He was simply demonstrating the downside to having a small engine with a massive turbo. Most modern engines already have a pretty topheavy torque curve, but in this case it's taken to quite an extreme. You absolutely have to rev this engine high to make it move. Some people don't mind that and that's fine, but it was a relevant thing to demonstrate.
Now if the 2 cars weren't cruising at similar revs then I'd say it was unfair.
The Evolution 8 to me is worse to me then the 7. I personally like only Evo 9 and 10, my dad owns a 2008 Lancer GTS and every single time i look at it from any angle I fall in love :)))

It's absolutely not about the TURBO LAG. That problem is just because the flywheel of the Mitsubishi is much much lighter than the Stilo's one. And when it's lighter you slowdown faster, it's just because the lightweight flywheel can't keep kinetic energy in it.
So, why does the Stilo has a heavy flywheel ?
It's just because, when you decelerate you decelerate SLOWER, than a car with a lightweight flywheel. Top Gear is great, but MOST of the time, their comments about technical stuff ARE WRONG!
The fiat did the right thing, changed gears at the right time. You just put it in 6th and waited for the speed to get high enough for the turbo to kick in.

My dad's van makes a mad jump if you floor it at 1000-1500rpms in 1st gear, but the pull comes on much smoother at 3rd gear :)

It's an UK model fq320 and ofc it will cost more than it should be. I bought my new evoX last year for $42500 and thats a cheap one for a 2009 model with premium package. I really want the fq400 but it will cost me twice than what i pay. But i believe that the newer models is built to be faster. Such as my 4b11t engine will be more versatile than the older 4g63t engine.

My dad's van makes a mad jump if you floor it at 1000-1500rpms in 1st gear, but the pull comes on much smoother at 3rd gear :)

@bob3006 turbo lag is not just about right gears, cars without twin scroll technology always have a huge lag, even after you shift down you need the turbos to pick up speed, or spool, in other words...
thats why in a typical rolling start drag race of an NA car against a turbo car, its pretty obvious to see spot the lag..the bigger the turbo the bigger the lag

It's an UK model fq320 and ofc it will cost more than it should be. I bought my new evoX last year for $42500 and thats a cheap one for a 2009 model with premium package. I really want the fq400 but it will cost me twice than what i pay. But i believe that the newer models is built to be faster. Such as my 4b11t engine will be more versatile than the older 4g63t engine.

@bill3rdshift Actually, it wouldn't. Clarkson himself did a 0-150mph pull in a Z06 on that runway, all in fifth. Granted, it is a six-speed, but 30 is a lot faster to start at than 0.

i had a mitsubishi colt gti 96, at 35, 40 kph on fifth gear it just rises speed a lot faster than this evo.

@CRXPhil the only explaination i can think of for a professional racer doing a timed lap and dropping of the boost for that amount of time is intentional sabotage. they clearly recieve backhanders from these other car makers and couldnt let the evo top the chart.

People, when he does the race with the evo's turbo lag, He's showing that the turbo will kick in at higher rpm, ( about 8000 rpm) and that it's not meant for lower rpm.

the redline for this car is 7500 to 8000, that means you would NEVER use the turbo...it comes in at probably about 4500 - 5000 rpm.
He is just being picky about it and looking for things to complain about, its not even a problem you just have to make a better gear choice.

any idiot knows that turbo lag is present in any car going 30 mph in 6th gear...really?! you think a twin-turbo veyron in sixth gear would just shoot past that fiat?! it might catch it, but i highly doubt turbo lag even in a 1100hp car weighing over two tons would help it much in 6th gear over a mile and a half...

@speedcrazy94 veyron has four turbos not twin, you said any car with turbo lag is present at 30mph in 6th gear? ever heard of an NA engine? NA engine has NO lag, even it is in the 8th gear acceleration is immediate even if its slow...plus, you still need the turbo to spool, its not all about right gears...turbos that are too big spoils the crispness of the acceleration, Normally good driver's cars are ones without turbos...
every car has flaws, evo is great bang for buck..
