Brava!!! All of this superb singing from a woman who was accused of having no technique. On the basis of this, she would have been a heartbreaking Violetta. She puts many of her contemporaries to shame. Thanks!!
I hadn't heard this pairing since I could play the Scala LP, 20 years ago! Thank you, Douglas! Unlike her contemporaries, who tended to conceive of this scene as a pure display set, Garden sings very much in character. And sings very well, I might add. I find her timbre very expressive, the vocalism fluent and true. The last phrase of the recitative is full of sadness, the aria has a very individual rubato. Lovely.
Try 40 years, which I think was the last time I heard Garden's singing of this scene. It's everything AulicExclusiva says and more. Fluent, expressive in phrasing and tone, technically adept singing. One can harp on a detail here and there, but the overall effect is beautiful and meaningful, and there are a few fine touches. Thanks, Doug, for posting and thanks too, Aulic, for requesting.
I agree entirely with your commentary. I like what I believe is the original cadenza at the close of "Ah, fors e lui," and you're on the mark about the last phrase of the recitative portion. Thanks for your request!
