  • This video is a good one. I myself work on steam and i will tell you theres allways something interesting about it. There are days you hate it and days you love it. As a crewman, I have had to give autographs a few times. Not yet a fireman, but workin my way there. for now im a hostler. Start with a shovel and work your way up to a stoker.

  • my grandfater is peter smith and he fired this line, im pround to have him as a grandad who has fired the brilliant evening star and heard all of the stories first hand is just amazing

  • my favourite bit is have the fry up

  • I fondly remember watching this on TV when I was a child - of all the railway videos there are available, there's something special about this one.

  • I have a Panasonic video recorder/dvd recorder combo and I've used that to put all of my videos onto dvd. If you want to give a dvd to a friend new need to finalise the dvd and the Panasonic will do that for you too. I've uploaded home video to you tube and my old analog camera is plugged into the Panasonic and recorded to dvd and finalised then up loaded to you tube.

  • Brings back memiories for me as i fired 34016 for a day, when i lived in the UK. Sure was hot on the footplate, i started at 8am finished at 5pm.

  • I could listen to the likes of Donald Beale forever.. just a wonderful old man from a sadly bygone age where values were different and life was probably a whole lot simpler and more enjoyable!

I suspect Donald is now long since past judging by when this was made and some lucky people are no doubt sampling him driving an express 'in another place'...

    Wonderful video and highly enjoyable

  • I agree with you entirely, and you saved me a lot of writing, and it would have been a lot, and no amount of words could have described the job and all that went into it, I couldn't help but notice that somebody left a message with one of these videos saying that it was a dirty crappy job, but I echo the old boy's words, *it was a pleasure to go to work* thanks for posting this video

  • loved the videos, fond memories of British rail from the late fifties etc...ray ,sydney australia

  • I've read the story of the incident in the tunnels south of Bath, that was described by Donald Beale and Peter Smith, many times. It really puts hairs on the back of my neck.

Did you get the rest of the video? Or did you not get the rest at all?

    Good work anyhow.

May I ask, assuming you got this footage off VHS, how you put in onto PC?

  • yes we have the rest of the footage.. its all fuzzy and grainy and cant hear or see much! I often get asked this so here is my last response to someone asking!.. Hope it answers your question.

..oh wont let me put it on this comment so its on next comment :]

  • "we found this device called cameramate made by Zio Corperation which connects your vhs player to your computer. However nothing is ever that easy! It takes an expert computer knowledge to install all the drivers which I dont have so managed to get my uncle to install it all. Since then I have converted most videos to computer. Although recently it has refused to work so need to get my uncle back to re-install it!"

  • ..It comes with its own software for capuring video but it doesnt copy it at that excellent quality .. the best its used for is youtube! and I wouldnt make a DVD out of it. If you have Sony Vagas, which I do, this can also capure and record the image but with no sound! so still trying to work that one out!

  • Okay thanks for that. I sounds pretty daunting though, so I might put it off for a while. Certainly considering that I'm no computer expert.

I'll still look into it, as I have lots of footage from a few years ago, that I can't upload to PC.

Thanks for your advice, and I will bear it in mind.

    Cheers. :D

  • this is an amazing video
