If anyone has an actual interest in the topic, I suggest that you read Disposable People by Kevin Bales. It does still happen today, humans are the third largest illegal trade into the United States, behind drugs and guns. The number of slaves currently held in the US is (if my memory serves me well, and it might not be) near 200,000.

a cause of slavery is inbetween your left toes and hair. That which perpetuates slavery is much closer to home then you may think. One way it is perpetuated is by the consumers support of slave products. ie, where does your merchandise come from? If a clerk doesnt know where the clothes came from you may want to find out before buying those again.
