I agree with John, It's not technology itself that makes a good animated movie, it's what you DO with the technology that makes it work. Are you listening DreamWorks?
Never has a movie been liked soley because of it's technology... Until Avatar. An unoriginal plot with amazing graphics. Thank god for The Hurt Locker. And pixar...
John, you basically said everything I've been saying to people who thinks that 3-D is the best thing on Earth. I'm glad that a 3-D man like you really appreciates classic animation. People wanna be entertained by films just like what you said, and 2-D can definitely do that just like or even better than 3-D. Now I don't hate computer- animation because I LOVE it, but in my opinion 2-D is better. LONG LIVE CLASSIC ANIMATION.
Lots of filmmakers have become so enamored with the special effects they can do that they cobble together a story or throw in an unnecessary character just to show off the technology. These movies make money because of whoever's behind it (and those filmmakers DID make good movies twenty years ago), so the films with rubbish stories continue to get made.
Now that I've made a short story long: bravo Pixar, for caring more about the stories they tell than the tools they use to tell them!
As a hand-drawn animator myself, it makes my soul leap a little bit every time something new comes out. There is something passionate and beautiful in the detail of hand-drawn animation that you just don't get with computer animation, at least not in the same way.
I couldn't agree more with what John is saying. The unfortunate thing about Disney's features in the 90's is that a lot of them DID become "so-so films" and they had the wrong idea when they thought it was because of how they were animated. Let's hope that "The Princess and the Frog" fixes this lousy misconception.
While 3D is good, hand-drawn in a way is more accessible.
As a kid, it's so cool to realize, you can draw something...and make it move! I had breakfast with some people, and the little girl who was with them seemed bored. I did 2-3 images of a fish swishing it's tail, and her eyes lit up. It's the simplest kind of magic you can do.
My Dad did that once when he brought home these little mini notepads, and he drew a little stick figure doing a cartwheel.
excellent. Very well put. Great to see these videos being shared too. Its inspiring and very helpful to someone following the same path, and having some of the greatest storytellers doing it.
for those people who think that hand drawn and 2d animation is poor, just look at anything by ghibli. i mean princess mononoke can easily beat in both style an story,so many Hollywood 3d children's films.
I totally agree with John. Even though I LOVE the 3-D Animation medium (All thanks to Pixar!), Hand-Drawn will always have a place in my heart. It's so disappointing when people use technology as an excuse to not use a different medium. Who said it had to be made with the newest latest technology around? I donno about anyone else, I'm just looking for a well told story (on the appropriate medium of course.) ;)
One thing that I should say about this argument (and I agree with it) is that people want the 'silver bullet'; the one quick fix (for example, 2D to CGI) when the real problem is needs to be addressed (sometimes, bad storytelling or bad animation) this problem takes a lot of convincing to a lot of parties, and then fixing it.
This example (the silver bullet) is also can go really into any area in our life because of this 'I want it now' attitude.
beautifully said. I miss hand drawn. You guys are the only ones who make 3 dimensional look good, and others know that and still went from hand drawn, which they were perfectly good at and tried to copy. Ahhh the thinking process of a studio...still amazes.
its ironic since he his one of the contributing factors for the death of hand drawn animation

It's a good thing that we're returning to hand-drawn animation. It'll attract more audiences that the Pixar films.
