flaking mainly occurs from not applying the product correctly. So to answer your question, for me the answer is no :O) I find that gels are best applied to build up free, freshly washed, wet hair (do not towel dry).... also if you impliment oils into your regimen and/or apply a leave-in then apply the gel the chances of flaking is less than likely. Also doing the Product Rinse (see video) also helps with preventing flaking. Hopes this helps :O)
textured hair seems to naturally tangle (entwine with one another). So the answer would be yes. It's not knotted tangled but a natural tangle that's easily detangled only to create the natural tangle again... so in other words you'll detangle our hair type all day without realizing this is something it naturally does...
(cont) I'm not sure if you could just flow your fingers through our hair without hitting a natural tangle (the point where your hair stops but in reality it's just the strands clumping or entwining with one another to form a more uniformed pattern.
yes it is:) it's the BASS Brush which can be found at Whole Foods. You can get similar results with a Cushion Brush (found at stores such as wal mart or target, it has similar bristles) or Denman Brush (found at Sally's). I also get this effect using a Bone or Ox Horn Comb and then going back over by smoothing with hands. You can try by detangling hair with a comb first then smoothing with hands to see if you achieve similar results.
your baby is too cute. she tickled me on this video...very beautiful hair. i love how she has that "shine/moisture" look, is that just from using the gel earlier or did you use something on it for the pony?....sn:my hair always looks kinda dull idk why
give your hair a good washing (shampoo), acv rinse, let acv rinse sit for a couple minutes, rinse, and try a new conditioner... what kind are you using now?
as far as butter, I've always found raw Shea, extra virgin Coconut Oil and Jojoba Oil to leave a dull film on my hair (butters used alone not whipped or an ingredient in a product).
@NappyChronicles currently i use vo5 conditioner and use herbal essence hello hydration after to leave a little bit in.. i havent used any raw shea butter or anything like that, but sometimes i do use evoo before conditioning...been natural for a year and still havent found anything that can hold moisture and shine...besides using ic gel and water
maybe it's just me, idk, but although herbal essence gets rave reviews, I found that it left my hair dull. Yes it is a great detangler but as far as the end results, thumbs down (hair had a dull film). I would recommend you try another conditioner and see if it helps... Ones I've tried and like are Tresemme Naturals, Aussie Moist, V05 Moisture Milks (maybe use it as both), Infusium 23, Garnier Frutics, Suave Coconut Conditioner, to name a few low-cost conditioners.
how do you go natural without cutting off your hair my 12 year old had your little girls hair texture but i permed it and it is just wavy now she wants to go natural but doesnt want to cut all of her hair off please help <3
Slowly cut her relaxed ends off. Trim/Cut 1/2 - 1 inch off every 2 - 3 months until all relaxed ends are cut off. You will find the two textures to be a challenge and some say between 6 months to a year of transitioning this way (slowly cutting relaxed ends off) it gets easier. @NappyChronicles Oh no you use the full moon method? My grandma told me about this looong ago and I just thought she was out of her mind, so this really works?? LOL...Sorry grandmother!!
Do you know what texture # your daughters hair is because my daughters hair does the same thing and I've been trying all kinds of products to help stop the shrinkage.
I find that system to be quite confusing. Her hair Texture is Cotton Wool (like mine), Her Pattern is Crispy (not loose waves but tight waves her hair's more of an z than an s shape, s shape tends to spiral, z shape doesn't). On her latest video on her youtube channel TheRaveReview, I show close ups of her pattern at the end of the vlog, in that vlog I think we've figured it out... it's one of three reasons... growth, dry under a dryer, or product change minimized shrinkage.
Anything that pulls on the hair can cause breakage especially if worn the same way for a long period of time... I switch it up for her. Sometimes rubber bands are used (I never put her rubberbands on tight) while most of the time no rubber bands are used.
my 3 yr old little gril has what looks like the same texture as yours. and i am looking for new ideas also.i found that cantu shebutter and profictiv works good to mouisturze but i still havent found anything for the shrinkage. I would say both girls seem to have around 3b hair maybe so was thinking maybe will try missjessies products.
1:16 last sentence Corbin bleu thats exactly how my hair is when it drys up its all nice wet super flat and wavy curly like a mermaid but then turns in a puff.
Wow the pony puff looks wonderful! That gives me motivation to go natural, but we have different hair types. She looks to be about 3c/4a and i am 4b/c i believe. But i still love my texture. May i ask what kind of camera do you use?
She's 4a kinky cotton wool texture. It's always inspiration to hear that one loves their texture :o) The camera I use is Sony Carl Zeiss. Wishing you happiness on your journey.
How old is your daughter? My daughter is 3 and she reaks havoc on her hair. She cut a big patch out of her hair and I have been struggling to keep it healthy ever since. It's growing slowly but surely though. Anyways your daughter is a natural beauty. It's good she loves and appreciates her hair. How did you teach her this? I want to teach my daughter this as well.
LOL I don't know it's just something i grew up hearing. By reaking havoc I mean she...hmmm..how do I say it? Like she messes it up basically. I don't know it's not as easy to explain as I thought.
I understand what you're saying. For example, you send her to school one way (with her hair combed) and she comes back home another (hair coming a loose or all over the place).
I don't know what to do for my daughter's hair. She has some spots I want to call "heat damaged" because my sister would go crazy with that flat iron. I might take her to a salon and let them cut it even or something, I don't know.
I have a playlist, To Use Heat or Not to Use Heat on my Channel's Home Page. There I have a list of youtubers that use heat, some that experienced heat damage & others who use heat with success. Click on it to view the vlogs, there may be a youtuber in the list that can further assist :o) In the meantime try different styles (twist, braids, braid outs, twist outs and bantu knot outs), give her hair lots of TLC (moisture and moisutrize) & slowly trim her ends & with time her hair will revert.
When the gels make it hard try letting it dry then putting EVOO in your hands and scrunching the hair to get rid of the hardness. You daughter is beautiful and I love her hair.
DJDProductions, I can't thank you enough for this tip. It actually worked!! Instead of washing the gel out at night, I now apply EVOO which saves me from going to sleep with my hair damp. Thank you Again :o)
PLEASE PLEASE do more vids like this I was having trouble with my oldest daughters hair but this helped me alot...thank you so much she is adorable.. Is she the baby?? Or does she have older siblings
I've never seen a little one sit so patiently to get her hair done. You can tell that she loves her hair. Try using a ponytail after the product application to stretch it. Not tight but just enough to help weigh the hair down. Curlmebella has a tutorial and results
watch?v=kNaZFgpeGEg ( part 3 towards the end she uses ponytail to help stretch)
Both of you are gorgeous... ! I love your vids... for less shrinkage maybe you can try 4 or 5 big cornrows overnight and then when you take them out the hair should be stretched out from being braided or twisted straight back. Hope that helps! : )
You have a beautiful daughter. I'm so glad that you enjoy taking care of her natural hair. This is the way it should be and should have been for all of us. She'll grow up appreciating it and knowing how to care for it. That's priceless.
She is sooooo adorable! :) BTW, I love your "accidental discoveries"!!! And honestly, even the use of a washcloth instead of a spritz bottle comes just in time for the colder months to avoid so much wetness but still get the same or better results!
Mz. Diva was doing it! I know you mentioned the stiffness but I have seen on other natural videos,, that some leave a good conditioner in thier hair then apply the gel. If you have already tried it let me know,, if you havent,, you may want to try it and see if that works! Hope it helps!
Her hair looks super soft and healthy. I like how you get her involved in her hair. This will make it more easier for her take take care of her her on her own natural hair when she gets older.
she's so cute....she's a mini you ! I will have to try that method on my daughter, she always wants to wear her hair down, it's so cute wet but I hate the shape it takes when it dries ! Thanks for the tip !
I recently tried the clump method for the first time from your other video. I love the results. I think i'll try it on drier hair though, because I did get major shrinkage from having the hair wet when I wore the shower cap overnight. Other than that it was great. I don't know if you put leave in conditioner in your daughters hair at all when you clumped, but I just started doing it with the EcoStyler gel and by the end of the day my hair is very soft.
Okay this Vid Is just TOoooooooooo Cute!!! you have a great lil hair model over there,,, I love the fullness and texture of her hair! Good job Nappy :0)
And the face towel trick....wow! I just never would have thought to try it.
Thanks for sharing the things you do. It really is appreciated. You have me excited to play in my hair again!!!
Also...you have now also made me want that exact brush you used to detangle in this vid. I think you called it a "bass" brush? I'm getting ready to look it up on google...right...now...!!!
Thank you NappyChronicles for doing the research/results you do! I think that your tips on this vid are quite fascinating to me. I come up with "accidental discoveries" as well...but never thought to apply styler products to only very damp hair. I always, always, always thought the hair HAD to be sopping wet. Your daughter's texture/density...reminds me of my own. I'm very excited to experiment w/ the techniques you've opened me up to.
To retain the curl definition I suggest you wash and condition/detangle as usual. Rinse out her normal conditioner after detangling. Then do your curl clumping with a leave in conditioner (or any conditioner you decide to "turn into" a leave in). Clump sections and band each section you clump. Do that all over the head. It will probably take a bit to dry but hair should be elongated and some curl retained when you take everything out. Hope you try this and it works out for you! :)
For a stretched out look with no crunch and more movement you can do banding; omit the gel and just use a shea hair butter or any other hair moisturizer that isn't gel. Banding is just wrapping hair bands lengthwise alongs sections of hair. You can use ouchless rubber bands or any band without the metal ring in the center. You can youtube banding for natural hair.
I am experimenting with my daughters hair also trying to get that hanging curl, her hair type is similar to your daughters. I sent my daughter for school photos.. I had gelled her bangs and pulled the rest up into a curl puff; so when she lift they were hanging...LOL by the time she took the photo major shrinkage; we still purchased the photos. LOL
LOL...I LOVED 4:05 dont interupt the professional...her mommy has taught her WELL!!...lol...her hair is beautiful..and I loved the 8 hours after school results!!!....tell lil Nappy she gets 5 *****
She is TOO cute! Camiyah was so excited about the shout out!!! Thankyou for your support! I love these tips and I have been experimenting with my daughter's hair all day today. And btw, your daughter is your "mini-me" for sure! :-)
Don't be :o) This would be a great topic for one of her future videos. I'm always grateful for any and all advice, you never know, I may not know :) All comments are welcomed (o:
It is too much to ask of the hair along the perimeter to retain the entire head's volume of hair as you stretch it to the singular point where the bun/puff rests. Unfortunately, if you see 'waves' -- it's too tight and she'll pay a high price for that 'look' if the hairline is included.
I repeat, I wish someone had told my mother and I this when I was your daughter's age. My hair is growing back but only b/c I do not brush this way.
ITA :o) She only wears her hair in one ponytail once a week for dance classes. As for the waves, that's the pattern I get when I use gel followed with a brush to lay the hair down. For Fall Carnival she wore the fro with the kitty headband, the front portion of her hair was gel down then the headband was placed on her hair & she had waves without a ponytail. My DH has a low cut & his hair waves when brushed a certain way without gel.
your daughter could be like the poster child for natural hair and she looks just like you! Her hair looked beautiful to me but I guess only you know best.
My only word of caution would be to limit the top pony/puffs. I've been natural my whole life and I generally only wore my hair brushed back as you showed and in a bun. I suffered very gradual hair loss over the decades along my hair line. I'd advise protecting the hairline with a loosely gathered 1 inch thick flat twist around the hairline perimeter (and then pull the rest back in the bun/puffs for dance class if needed.)
When she was a baby, I learned that the hard way as well... she was missing hair in her nape area from me rebrushing and placing her pontails in the same place for weeks. I now switch it up. Sometimes I do the fro or individual braids, other times the one pony puff, or like today she has two pony puffs. Thanks for the heads up. Good looking out .^_^.
after i wash my hair i use my moisturizer, the eccostyler gel, and i use my hands to clump my curls. i let my hair dry most of the way, and while it's still slightly damp, i do big 2 strand twist till it's completely dry. when i undo them, the curls are still clumped and the twists help stretch the hair.
Hmmm, I noticed that since the weather has changed, my hair doesn't react like it used to when I used gel. All I use now for clumping/twisting is a hair butter and a thick oil (i.e castor oil). The combo makes my hair very soft and gives it a nice defined look without the hardness. That's my suggestion. Try to do the clumping without gel and use a hair butter with a thick oil ( such as castor oil or olive oil).
I realized the same thing last month. I now only do my twist with an organic conditioner or leave in and get the same definition as if I've done it with gel. Once I do the out style I then apply the gel for that. I haven't tried letting it out without the use of gel. Maybe I'll experiment over the weekend. Thanks for the advice :)
Your daughter is gorgeous and she looks just like you! I think you did a great job with her hair. My son uses that same gel on his fade, and now I am thinking of trying it as well. :)
she is so cuteeee!!!!! you have to msg with the products you use in her hair, i've been shopping around for the right products forr my daughters' hair...so if you could...tks
Although we have different pattern (her's is 4a kinky, mine is 4a/3c coily) we use the same products. Check out my fotki albumn for our staples. fotki(dot)com/NappyChronicles

it maybe the products you're using that's making your hair look dull, I have noticed this with certain conditioners, and creme products.

This is the cutest video ever. Your daughter is beautiful.
DLiteFullyNBliss 2 years ago
She is one of the most beautiful children i have ever seen (shrinkage or no shrinkage ;D)!
She is a natural in both senses of the word (in front of the camera and with her hair).
If you do a few large braids when her hair is damp with a little aloe vera gel for hold and then unbraid when dry, she should retain some length.
(My apologies if you have already tried that unsuccessfully)
Cheers

And the face towel trick....wow! I just never would have thought to try it.
Thanks for sharing the things you do. It really is appreciated. You have me excited to play in my hair again!!!
Also...you have now also made me want that exact brush you used to detangle in this vid. I think you called it a "bass" brush? I'm getting ready to look it up on google...right...now...!!!
Thanks a million! :-)

Kookie28Krisp 2 years ago
To retain the curl definition I suggest you wash and condition/detangle as usual. Rinse out her normal conditioner after detangling. Then do your curl clumping with a leave in conditioner (or any conditioner you decide to "turn into" a leave in). Clump sections and band each section you clump. Do that all over the head. It will probably take a bit to dry but hair should be elongated and some curl retained when you take everything out. Hope you try this and it works out for you! :)

Hmmm....I might experiment with your method as well <--thanks! :-)

(weewinkle7) I will be putting this on the to try list... thanks for the suggestion :o)

LOL

Continued...
Natural hair is strong, but not that strong.
ChillAsAFrosty 2 years ago
ITA :o) She only wears her hair in one ponytail once a week for dance classes. As for the waves, that's the pattern I get when I use gel followed with a brush to lay the hair down. For Fall Carnival she wore the fro with the kitty headband, the front portion of her hair was gel down then the headband was placed on her hair & she had waves without a ponytail. My DH has a low cut & his hair waves when brushed a certain way without gel.

your daughter could be like the poster child for natural hair and she looks just like you! Her hair looked beautiful to me but I guess only you know best.

She is beyond cute!
I wish someone had told my mother and I this...
ChillAsAFrosty 2 years ago
When she was a baby, I learned that the hard way as well... she was missing hair in her nape area from me rebrushing and placing her pontails in the same place for weeks. I now switch it up. Sometimes I do the fro or individual braids, other times the one pony puff, or like today she has two pony puffs. Thanks for the heads up. Good looking out .^_^.

after i wash my hair i use my moisturizer, the eccostyler gel, and i use my hands to clump my curls. i let my hair dry most of the way, and while it's still slightly damp, i do big 2 strand twist till it's completely dry. when i undo them, the curls are still clumped and the twists help stretch the hair.
deltadiva15 2 years ago 2
Hmmm, I noticed that since the weather has changed, my hair doesn't react like it used to when I used gel. All I use now for clumping/twisting is a hair butter and a thick oil (i.e castor oil). The combo makes my hair very soft and gives it a nice defined look without the hardness. That's my suggestion. Try to do the clumping without gel and use a hair butter with a thick oil ( such as castor oil or olive oil).
Mzblakflower 2 years ago
I realized the same thing last month. I now only do my twist with an organic conditioner or leave in and get the same definition as if I've done it with gel. Once I do the out style I then apply the gel for that. I haven't tried letting it out without the use of gel. Maybe I'll experiment over the weekend. Thanks for the advice :)
