled with good and bad people. Youtube is a media website, and people will have contradicting opinions. If someone tries to start a fight, either don't respond or end it quickly. Tough world, but that's life.
@boffinme80 that's what the stage manager told me when I went on the Backstage tour on Broadway. But I thought Playing the Game was MUCH creepier than Temper Temper...and I'm eighteen years old XD
@MrMrMrprofessor the song itself is just weird but the chorography makes it creeper. seriously, I took all my old toys out of my room for awhile after seeing it XD Temper Temper was EPIC this was just weird...and creepy at times with what the actors had to do XD
@broadwaysweetie I know what you mean. Every time I see some special on TV about toys coming to life because they were treated badly, I start treating my toys alot better. Anyway, you have a better view then I do because you've actually seen the show. I just like Temper Temper better. But that's just my opinion.
@MrMrMrprofessor When you watch it in the musical, its definitely creepy. Its in the dark lighting with all the toys growing big and being mean/ freaking out the kids.
@ChristophProbst You've got to admit, that Temper Temper is creepy too. It puts the kids on trial and finds them guilty. And I always love the line: "Children who refuse to learn, will not return!" In my own opinion, that is creepier.
where did you find this song?? I COMPLETELY prefer this song over "temper, temper" ...it sounds too dark for me compared to the rest of the songs in the musical.. but anyways, I would love to find this song =)
well this does keep the punishment and scare of Temper Temper along with the living toy confrontage, while toning it down a bit. but the origonal song has a more bouncy yet creepy beat that really wakes up the listener. Temper Temper gets the point of the song around better: Don't loose your temper, for it's tough to get back. here the lesson sounds more like : Mind your temper or else you'll wreck all your toys
@koolgpw The lesson here is that if you lose your temper, you'll lose everything. It's more of a warning. Temper Temper really scared children because at a young age, children believe that their toys will actually attack them like this, and they also said children won't see their parents again, and again children believed that.
@MrBroadwaygeek still you hav to admit that temper temper has beter music. this one is too slow. temper temper has a more bouncy tune will at the same time sending out the creepy appeal its aiming for. and technically the toys never attacked jane and michal, they just tied them up in a ribbon. cant bide for the never see parents thing, ill admit that took it a bit far
It does sound quite nice actually, it has a SLIGHT sound of Temper Temper to it. Does Valentine look less scary now I'm guessing? What happens on stage during this number?
@TRWolf I actually saw this show Feb. 27th. I was aware of what Temper Temper was like before seeing the show, and "Playing the Game" is exactly the same with the set. Regardless the show was spectacular with this and it seemed to make more sense with this. Temper Temper didn't seem to be something Mary Poppins would do. But everything is pretty much the same. At the end the children are put to sleep, and then she goes on the roof with Bert.
@MrBroadwaygeek Are the toys still sinister looking though? Does it start off with the creepy bit at the start with the doll's house and Valentine coming out? And does the nursery raise and the wallpaper stretch, like in Temper Temper?
@TRWolf yes the nursery rises, the toys and the costumes are exactly the same. The set again is exactly the same. And valentine also does come out of the doll house when Mary says "Are you feeling better Valentine?" The things the toys do are a little different, i remember seeing them take a ribbon and circling around the children and playing tug of war with them in the center. Its not different really, but the lyrics are less scary, Temper Temper said children wont see their parents again.
I think Temper Temper kept more to the books. Every change Disney makes to show, it makes original author of the books roll around in her grave. She wasn't keen on the Disney one, and I don't know what'd she think about all these changes.
i saw the show thursday in cincinnati and one thing i noticed is that in a way they kept some aspects of temper temper in this number but it isn't the same so i agree with TimeToDefyGravityXXX with temper temper would have been better.
well, i wonder how it was only the audiences in broadway that were displeased with temper temper, london audiences were fine....besides this song completely destroys the incredible effect temper temper had and when you actually read the books the things that happen in temper temper are very similar.
The things that are done in "Temper, Temper" are not things Mary Poppins would do. The things that happen in it are something that Maleficient or Jafar would create not Mary Poppins. My sister didn't like the song when she saw it in London. Also, my friend, who's 26 and will be seeing the show this month, heard about how frightnening "Temper, Temper" was and was glad it was replaced. I doidn't Mind "Playing the Game" when I saw the show.
I like this song, but I think I prefer temper temper, I don't know why, but what mary poppins does in temper temper, isn't that something mary would do, in the books she does it often. But in (I saw the dutch producution a few days ago) it looked like she was bewitching the toys, and that was more frightning to me than the temper temper I saw in London!
If I remember correctly, according to an interview with George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, Playing the Game was meant to replace Temper Temper in the Dutch production (the producers didn't like the concept of the kids being put on trial) and they wanted to put it in the US tour for a test run. While I like "Temper" better (mainly because of its darker tones), "Playing the Game" isn't THAT bad of a song. Besides, Temper Temper is still referenced quite a bit in this song.
It was not written for the Dutch Production. Various sources say: "Beginning in 2009, a new song called "Playing the Game" replaced "Temper, Temper" in all of the productions. In this song the toys also come to life, but Mary does not leave the room and the children are instead taught how to take better care of their toys after fighting over them."
@ArtistM George Stiles and Anthony Drewe said that in an interview. The producers of the Dutch version of Poppins weren't keen on the idea of putting the kids on trial (in "Temper Temper"), which lead them to write "Playing the Game." It was first used in the touring production, however, as a "test run."
@TruelySonicHOG thats nonsense from what I have heard. They changed it because they had loads of complaints from parents of young children who found the temper temper scene disturbing. The excuse about the dutch company not wanting it because of the kids being on trail is just Cameron Mackintosh and disney's way of covering up the fact that they have had loads of complaints! xx
Right now I'm saying that I like "Temper, Temper" better, although I haven't seen how this number has been staged yet so I can't pass judgement yet.
From what I hear though, the number really robbed the scene of it's scary feel, which is what I loved so much about the original song. (It was actually my favorite part!!)
I disagree. Unfortunately this song cheapens the stakes... I felt that there was focus taken away from how cruelly the children spoke to their mother.
Hey... thanks for uploading this. I have been desperate to hear it. Im not sure whether I prefer Temper Temper actually... I find that this is too 'happy' feeling compared to Temper Temper... I thought temper temper was, musically more interesting (in terms of composing the song) and had a better contrast with the story but that is just my opinion. :) How come it was actually changed? :)
Disney felt that Temper Temper was too frightening for children. So they tried to lighten things up a bit. To be honest, I don't think they succeeded. A friend of mine saw the touring production, and she said that song would porbably give her nightmares, and she's 16!
@TimeToDefyGravityXXX so do I, its a very pretty song and a lot better than Temper Temper but ive not seen the actual scene that goes on with the song yet. What does Mary do when she sings this song please? are there any videos of the Playing the game scene please?
I heard from a freind who has seen the show that she puts the children to sleep but what else happens in the Playing the game song. Do you have the lyrics please? I can't tell what she is singing all through the song. Please reply
@beckyrooper Basically, like in "Temper," Valentine comes out of the doll house and the other toys come from the walls. Mary then wakes them up and they find themselves in a nightmare with the toys somehow alive and giant size. The toys mess around with the kids (even putting them in a middle of a tug of war game, using Mary's tape measure) and eventually, the kids go back to sleep, terrified and pissed off at Mary. While they're asleep, Mary leaves the room and the Act 1 finale is the same.
This is so crap compared to Temper Temper.

WHY? why did they change it? and when? i never saw the show, only have the cd, but i really can't express how much more i like temper, temper...:-(

I disagree. Unfortunately this song cheapens the stakes... I felt that there was focus taken away from how cruelly the children spoke to their mother.

they should add this to the cast recording. no need to make a new one just add this =-) maybe as a special

Hey... thanks for uploading this.
