While stationed in southern California in the late '70s, K F I boomed in late at night, and Big Ron was an absolute blast of energy to listen to. Charlie Fox had previously been in the 6 - 10 PM if I vaguely recall. The whole station was a complete joy to listen to at any time of the day with all the personality.
What a huge shock one night having moved back to the Midwest after leaving the service to discover Big Ron O'Brien on SIXTY SIX... W Nnnnnnn B C New York.
Great days. Gotta admit I was more of a Big Ron fan at KFI in the 70s. 1980s were a little more daring days in radio, when jocks/producers werent as corporately pansy and pushed the envelope a little more without being so cookie cutter. Funny to hear songs from like 6 different genres in one 10 min span. Now that stuff would be targeted for separate stations/markets, and would never intersect. Probably why ppl from that era had a more complete taste in pop music. Miss u Ron. Damn those cigs. :(
Wow! I remember when Big Ron was giving away Prince tickets. One time, he was looking for caller 20, and I was caller 19. He was so nice to me. I was 9 and thrilled that I had even gotten to speak with "the guy on the radio"; the tickets became an afterthought.
Excellent Video from the best in the business. KIIS FM did not start simulcasting or shadow casting (when they used a separate staff of Announcers) until Jan 1985.
However the call letters were changed back in November 1984 to KIIS AM, so this is a common mistake.
KIIS (102.7 FM) begin simulating with KPRZ (1150AM) in late November 1984 returning to their original AM calls of KIIS-AM) through the eighties. Rick Dess (6-10 AM) and Big Ron (2-6 PM) both drive time jocks were simulated. Other times: 10 AM 2 PM, 6 10 PM, 10 2 AM, and 2 6 AM shifts were split between the FM (102.7) and AM (1150) although playing the same songs and jingles..
Flashback to 102.7 KIIS FM today, in 2024 and see how funny the hip hop generation sounds! Actually no, flash back to 2004-2008. Right now we're in another transition since the hip hop phase is currently coming to a close. This transition we're in now is leading to the sound that will be dominating in 2024, on whatever technology we are using for music at that time. Will rapping on everything still be as popular then? Not sure, but I bet pop will still be around, and dance will be back in the US
The principles of good broadcast never change. Anyone who says this type of jock work is "out of date" is mistaken, even if all 5 major owners refuse to do it.
Did you notice he was smoking a cig during his show? That seems extremely foreign today doesn't it. Especially if you are a non-smoker. But I guess smoking was allowed everywhere in the 80's
THE RADIO GOD of ALL Radio Gods doing what he loved to do best. God bless Big Ron at that great radio station in the sky! Ron, you will always be my #1 jock of all time! You are MY IDOL. You are sorely missed... jb
Yeah Ron was super cool to work with, very easy going!
For me it was extra special, because when I met him he had been an idol of mine for years. I grew up in a suburb of Chicago and would listen to him on WCFL. I went to High School in Utah and would listen to him doing nights at 64 KFI.
So when I finally met him it was like I had known him for years.
Whats the last song played in the video, just after the weather?
