Flying with Swiss International Airlines was my worst ever aviation experience. Don't even try to complain because the customer service department are unhelpful and even the MD admitted that he had intstructed the organisation to ignore my correspondence.
It's called Swiss International Airlines, and most "international" airlines only do their videos in English, but you can ask a flight attendant in Swiss German, German or French (rarely Italian) if you are not so proficient in English, but when I travel Stockholm - Zürich, they often do the video in English and then German, as the airline is Zürich-based.
on our flight this video was subtitled in German and all the flight attendants spoke English, German and French. But their German is very very Swiss as is their French. Though it was not a problem to understand them.
@Ferike333 Swiss French is French with only small accentual differences, while Swiss German belongs to Alemannic, which should be classified as a language of its own. However, Standard German is also spoken, although more or less with a local accent.
@AndreDevecserii You're right about that. I've read a lot about the debate whether Alemannic should be considered a language on its own or only a dialect of German. Myself, I'd say it's a pretty influenced dialect of German that has long developed on its own with a large number of words and expressions used exclusively in Switzerland, Written Swyzzerdüütsch is however somewhat hard to read and understand without prior Alemaanic knowledge and experience.
Why don't they have subtitles in German, French, and/or Italian?
Why not also add a dub according to the origin and/or destination? I.E. German dub for flights going to and from German cantons and a French dub for flights going to and from French cantons?
Well, a lot of people can speak English, but on some routes the proportion can decrease (i.e. routes to Japan or China) - It seems like many Swiss do know English, though, so for Switzerland-USA or Switzerland-UK it may be fine to do only English
Ok, thats true, but I think people understand the pictures, and they don't need any subtitles. And there is a card with all safety instructions in front of your seat.
While they do have foreign language staff, if, say, 65% of the passengers are fluent only in Japanese and the announcement isn't done in Japanese, the staff may have a lot of work on their hands
There was an Air China crash in Korea in 2002. The Korean agency investigated and, on a side note, found that the safety demo wasn't done in Korean. The Korean agency reccommended doing a demo in Korean for flights to Korea.
They also have a German, French and Italian soundtrack which is always played through headphones. On some flights, the german version is played after english one over PA.
Also: Most Passengers can understand the safety video by the visual cues.
1. Which aircraft have this? Or is it all aircraft in the fleet?
2. Why not create another channel for the destination/origin language if the destination/origin is not in a country that speaks English, French, German, or Italian? I.E. Spanish for Colombia, Japanese for Japan, etc.
3. What about subtitles or an on-screen signer for those hard of hearing?
4. Some information may not be taken in if one does not understand any of the spoken languages or is deaf.
1. I think all aircrafts do have multiple sound tracks. Not sure 100%.
2. I've seen a video in Japanese. However these were not played consistently and only over PA and not headphones.
3. Subtitles are a good idea for those impaired. I think it stems from the swiss way of having four official and lived languages side by side. Road signs are only in one language only here.
4. PNR deaf pax get a card with the safety video transcript. The card also shows how evacuation horn can be visually seen.
You're absolutely right. I am Swiss and I will never fly again with Swiss, because the service is the worst I've ever seen. Furthermore, the flight attendants are very unfriendly and cold. Swiss should learn a lesson from Asian airlines.
Actually Airlines that have influence of western culture like Philippine Airlines (it is asian) they had before quality service but since their shutdown their quality of service has decreased but I prefer flying Eastern Airlines than Western Airlines.
Western Ppl don't have much feelings and they don't care much about the passsengers.
that's not always true. i've had wonderful service on northwest and terrible service on japan airlines. similarly, i've had a terrible time on delta and a great experience on air china.
IMO Swiss should play in English, then the language of the Swiss canton of the departing end (French or German), and/or the language of the Swiss canton of the receiving end. If the destination or origin is of a country that does not speak English nor French nor German that country's language should be represented too...
In most cases, passengers can understand simple English. And IMHO, the visuals are easily understood. If not, the percentage is very very low, and is not life threatening.
As an airline, they wouldn't want to translate everything to a dozen of languages as it is not very practical. This I believe, applies to any business.
If there is really a need, the aviation regulatory board of that country will require airlines to have translations for sure.
Usually an airline uses the "relevant" languages - I.E. Malev plays its safety video once in Hungarian, once in English, and once in a third language of the destination or origin country (i.e. Spanish for a flight to Spain, Dutch for a flight to the Netherlands)
i remember this vid on my first flight ever... on this vid you can not really see it, but at 2.50 the kid blinks with the eye... kinda to make you feel good :-) Now i took alot of flights with Swiss and every time saw it, so i did not imagine it :-) also notice that they have the biggest smile of there lifes ... (while there plane crashed :D)
keep up the good work...... this is informatiove stuff...have seen only the crew givin away demo...... anyways the swss chics can get a bit of rest aint it........
I flew Swiss to CAI from ZRH in 2005 and loved it! Flew AZ to CAI in 2006 and it was terrible! I miss Swiss, but I'm flying Swiss again this summer LAX-ZRH-FCO / ATH-ZRH-LAX . Teh A340 is beautiful

Most international carriers provide subtitles and/or separate dubs for English and other languages.
For example Continental does the safety demo in English once and Japanese once on a Houston to Narita flight
Vikkoman 2 years ago
On most routes to Asia, SWISS has «foreign language staff» just in case ;-) Sometimes you hear them re-do the announcements.

If they re-do the announcements, then it's okay.

usually there is a crew member from the country on board

But if there's a planeload full of people who cannot understand the safety demo the crew members will be overworked. :)
I know Europe has high rates of English fluency but some other countries do not...
