It's so strange to see the public perception of accounting to be all about math and taxes.

The math is basic arithmetic, and dealing with taxes is only a small portion of what accountants do. This makes it seem like accountants just do peoples' taxes.

@Juno672 I wouldn't say it's all basic arithmetic, especially when it comes to things like determining what the value of stock options are or what the present value of future cash flows deriving from a particular asset are. I think math and taxes though are the public's perception because most of the public only sees accountants for taxes; people aren't required to develop their own personal financial statements for an accountant to audit and render an opinion on.

@MacDragard - What accounting mainly consists of is miles and miles away from even intermediate algebraic concepts like systems of linear equations and logarithmic functions, etc., perhaps I should have been more clear. Even things like PV of FCF on things like bonds boil down to consulting a PV chart for annuities, etc. This isn't to say that accounting is simple or basic in nature, because that is FAR from the truth. However, math classes they are not, more like advising.

@Juno672 The math is simple, but it can be very difficult to apply unless you know the specific rules inside and out. My accounting classes were mainly understanding rules and regulations (and the exceptions to those rules), like what to do when an asset becomes impaired or why companies would capitalize some expenses and write off others.

@MacDragard And just wait, if (more like when) we switch to IFRS instead of US GAAP, there is going to be a lot of work to do in order to change peole over. No LIFO for one!!

@zentner18 IFRS is simple compared to US GAAP (mostly leaves application to management's judgment), but you're correct in that there will be huge conversion costs involved. I don't know when the SEC will require IFRS standards (ideal date is 2014), but I do know that IFRS will be tested on the CPA exam starting in 2011. There is so much debate going on over IFRS standards, particularly because Enron is the reason why many think US GAAP failed and we should convert.

@MacDragard I agree IFRS is simple compared to GAAP. But the conversion is going to be harder... unless you can fall under SME rules, but you can't be publicly traded. If SEC allows it, it will be in 2015. The conversion project looks like it will take a bit longer than they thought, but I hope we get to it. Now I just have to pass the exam before it changes. I take the FAR in early Aug.

@gLeiLy22 It's challenging, yes, especially when it comes to things like accounting for securities or determining how to recognize revenue depending on the situation (do I recognize it as soon as the contract is created, or must I amortize it over the life of the contract?) or determining what the best estimate for future earnings will be for the next ten years. Much of accounting is subjective, especially determining an appropriate fair value for assets.
