  • This was a HUGE upset. Clarke was a lock for the gold, and only a handful of others were thought to have much chance at silver and bronze. Mills was only ranked eighth in the world, and his best time was nearly a minute slower than Clarke's. Nobody thought this would happen except for Mills. Many Americans had their hopes on Lingren.

    Mills' prep was obviously superb, but every world class athlete plans how they will win the big race. Mills actually did it - the upset of the century in track.

  • This was no upset. Mills had prepared--especially mentally--for four years to win the 1964 Tokyo 10,000 meters. Any athlete, any individual would benefit from reading how he prepared!

    The last 200 meters makes me cry, even knowing how it will end! "Look at Mills! Look at Mills!" echoes and re-echoes in all of our minds! What a race! What a triumph, over adversity, others, and self!

  • Very nice story in this week's Sports Illustrated about Billy Mills, who grew up an orphan on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. I get goosebumps when this announcer yells, "LOOK AT MILLS, LOOK AT MILLS ! ! !".
