If you break the laws of the road..Then yes you do need a permit from the local police department to close down those intersections. Only a stupid person would run a red light in front of a police officer.

The policy states they are not allowed to do this without permit and if city denies them permit it is illegal for them to do this. So in other words as it stand it is illegal, but lets say a supreme court rules the law is illegal and unconstitutional then what they do is legal. If you have a problem with law, get a lawyer.

CM is both free assembly and associative free speech, and a non-hirerarchical, rhizomal group of cyclists that come together for one day a month to ride home in the safety of their numbers. They don't need a permit to ride any more than a clusterfuck or cars needs a permit to clog up the streets every single day.

NYC is making poor economic development choices if it chooses to unconstitutionally infringe on the Assembly rights of protesters adavancing better bicycling transportation engineering. At the end of the day we have to think about how we can move the most amount of folks, the fastest, using the least amount of street space. Individual private cars are not the way to go.

Yes, sir. If one were there, one would know. The NYPD patiently endured a snootful of dysfunction from the Critical Mass protesters. Critical Mass's protestors are petrol-sniffing cyclists with tattoos and attitude, cross-addicted to ecstasy and violence. There are peaceful protests, and there are Critical Mass-type protests. Let the police distinquish which is which.
