Chalk -- Study #1

I like the imagery, camera handling, song, etc. It's a little dark but it worked in some parts. Keep doing studies like this. :)

The smoking seemed gratuitous unless the viewer is meant to understand something by it. Taken out of context as a study makes that hard to do and probably hard to convey if there was a point for it. This was only a minute long video and that seemed to be a big part (5 shots of smoking), whether or not it was meant to be important.

I liked this. The camera movement mimiced the swirl in the chalk. The smoking worked, because smoking works. The intellect with a pipe, the fat cat with a cigar, the villian with a cigarette held like a dart are either classic archtypes or trite card board cut outs. The contempative person in a swirl of smoke works in your film because it fits the overall theme of the movie. Otherwise, it would be an amateur image. I am crediting it to a deft touch, but becareful of using smoking. as an image.

I did intend the smoking to fit with the chalk movements and the fluid (and smoky) movements of the camera and the idea of the movie. But I indeed don't intend to overuse smoking as a symbol.

It's a song called Roger and Jessica by an old student of my dad's. He was doing his final project on Gravity's Rainbow as a CD.

Another thing that works for me (since you're asking) is when you add continuous pictures as if the character were moving. (?) I don't really know how to explain that better :D I hope you get what I mean.

Do you mean the match cuts? Like where two similar forms transition into each other. Or like at :23 when the motion continues into the character in the next shot?

Wow. I am impressed. I like the way you moved the camera. It was kind of like I was seeing it through eyes instead of a camera, if that makes sense. I have to disagree with everyone else I like the smoking. It gives a certain feel to the picture as does Eva's demeanor. I also thought the transitions were very smooth. Keep up the good work sir.

First of all, guess what, I love the song so.... screw you for being right again.

Anyway, you know I like it. In fact, I think it's one of your best things so far. Even though there's not story or anything, there's a lot of emotion in it. And it's just really well put together.... it reminds me of Michel Gondry or something. I'm also a fan of revealing things as they go, so not showing the whole picture till the end is a nice tough.

I like that you weren't afraid to put a cigarette in the video. I know it's bad, and people will complain about it, but it adds so much to the video... the music works so well, the camera angles are legit, and I can't wait to see more!

I really enjoyed the fact that we were kinda traveling with the chalk the whole way, getting smaller and smaller, not knowing what design our chalky selves were drawing, and then finally running out only to discover that we are a part of smothing great--Peace.

Well done, guys, For me, the best part of this was the cuts. Used dissolves in the right spot and a cut to at the right spot. Also, natural light worked for me. I don't know, something about Fall light.

The camera shake was intentional but it was meant to come off as more of a smooth shakiness than a jerky one. I think youtube quality screws it up a little.
