In 2007, technically Hamilton won between the two drivers. It was separated by number of 4th places (if i remember correctly). This was all on Lewis' debut season after Alonso had just won 2 championships with Renault. As well as becoming the youngest driver to do the treble of pole position, win and fastest lap. Don't forget that he had the season almost wrapped up before the last 2 races with a lead of 17 points. An extremely reputable debut season and why I'm a Hamilton fan.

In 2008 and 2009 Alonso didn't have a competitive and neither did Lewis for most of 2009, nevertheless both drivers outperformed their machinery. The reason Alonso sticks out as better at the moment is that he's managing to beat Lewis in an inferior car this year, not on qualifying pace as he's in a slower car, but on overall racing skills.

I'm quite sure they are the best drivers of their time. Hamilton is probably a bit quicker in a single lap,but Alonso has a slightly better pace during a whole race and makes less mistakes. Besides, Alonso had to climb from the bottom up to the top the hard way. Driving for Minardi, later third driver of Renault until he was given the oportunity of driving a decent car. He only needed a couple of races to show he was something special. It's easier to arrive to F1 and get a McLaren straightaway.
Lewis Hamilton is a fantastic driver. I think he will be remembered as one of the greats. Fernando Alonso on the other hand deserves to be remembered as the best ever. He won the title in the 2nd fastest car on the grid in 2006. He doesn't need the fastest car. That's why Massa is being beaten by Alonso because Massa can get 100% out of a car while Alonso gets 120%. Hamilton has a similar ability, but it's still rugged. Some fine tuning and he will be scary!

Not quite, in the first half of 2006 Fisichella scored 37 points in comparison to Massa's 28 points. Massa is definately a better driver than Fisichella, so that proves Renault was easily better than Ferrari in the first half of 2006. Renault had an illegal mass damper, once that was removed Schumacher suddenly dominated Alonso, what does that tell you?
Also, Michelin were much better than Bridgestone in the rain, even though Schumacher outscored Alonso in both wet GP's.
@MultiBikram - Fisichella convincingly beat Massa two years prior at Sauber, so Massa wasn't easily a better driver, even if he had improved substantially by 2006. Massa was also still quite accident prone in 2006, something he couldn't really iron out until a year later.
Also, Alonso would've won both wet GPs if it wasn't for 1) Tyre rim failure in Hungary and 2) Stupid pit strategy in China, I trust you actually watched those races right?
2008 and 2009 seasons were very difficult for fernando because he had a bad car... when they have a similar car the result is 1-1. in my opinion alonso is a bit better than hamilton because he is more inteligent and complete but hamilton is more spectacular... ( sorry for my english)

Hamilton and Alonso often have equal performance cars, and their battles are good. But I just can't avoid the fact that, Hamilton overtakes Alonso far more than Alonso does to him. @mawzipanable Regarding Button, Hamilton is way faster than Button in any conditions but it´s well known that when it comes to choosing tyres in raining conditions, Button is the best! Australia and China 2010, Canada and Hungary this year. But that doesn´t mean he can´t overtake, he actually did it to pass Vettel and again when Hamilton had the wrong tyres on.

The red bull is only dominant in qualifying - Webber hasn't won a single grand prix this year and has only two 2nd places while Vettel has 7 wins! The rookie argument is also pretty weak, back in 2007, teams were registering record testing mileage prior to season starting, before milage was cut down in 2008. The result was that Hamilton had ~25 GP distances in testing alone BEFORE his debut, no wonder he's barely improved since he started...

@FormulaOneFan4Eva I completely agree. Alonso and Hamilton are both great drivers, but when we saw them in the same car they performed the same. In 2008 and 2009 Alonso didn't have a competitive and neither did Lewis for most of 2009, nevertheless both drivers outperformed their machinery. The reason Alonso sticks out as better at the moment is that he's managing to beat Lewis in an inferior car this year, not on qualifying pace as he's in a slower car, but on overall racing skills.

Hamilton's debut season was pretty amazing, but it's mostly due to the unparalleled preparation he had prior to his debut, and the fact that nothing went wrong for him until the final two races. He was even hoisted back onto the track in Germany when he spun off.
However, regardless of Hamilton's circumstances, he shouldn't be trailing Alonso in that dog of a Ferrari.

At the same time Hamilton has had some bad luck. There was no way of preventing Koboyashi's move at Spa or Massa's poor sportsmanship yesterday. I'm quite sure they are the best drivers of their time. Hamilton is probably a bit quicker in a single lap,but Alonso has a slightly better pace during a whole race and makes less mistakes. Besides, Alonso had to climb from the bottom up to the top the hard way. Driving for Minardi, later third driver of Renault until he was given the oportunity of driving a decent car. He only needed a couple of races to show he was something special. It's easier to arrive to F1 and get a McLaren straightaway.

Lewis Hamilton is a fantastic driver. I think he will be remembered as one of the greats. Fernando Alonso on the other hand deserves to be remembered as the best ever. He won the title in the 2nd fastest car on the grid in 2006. He doesn't need the fastest car. That's why Massa is being beaten by Alonso because Massa can get 100% out of a car while Alonso gets 120%. Hamilton has a similar ability, but it's still rugged. Some fine tuning and he will be scary!

Over the course of the season, the Ferrari was unquestionably the superior car. Schumacher was at least able to challenge Alonso for victories in the first half, whereas the Ferrari was practically unbeatable in the 2nd. Sincerely, Michael Schumacher fan.

Not quite, in the first half of 2006 Fisichella scored 37 points in comparison to Massa's 28 points. Massa is definately a better driver than Fisichella, so that proves Renault was easily better than Ferrari in the first half of 2006. Renault had an illegal mass damper, once that was removed Schumacher suddenly dominated Alonso, what does that tell you?
Also, Michelin were much better than Bridgestone in the rain, even though Schumacher outscored Alonso in both wet GP's.

@MultiBikram - Fisichella convincingly beat Massa two years prior at Sauber, so Massa wasn't easily a better driver, even if he had improved substantially by 2006. Massa was also still quite accident prone in 2006, something he couldn't really iron out until a year later.
Also, Alonso would've won both wet GPs if it wasn't for 1) Tyre rim failure in Hungary and 2) Stupid pit strategy in China, I trust you actually watched those races right?

Hamilton and Alonso often have equal performance cars, and their battles are good. But I just can't avoid the fact that, Hamilton overtakes Alonso far more than Alonso does to him. Alonso often gets ahead of Hamilton a lot, through strategy, Hamilton mistakes, and safety cars. Hamilton gets ahead of Alonso through pure determination and balls.

As for monaco every F1 fan regardless of the driver they support knows that Lewis was pissed of with his team for sending him to so late in Q3. The best rivalary in the sport. Vettel is good but F1 needs more Alonso vs Hamilton WDC battles. Its sad to see Vettel cruise to wins when two greater talents are battling for scraps.

Lewis and Fernando finished with same points in 2007,i think Lewis had more 2nd place finishes, finishing 2nd overall. Would like to see both in same team again,though unlikely.

Not a fan of either and both of their attitudes can get really annoying but it's undeniable that they're the top 2 drivers in f1 at the moment.

It´s always good to see battles between Hamilton-Vettel, or Vettel-Alonso but Hamilton vs Alonso is definitely something else!!! It´s a battle between two racers who can actually overtake unlike vettel. What a rivalry!!! I´d like to see these two racing in the same team again witch is unlikely to happen so at least please give them a car good enough to fight for the title! So we can see them racing again wheel to wheel!

jeez, the cars looked weird back in the 07/08 days. No wonder they had so much downforce and before 08, they even had electronic driver aids. Still, Hamilton is out-and-out the fastest driver on the grid at the moment and Mr. Alonso is a supreme being.

@Bdwag - I would love to see Ferrari and McLaren topple Red Bull so we can have Alonso and Hamilton fighting each other for the title again. Would be so much better than Vettel just trotting home to victory with a car so much better than anyone elses...
