What the heck! that is not a bonsai! it is a tortured plant!, I can't believe that even the art of bonsay has been taken to the "EASY WAY" that Americans are so use to export to the worl, without any idea about what is the real value of things.
suskky- u can use any material that drains well and has some nutrition u can get the nutrition part from any soil and then mix with pummice stone or bark chips- anything to help water flow through the soil. u can also find sphagnum moss online- its very light so should be cheap shipping. but the sphagnom doesnt really make it easier-maybe cleaner, not as messy but thats it.
2 things, I think the reason there was a trunk the whole way down was that it is an airlayering. Plus I have just recently made a bonsai for my uncle for christmas. When I was getting rid of old soil I found a really cool anchor root. It was a little leaf ficus and when I was done I tied a bow around the trunk, it looks really cool.
i am japanese and i really admire your mastery but please please say bonsai (bonssai) not bonzai !! :)

Cool idea. I like that you made the point of giving trees to others that will take care of them.

What moss is that green kind that you put on around the 8:15 minute mark? Thanks

I just ordered sphagnum moss on the internet. And many other mediums will work. Keep experimenting!

A ficus is one of the few trees that can handle this amount of stress on the roots.
